Hm, that's a pretty lean agenda. We might be done well before 9:00. Am I
forgetting anything? Yell if there should be any further items.
Since last month's item numbering scheme was such a popular hit, I've
repeated it this month. Again, a mint condition woodla goes to the first
person to figure it out. Announcing what the next six numbers would be
is sufficient proof.

Oh, I did think of something. Dan Gryniewicz was going to look into
companies that could handle online credit card payments for us, so
consider a report on that added to the agenda.

I'd like to ask the board to authorize $28 to purchase a long stapler for
stapling the Grex handbooks. It costs $.25/handbook to get them stapled at
Kinkos, so the stapler will pay for itself after 112 handbooks.
(Note to everyone who's wondering what sane person would pay $28 for a
stapler: the Grex handbooks are printed on 8.5X11 paper which is then folded
in half and stapled in the middle to make a booklet. Normal-sized staplers
can't reach the middle of the paper from the outside, so they won't work.
Office Max had only one model of big ones, and it cost $28. I'd welcome other
suggestions for getting one.)

so, according to this agenda, the gavel will be banging throughout the
meeting? I hope that there's some regular interval, like every 15
seconds.

There's a handbook? I hadn't seen anything about that anywhere else yet.

Yes, there is a 32-page Grex handbook, written by Misti and me, available for
one dollar. You may also request one if you pay for 3 months' membership,
and I'll send it to you.

Jim says (to quote) about $28 for a stapler: No, No, mustn't. I'll come up
with something. How much time do I have? (Just extend the base....).
If you print it out full-page (one page per page) you can staple the corner
or three spots along the edge, but the pages are twice as large.
Jim's not letting Mark buy any new toys. He thinks you can use the stapler
for free at Kinko's if you staple it yourself. More tomorrow. Please bring
a grex booklet to the meeting to show us. (We have not figured out if you
are making copies at home and then paying Kinko's to staple them, or making
copies at Kinko's and then bringing them home to staple them, or....)

32 pages = eight sheets of paper folded down the middle? We are running an
experiment on 8 pages from the recycling bin. Make than 9 just in case.
IF you don't mind a very slight crease, you can do it with a regular stapler,
magic trick, we will demo tomorrow and bring our longest-reach stapler. Jim
says he wants the stapling job, he is experienced now. Bring along about ten
booklets and he will staple them. Can you offer an emailed version too?

Kinkos (last time I checked) doesn't have a long stapler, because they want
you to pay them to put things through their bookletizer machine.
Frankly, I'd really rather not compromise by creasing the booklets. I think
it's worth spending a little money to make a good impression on people that
get one, not to mention the fact that people pay us for them and therefore
have a right to expect them to be decently put together.
But I will see what you have to offer at the meeting.

As one who's been through this from both sides (and as usual) I have opinions
on the stapler question. I suspect that Jim can come up with something that
will work fine, but if it's not going to work really well the frustration
involved will be very great. The stapler head and the little anvil thingie
that bends the points back up really need to meet fairly precisely, a somewhat
hard job on a deep-throated stapler. (More things to flex out of alignment.)
(Mark may have greater tolerance for the staple-remove-restaple-
-remove-cuss-out-manufacturer-restaple sequence than I did, I admit. By
ordering my copy of the booklet (suddenly realizing that I have 2 junior
wizards-in-training in the house), I found that he makes his own envelopes
for the things. I never would have known it wasn't commercially made
from the cut-fold-&-glue job; the giveaway was that the outside was a
map of the USSR, with no spaces for addresses. (Addresses were on
labels stuck on.) *Beautiful* job.)

I would support Mark having the precise tool he needs to do the job easily.
I agree with doing it with no creases, more professional looking.
While I admire keesan's determination to make-do, I don't think that shoudl
be the overriding decision rule for Grex. If Mark thinks he needs a different
stapler, let's get him one. Mark is not some gadget-happy spendthrift that
we need to educate.

Re #13: Thanks Dave! Glad you liked it.
I can't say as I do have a lot of patience for pulling out staples. More to
the point, though, is the fact that someone else will have to take over the
treasuirer job at the end of the year, and it's important that we try to make
it as simple as possible so we can find someone who's willing to do it.

The crease is not actually a crease, you have to look really hard to see
anything, post office will probably crease it more than the stapler. This
is a special high-mouth (?) stapler, very heavy duty, will not go out of
alignment, I can donate it and make do with my little cheapie since I hardly
ever staple anything anyway. Also very comfortable to use, nice rubber feet,
easy to load. We will send along a few hundred staples for it.
Jim offers as an encore to the stapling display, a display of how he uses an
arbor press to crack black walnuts and even coconuts.

discussion about the benefits of the cheaper/simpler/more ecological than
thou lifestyle.

You are welcome to come to the board meeting and help Mark decide whether he
likes our stapler just as well. He seems reasonably happy with the free file
cabinet, free 5-pound scale, and free photocopier. It took Jim a while to
find the almost invisible evidence of where I had folded the paper. We like
Mark's envelopes, Jim says they are worth the $1 alone.
Jim has these grand plans of having Kiwanis build us a second story
over the garage (they suggested this part) that grex staff members would have
access to at any time, which is part of the new electronics dept. they are
promising us, he can give details tomorrow. The new treasurer could keep the
copier, file cabinet, scale and stapler there, together with the Sun. (I
think this is more of a fantasy than a possibility, though).
Mark, may I ask Pax to send me a form to fill out for opening a Money Market
account, I can fill out everything and you would only have to sign a check.
I know you are busy with other things, such as making photocopies of the new
grex booklets (not to speak of finding the time to help write them).
See you all tomorrow.

We all appreciate the effort, but I think overloading the Treasurer with
alternate ways of doing things might cause more trouble than it cures.

Since Mark is the one who has to do the work and live with the results,
I'm inclined to defer to his judgement on what's preferable.

Jim just slightly altered a stapler so that it has a longer reach, in fact
exactly the reach needed for stapling these booklets. (He found one with a
long reach already and filed off a bit of the support). Not only will this
be just as easy to use as the $28 model, it will be faster to use as it
automatically lines itself up on the center fold. No extra creases made.

Jim just filed the stapler so that the staples line up exactly on the center
fold from both ends. Special custom job. This also saves a trip to the
store, and it only took Jim a few hours to design and make. Anyone want to
go into business with Jim mass-producing booklet staplers for nonprofits?
