New idea about bots /please read/
|
May 10 20:14 UTC 1999 |
Dear sysop,
I've read what you wrote about IRCbots
and I can only agree you. Running 25k
processes at a time would bring down a
system to its knees.
But I have another idea. I haven't yet
tried it, but it can be possible. You
only have to install ONE customized bot
that connects to ONE irc server (I mean
server, not channel), and deals with
all of the required bots. Most bots do
only respond the 'PING?', and I think
that's enough for nearly everyone. It
would run much faster - well, at least
at an acceptable speed ;). Although it
would still require a good bandwidth,
that would be 50-60 times less than
installing a bot for everyone.
Thanx for reading this.

Interesting idea. It would certainly cut down on processor time. I
admit, I don't know how IRC works very well, but don't different servers
have different channels? Wouldn't you need one bot per server?
Even so, I personally feel this is beyond the mission of Grex. I
feel that the primary mission of Grex is to foster an on-line community
here, not necessarily elsewhere.

Ahmen..
Crack the eggs, smash the bots, shoot the dolts and ice the irc.

Actually, now that I think about it, I doubt that plan would cut down on
the eggdroppings we have here. If someone were to run eggdrop first, it
would tell them that they can't run it here for so and so reasons.
However, we still get large numbers of eggdroppings. So, either people
don't bother to try and run it first, or assume they can beat us.

Aren't there public servers which offer 'permanent' IRC channels already?
I seem to remember our local LUG beiing offered it's own permanent IRC
channel. User Friendly is also advertising it's permanent channel, and I
seem to remember a note there about the organization that was providing
it for them.

a channel isn't a 'bot..
These guys want to run bots to either keep the channel permed
OR - another beauty - to keep an eye out for splits where the
bot can grab control..
Legitimate channel bots arepossible, they can always ask the host.
