New conference proposal Mark Unseen   Oct 22 15:13 UTC 2002

I would like to propose a new conference of which I would like to be
fair-witness.

I've looked through the conferences listed, and have found no conference that
discusses the world at large. I've noticed a lot of new users popping in
lately, and quite a few of them are non-American. We've got a few from Europe,
a handful of Chinese, of course the whole host of Indians, and the occasional
user from Indonesia. Seeing how international the user base is, it would be
nice to have a conference devoted to the rest of the world. Though I would
like to see this remain mainly unpolitical, i guess the occasional political
item wouldn't hurt.

And I also think that it would be educational (hopefully) for the rest of the
AMerican user base, or at least a little fun.

Discuss.

I think I know why you're chuckling :)

Ok, I'll say it. I have a similar cf on mnet. But mnet being what it is, its
not shaped out the way I've planned. I'm sure the international flavor on grex
would be very different, for various reasons, a) seeing that there are a lot
more interenational users on grex than there are on mnet, and b) grexers tend
to take their discussions a little more seriously.

I believe this would be a wonderful platform to learn about other cultures
around the world

international, world, any other suggestions?

"world" appears to be an alias for "politics". I couldn't

        "join international"

This might be relevant:

} Item 40: Welcome to NewsLine96!!
} Entered by The Dharma Bum (kerouac) on Mon, Apr 22, 1996 (23:15):
}
} Welcome to NewsLine96!! This is the conference where we discuss
} issues and current events. The biggest war we fight these days is the one
} against ignorance and apathy. It is hoped that this conference will
} be used to encourage and foster discussion and debate on the changing
} nature of our times.
}
} This conference supercedes the World conf, which used to cover world
} affairs and the Politics conf, which was designed to discuss issues
} relevant to campaign '96. Hopefully this is the best of both worlds. A
} place for open and frank discussion on anything relevant.
}
} So keep reading your newspapers, keep watching or listening to the news
} and if you have something to say or a spleen to vent, you can come here.
} This is a place where we encourage speaking out!

Item 1 of the "politics" conference indicates that it was merged with the
former "world" conference. The last response of that item then refers to
Item 40, quoted above, for the 'new introduction'.

You may want to browse that conference, to see if it meets your desire.

Damn, I'm being really testy today. Sorry for jumping at you, Joe.

I was thiking of "international" with "intl" as the alias, to make it easier.

Its amazing how parallel grex and mnet are. The same thing happened there with
the politics cf merging with the world cf.

The point i'm making is I want a cf that discusses diferent cultures,
different countries, but not their politics or current events per se. We can
learn a lot about other countries, and in a small way, I'm hoping it will keep
our international users more interested in grex.

I foresee keesan being an active participant in discussing the minutiae
of eastern European language and culture.

Cool. Not much overlap with the current 'world' conference, and the overlap
with the 'language' conference should be well come.

with the expanding awareness of the american population to 'elsewehre' this
.cf could generate some hellacious (sp?) debate.

counteracts doldrums, too.

I like the word "Hellacious" :)

I was fw of the politics conf, SRW as fw of the world conf, and we merged
those confs some time back. But the combined conf is a current events conf,
not a conf (such as the one being proposed) dealing with issues surrounding
those who live and work in international locales

Right. I'm pretty excited about this, because the way I see it, we're getting
a lot of foreign users into agora, and i think it would make them feel a
little more welcome in the system if it was more apparent that there were
other foreigners here. And though agora is a great platform, to the casual
observer it does come out to be an "AA" cf.

considering your years spent abroad. Hope to see you there as a regular :)

Have there been any other decisions made regarding the conference?
mynxcat
response 22 of 34: Mark Unseen   Oct 31 20:25 UTC 2002

I'm waiting for the 2 week period after proposal to be up, then I'll send
email to cfadmin and get it started. I haven't decided on whether I want a
co-fw or not. Maybe I'll give it a few weeks before I take on a co-fw
remmers
response 23 of 34: Mark Unseen   Nov 1 10:31 UTC 2002

There's no "official" discussion period length for conference
proposals. Past practice has been about a week. So you could
start bugging cfadm now if you want to.
mynxcat
response 24 of 34: Mark Unseen   Nov 1 15:15 UTC 2002

I thought it was 2 weeks? Actually, I have tonnes going on right now. I times
the proposal so the 2 weeks would end just about when most of the stuff
happeniing in my life would end. So if its ok with everyone, I'd like to wait
another week before this cf is made.
