The Great Grex Auction!!! Mark Unseen   Dec 3 22:19 UTC 2002

The Grex Auction will be opening soon! We're accepting donations for
the seventh (I think) Great Grex Auction. The auction is to raise
money for Grex, so your donations go to a good cause.

Some of the things donated previously include: a homemade scarf/hat,
baby papyrus plants, pans of fudge, board games, a dream catcher, bath
salts, and various and sundry machines.

Do you have any interesting items lying around your house? Anything
neat you know how to make? Any skill you'd be willing to share with
other Grexers during a few hours of donated time?

You can enter your donations here or mail auction@cyberspace.org. Our
operators are standing by!

I assume that there will be an auction conference again, to keep the
donations and bidding orderly.

I need a little feedback on what to donate: I can do a women's bracelet like
last time, a men's bracelet, and or a slightly more fancy version of other's
coin purse (all chainmail stuff).

hey maybe whoever has the grexbat now ought to re-auction it. Surely it will
bring a better price now than ever before. Because of course the grex bat
is like fine wine, it gets better with age!

I'll donate 10 handmade envelopes and one envelope template, so that you
can make your own, with instructions. You choose the sizes of the
envelopes and the paper. Minimum bid: $10.

Re #1: There will indeed be an auction conference. But go ahead and declare
donations here, so that when the conference starts, we'll have a bunch of
items to front-load it with.

Minimum bid on all auction items is $5, unless the donor declares a higher
amount.

As in the past, I'll donate a live home ragtime piano concert, with
myself as the performer. Minimum bid: $20.

(When the auction conference starts up, you can use the same wording
as last time around -- item #51 in the old auction cf -- and add that
I was a semifinalist in this year's Old Time Piano Playing Contest
in Peoria Illinois.)

There's a board game called "Bismark" in our garage. This was donated by
someone to a previous Grex auction, and deposited at our house with a bunch
of other games. All the rest went away, but this one didn't. I find it hard
to believe that it feel through the cracks of Mark's elaborate auction
accounting, but if it isn't supposed to go to anyone, maybe putting it up
again would be good. At least it would be out of our garage. We also have
two classic "Galactically Boring - Grex" mugs (dark blue with the slogan in
white figlet font). This is unsold Grex store inventory from years ago. Might
be good to auction off.

Have to look around to see if we have anything to actually donate.

Would there be any interest in Jim donating his time to tune up or repair
bicycles?

Re #7 Will you travel anywhere?

I imagine he would - at the donor's expense.

response 14 of 23: Mark Unseen   Dec 5 01:28 UTC 2002

Given enough time Jim could probably bike out to central Illinois, but I think
the auction of his time had better be just for Ann Arbor (or within 10 miles,
anyway). He can also attempt to repair various appliances but no guarantees,
you just rent him by the hour.

I'd bid on Jim's services, so yes, please.

response 16 of 23: Mark Unseen   Dec 5 15:33 UTC 2002

Okay, consider Jim to have offered his services with a minimum bid of
$10/hour, and you can bid for one or more hours and he is available for up
to 5 hours and usually charges at least $20/hour. He can split his time up
between two or more people if they provide lunch to compensate for
transportation time (vegan but cookies are allowed too). He does not like
to work on cars but will attempt (no guarantees) to fix anything electrical
and/or mechanical including stoves, clogged refrigerators, dehumidifiers with
stuck fans (he has a parts collection), furnaces, water heaters (can replace
valves), thermostats, Christmas tree lights, phones and phone lines - best
to ask first before bidding if you want him for something specific. Also tape
decks and turntables but not usually receivers or CD players or VCRs (they
tend to need expensive parts). He can also assemble kids' Christmas presents.

I think Sindi has just offered to rent out her Swiss Army Jim!

Sindi, you didn't mention computers. Also, you didn't mention that he
has an extraordinary amount of patience.

I don't keep much stuff around that I don't want, so don't have
anything to donate this year. However, I do enthusiastically bid on
things sometimes.

response 19 of 23: Mark Unseen   Dec 6 03:32 UTC 2002

That is correct.

I can't promise I'll be able to part with grexbat --- the power is just too
addictive --- but I don't see how I'd be able to stop this tradition.

We'd best keep an eye on this. Next thing you know, Mickey's gonna wind up
using the grexbat to turn himself invisible one time too many, and defunct
grex accounts on black steeds are gonna start following him around.
