Well, we currently have $1768 in the new computer fund. Another $118 has
been pledged but not yet received. We expect the machine to cost between
$2000 and $2500.

I thought the idea was to buy the machine now, and make up the difference
between what's been pledged and what it costs at some point in the future?

You've got the idea right. Hardware is being purchased now.
