The Great Grex Auction, for real this time! Mark Unseen   May 7 23:47 UTC 2003

The Great Grex auction didn't quite get off th ground last fall, but this
spring it is a definite go. Here's how it works:

- Grexers donate items or services to the auction.
- Other Grexers bid on them.
- The winning bidders pay Grex for the items they bought.

That's it! Very simple, and a very good way to support Grex, and also
maybe get something you need. (And/or get rid of something you don't
need.)

Here are the donations we have so far:

scott: A small item made of chainmail (to be specified soon).
aruba: 10 handmade envelopes, made from paper of the winner's choosing,
          and one plexiglass envelope template.
remmers: A live home ragtime piano concert, from a semifinalist in this
year's Old Time Piano Playing Contest in Peoria, Illinois.
danr: One apple pie.
janc: A board game called Bismark.
valerie: 2 cobalt blue "Galactically Boring" Grex mugs, with slogan in
          white figlet font.
keesan: Any number of hours of Jim's talents at fixing things.
jh: A Rastafari T-Shirt.
mary: Two dozen oatmeal cherry cookies, topped with a poem written
for the winning bidder by remmers.
volvo: A 12" x 12" stained glass window, in the favorite colors of the
winning bidder. Retail value is approximately $100.
bhelliom: A cross-stitch of a Samuri (6 months work!)
bhelliom: A huge collection of Star Trek technical manuals (more details
          later).

As you can see, lots of different kinds of things make good donations to
the auction. Some good categories to think about are:

- Old books
- Old CDs
- Old games
- Baked goods
- Things you bought by mistake, and never got around to returning
- Things people gave you that you don't want (we won't tell!)
- Crafty things you know how to do

And lots of other things I haven't mentioned. Use your imagination.

Minimum bid for all items is $5, unless the donor specifies a higher bid.
(Which is to say, the minimum bid can be as high as you like, but it can't
be under $5. Small items can be combined into bundles so that they're
worth at least $5.) If you can think of something you'd like to donate,
enter it here or send mail to auction@cyberspace.org.

Don't forget that Grex is a 501(c)3 organization, so all donations to it
are tax-deductible.

The auction will open to the public at midnight on Wednesday, May 14th.
20 responses total.

It is not 'any number of hours of Jim's time for $5 minimum'. You have to
bid for at least one hour to start, for $5, and each successive bid has to
be for at least one more hour or more per hour and he normally gets at least
$20/hour for home repairs. He also fixes stereo equipment and computers (old
computers). Maximum five hours, but you can still bid more per hour if it
reaches five hours. For instance first bid $6 an hour for two hours, second
bid $7/hour for two hours, third bid $7/hour for three hours. Travel time
will count as part of the hours (by bike). If you feed him (vegan) he may
work a bit longer in exchange.

Jim fixes and tunes bicycles. Plumbing, wiring, furnaces, various mechanical
parts of houses, appliances, structural. He is building me a house right now.
Has worked at maintainance and as an electrician. Will fix toasters, hair
driers, fans. You can deliver them or he can go to them. Ask first whether
he can do what you want before bidding. He is good at diagnosing and giving
advice (consulting). If the fix does not work, no charge for time. Willing
to dig your garden (don't ask him to weed it, you'll be sorry). Tree trimming
(minor). Gutter cleaning if you have the ladder.

Lives in west central Ann Arbor (near Zion Lutheran Church) and bikes at least
10 miles/hour around town.

Get an electrician. Amateur-installed exhaust fans can start fires inside
your walls.

I'm not the donor for the Bismarck game. Someone donated it and a bunch of
other Avalon Hill games to Grex once. All the others went away, but this one
didn't. I don't remember who the donor is, but it isn't me.

Minor correction, due to the passage of time: I was a semifinalist
in *last* year's contest, not this year's.

(Hm, this year's contest is coming up in a couple of weeks. I better
do some practicing...)

Re #4: I think Bret Weintraub (formerly zook) was the donor of the Bismarck
game.

Re #5: I'll correct that before the conference opens.

Of course, grexbat is also up for auction again. But please bid
properly for such a beautiful (and useful!) item. Don't make me buy it
again!

concerning the stained glass window, I am officially taking the position that
the winning bidder may request a color of choice which will be mixed with
pieces of clear glass, *or* winner may request "Artists choice" which will
result in lot's of colors.

polytarp - bidding will commence when the auction conference opens Wednesday
night. Here is the description of Scott's donation, BTW:

A 16-20" (buyer's preference) "birdcage" weave necklace, made of heavy
stainless steel wire rings. This is a fairly "chunky" or heavy necklace,
would be good for men as well as women. A short section, with a US quarter
for size reference, can be seen at:
http://www.scotthelmke.com/birdcage16ga.jpg

Minimum bid is $30.

I'm bidding now, thanks.
Except I retract my bid because it's not high enough + I don't want such a
crappy product, thanks.

I could donate some illustre 'Instant Paradise' and 'Black Water Fever'
cd's. Live garage rock/punk rock music performed by yours truly in a
gray past. These cd's are not for sale, and only three or four other
people in the US own copies.
I'll burn them and send them by snail mail. (Iw ill take care of the
cost) The money has to go to Grex.
Curious? Ask bhelliom, mooncat or scott about if it's any worth.
