Cyberspace Communications finances for October 2002
|
Nov 1 14:32 UTC 2002 |
Here is the treasurer's report on Cyberspace Communications, Inc. finances
through October 31st, 2002.
Beginning Balance $5,093.51
Credits $462.00 Member contributions
$4.57 Interest on our savings account
$25.00 Commissions from sales via CafePress
$2.17 Miscellaneous donations
$5.00 Repayment of bounced check fee
------------
$498.74
Debits $76.58 Pumpkin Rent for November
$45.97 Electricity for October
$175.94 Phone Bill
$135.00 DSL October 15 through November 15
$4.44 Paypal fees (income = $122.17)
$12.00 Check that bounced last month
$5.00 Fee for bounced check
$2.09 Error in cost of backup tapes
------------
$457.02
Ending Balance $5,135.23
Our current balance breaks down as follows:
$3,898.24 General Fund
$152.99 Silly Hat Fund
$60.00 Spare Parts Fund
$1,024.00 Infrastructure Fund
The money is distributed like this:
$794.50 Checking account
$4,340.73 Savings account earning approximately 1.30% interest annually
We had one new member in October (dvm). We are currently at 80 members,
76 of whom are paid through at least November 15th. (The others expired
recently and are in a grace period.)
Notes:
- Grex is in the black this month!
- One of the checks I deposited at the end of last month bounced. The
person who wrote the check graciously replaced it with a money order, and
included an extra $5 to pay the fee our bank charges when a check bounces.
- I made an error on the cost of the backup tapes last month. I think the
salesman must have told me one number over the phone, but charged us a
slightly different one. It's not worth fighting over, but the actual
amount we paid was $110.73 rather than $108.64, thus I included an extra
$2.09 in this month's debits.
- The board directed me to stop reporting the Grex store totals every
month, seeing as how the Grex store has basically been replaced by the
CafePress store. Suggestions for what to do with the (small) remaining
inventory are welcome.
Thanks to everyone who contributed in October:
bruin, devnull, dvm, eskarina, gull, mnac, robh, steve, witling, and two
people who asked to remain anonymous.
Thanks everyone!
If you or your institution would like to become a member of Grex, it only
costs $6/month or $60/year. Send money to:
Cyberspace Communications
P. O. Box 4432
Ann Arbor, MI 48106-4432
If you pay by cash or money order, please include a photocopy of some form of
ID. I can't add you to the rolls without ID. (If you pay with a personal
check that has your name pre-printed on it, we consider that a good enough
ID.) Type !support or see http://www.cyberspace.org/member.html for more
info.

Can you offer anyone who pays for a full year of membership a discount on the
remaining items in the grex store (sell them the items at cost)? Or even run
this on a lottery system - every time you get 10 people paying, pick a number
out of the hat and give one a t-shirt or mug?

The board authorized Sylvia (bhelliom) to do whatever she
thought appropriate to dispense with what stock remains
in the Grex store. I'd contact her if you wanted any of
it or had an idea of how to, er, get rid of it.

I like Sindi's suggestions on #1.
Re #2: Yes, if you pay via Paypal, you need to send a copy of some form of
ID. Some ways to do that are:
1) Photocopy it and send the copy to:
Cyberspace Communications
P.O. Box 4432
Ann Arbor, MI 48106-4432
2) Fax it to 734-930-6564, or
3) Scan it in and email it to me at mconger@umich.edu. (Don't worry if you
get a bounce message from Grex; I'll still get it at the other account.)

I noticed that our "Certificate of Assumed Name" (a form which we file in
Lansing that allows us to use the name "Grex" in transactions) was due to
expire at the end of the year, but I haven't received a renewal form. So I
called the State, and it turns out they still have my old address as the
address of record, so they've been sending things there. Arrgh! I *know*
I told them both our new registered address (my house) and our mailing
address (the P.O. box) back in January of 2001, the last time I realized
they were sending things to the wrong place. (See oldcoop item 230.)
So the upshot is that Cyberspace Comms is delinquent in filing its
Corporation Info Update forms, again. They'll send them to us, and we'll
owe a penalty on the 2001 form (and possibly on the 2002 one as well, I'm
not sure.) Last time the regular fee was $10 and the penalty was $5, so
expect to see an extra $25-$30 on the December treasurer's report.
I apologize, I should have noticed that we hadn't sent in that form
recently. But I was *sure* I had fixed the address problem.

At work, i keep a calandar/to-do list of all required interactions with
government (when to order form X, when to expect to get form X, when to
make sure form X is filed by, when to check that form X was received and
processed on time). We've caught a fair number of government screw-ups
(that would come back at us) this way.

I got the forms from Lansing today, so I'll send them in tomorrow, and we'll
be back in good standing.

I sent the forms off to Lansing, along with an extra letter requesting
that they change our addresses in their records. I called to ask if we
owe any penalties, and according to a woman named Sharon we don't. So the
cost was $30 ($10 for each year's corp info update and $10 for renewing
our assumed name).

($10 for the 2001 form, $10 for the 2002 form, $10 for the renewal...
looks OK to me, but I'm a math minor and accustomed to making wrong
answers look right.) ;)

Carson has interpreted correctly. Perhaps Jamie was doing addition in some
characteristic other than 0.

It's $10 for each of the corp. info. update forms (2001 and 2002), and $10
for the renewal of assumed name, which is good for 5 years.
