Party Bots Mark Unseen   Feb 3 06:36 UTC 2003

Lately a few users have been running "party bots" in 'party'. These
bots are very uneducated, and are very annoying. These bots also tie
up a tty port that could be used by someone else. I think there should
be some way to stop bots, other than :ignore srihai.

(yeah, that krj bot is a real bore too. we should ban bots so we can
have more ttys for good users like mnb, ghj, ttt, jackv20, jl, germ06,
genocide and senna.)

I've long suggested blocking the IP addresses of (ab)users who run 'bots
or otherwise harass others. It's not like we don't know who they are.

Grex is a medium for communication between people. 'Bots don't belong.
If someone wants to run a 'bot, let them run party on their own system
and allow people to telnet in to talk to it.

It's a nice idea, but difficult to implement.

We already have the problem blocking persistent vandals coming in from
different IP addresses because of the random nature of ISP assignment of IP
addresses.

The people running bots are currently
"srihai" ran by Ryan Antkowiak (ryan) coming from 141.219.83.248
"pu" ran by Ernie Allen Hershey (caspre) coming from 209.196.48.203
There was also "corky" ran by Anthony Schneider (styles) which was
coming from 64.81.195.185, but is now gone!

The bots are idiotic. But as long as we're not falling short of tty's for
regular reasons (are we?) I don't see a reason to ban them. There's always
":ignore". And besides, its entertaining to see people try to engage srihai
in conversation. And isn't that what party is all about "entertainment". Its
not like the system is being vandalised.

I think if people want to run bots, run them in different channels, if
people want to play with them, they will goto that channel, as they did
with corky!

response 13 of 36: Mark Unseen   Feb 3 23:26 UTC 2003

We're not running short of ptys. As for the bots, unless they get truly
annoying I figure they're just an art project of sorts. I've done some rather
annoying things here on occasion too, playing with the technology of text
discussions.

I think that if you wish to run a bot on grex, run it in a different
channel, other than the "party" channel!

ATI's

to-value
sector. While details are slim, the 4800 is actually just an
AGP
8X-enabled 4400 with nView support, so it won't outperform
the 4600
          despite it's higher number.

response 22 of 36: Mark Unseen   Feb 4 23:56 UTC 2003

Now there is a bot on grex party, that links m-net and grex party
together. Don't we want to keep the two seperate?

That's a clever idea. I'm not saying it should be done, but it's clever.

response 24 of 36: Mark Unseen   Feb 5 00:00 UTC 2003

I would not object to any bots what so ever, if they were not in the
main 'party' channel. If bots are in the main party channel, they
should be "splatted"!
