I have a vague note about phones and centrex needing
a slot on the agenda. Does anyone else remember what
that's about?

Fewer lines, no centrex, and the savings would pay for the cancellation
penalty in a couple of months.

Right, the question is whether we want to break our Centrex contract and
drop another line or two. We need some information from Jan about our
current phone utilization, and I need to call Ameritech and try to get a
quote from them on what we would be paying if had fewer lines and weren't on
Centrex.

I'm curious. Does it bug Zingerman's that a lot of people don't buy stuff
at these meetings, or do they see it as a public service thing and not care?

response 5 of 24: Mark Unseen   Feb 19 18:50 UTC 2003

The ones I've been to, most folks bought something. I think I was the
sole exception at the most recent meeting. But they've never hassled
me other times I've been there without buying. (Except to ply me with
samples, that is. ;)

No Zingerman's employee has ever said anything at all one way or the other,
as far as I know. (When I was there, I mean.) My guess is that they feel
that if they allow us to reserve the room, then some people will buy stuff
every month (and build some loyalty to them), and it will benefit them in
the end.

I think they are just trying to be nice. They have the space, Wed nights are
not crowded there.

Re #5: Right. I've been to a lot of meetings at Zing's, and normally
almost everybody buys something.

response 9 of 24: Mark Unseen   Feb 20 10:40 UTC 2003

it's only common politeness to buy something. I think I was too rushed
for the last board meeting (I had another meeting I also wanted to get
to), but I normally at least try to buy tea and some sort of snack.

We buy bread ends - 6 for 50 cents. Sourdough rye.

Zingerman's is mildly expensive, but since they donate this service to
Grex, I try to be a bit less cheap than I might otherwise be when eating
there. I always buy food when I attend a board meeting. I don't think
people should feel obligated to do so though.

As evidence that Zingerman's is trying to do a community service rather than
letting grex use the place in hopes of a monetary return:

They are heavily involved in Food Gatherers. I think they host the annual
fundraising event.

They hire as bus-people those who would have trouble finding work elsewhere.

They let a group we belonged to use their space free for a year (once a month)
to host lectures on food, and also once or twice a year gave this group a free
lecture on things like olive oil, cheese, or chocolate, with free samples.
The lectures are normally $10 or $15 per person.

Zingerman's is great!

hey, maybe Zingerman's can be convinced to design a new sandwich for the menu
and name it after Grex. The Grex Sandwich! And in exchange for use of the
Grex name, Grex gets publicity and agrees to pay something for the room it
now rents for free. The Grexwich?

I would consider that a very unlikely arrangement.

response 15 of 24: Mark Unseen   Feb 26 04:54 UTC 2003

It's a neat idea though. But I don't think we rate a sandwich. :)

response 16 of 24: Mark Unseen   Feb 26 14:03 UTC 2003

We'd just get into a massive debate about what should go on the
sandwich. Russ would want to exclude all imported ingrediants, lk would
accuse us of neglecting Israeli cuisine, rcurl would say we were being
illogical about the whole thing due to our beliefs about what a sandwich
should be, etc. ;)

response 17 of 24: Mark Unseen   Feb 26 14:27 UTC 2003

Make sure not to use refined flour in the bread.

response 18 of 24: Mark Unseen   Feb 26 15:27 UTC 2003

Russ would want nothing that even hints at "Indian" on the sandwich.

Get real, Sapna. If I can't getta dosa hot sauce on my food, it
means that the restaurant just isn't trying to curry my favor.

response 21 of 24: Mark Unseen   Mar 17 10:27 UTC 2003

condiments are options, to each her own. a grexwich is an amazing
fund raising possiblilty. remember, condiments are optional, what
are the ingredients?
tsty
response 22 of 24: Mark Unseen   Mar 21 09:36 UTC 2003

actually, there ought to be two ... grexwich-V and grexwich-M .....

now ... what are the ingredients?
tsty
response 23 of 24: Mark Unseen   Mar 26 13:37 UTC 2003

.... this concept could get interesting ... board-approved food and
some dough for dough for grex.

ingredients?
