Yell if there should be any other agenda items.

response 2 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 17 03:33 UTC 1999

We should probably talk about the receipt policy, since it's such a hot
topic.

Is the UPS in section 229, or has it died off? (Uninterruptable power
supply, that is.)

response 4 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 17 04:13 UTC 1999

I want to see the gavel in use for one nanosecond.

On second thought-- the rest of the board might need protective
clothing.

I think we tabled the UPS for now, didn't we? We still need to
find the best quality output units, and get pricing for them.

I want to see more accurate measurement of the actual time required
for the gavel pounding.

A genuine mint condition woodla goes to the first person to figure out
the item labeling scheme in #0.

Our lease agreement with Zingerman's requires us to measure and report
gavel-banging times, so I'd appreciate it if someone could bring a
gavelometer to the meeting.

On a substantive note: Since the lease offered by Flying Dutchman
requires us to carry indemnity insurance, the insurance issue is
inevitably part of the lease agenda item. I wouldn't want to sign the
lease before the board has committed to obtaining the required
insurance. (See Item 72 (item:coop,72) for discussion of the lease and
insurance issues.)

If I show up, I would like to talk about Computer Rescue. Hopefully
gain some enthuesism as a goal of Cyberspace, Inc. I got a bunch of
IBM 396 PS/2s, Model 80s, that have mostly been going over to Kiwanis.
I would like to know if Grex, as an on-line community, is ready to try
to get more local, dial-up users, and provide some one-on-one to those
that could use some help.

Even "dial-up users" can generally telnet in..

response 10 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 00:59 UTC 1999

I'd like to ask the board if they're willing to buy a postal scale for the
auctioneer to use, so I can tell people just how much shipping to pay.
steve
response 11 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 02:18 UTC 1999

If it eases the efforts of the auction person, I think it makes
sense to get one.

response 12 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 06:41 UTC 1999

(I'm one of the people who would benefit from aruba having such a thing.)

I am curious how often it would be used (IE, how often does someone ask
how much shipping they owe), and how much it would cost.
aruba
response 13 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 19:45 UTC 1999

I've shipped a lot of books. Usually it's just one or two, and by now I have
a good idea how much that costs, so i just give the buyer an estimate. But it
would be nice to give an exact amount. (And in Joel's case, he's getting 7"
worth of books, and I don't know how much that'll be until they're weighed.)

response 14 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 19:56 UTC 1999

#9 should be "potential users who need that kind of equipment are _not usually
users of other telnet services.

response 15 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 21 23:19 UTC 1999

(I think it's possible to go to a post office and ask them to weigh the
package without having to immediately pay the postage; you can just ask
them to weigh it and then thank them for telling you the weight. But it's
probalby the case that this is an unnecessary hassle for aruba to be forced
to deal with.)
aruba
response 16 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 22 03:56 UTC 1999

Yeah, I'd rather not lug around a lot of books and wait in line unless I have
to.

Consider the computer rescue (pending T.P. Ryan's presence) and postal
scale items added to the agenda.

Another item: Unauthorized use of Grex logo (and what to do about it).
If you go to http://welcome.to/wearside (which identifies itself as
"Melonite Online") and follow the "Information" link, you'll see the
Grex logo together with a claim that Melonite is partners with Grex and
a few other organizations listed on that page. One of those
organizations sent mail to the grex staff asking if we really are
associated with Melonite, since they are not. Of course, Grex is not
either. (I never heard of Melonite before.) Steve Weiss called this to
the board's attention. The issue is that someone is making bogus claims
about Grex and using the Grex logo, which is an asset of some value to
us, in the process.

Since the lease and insurance topic is of some urgency, I'd like to
schedule that right after the committee reports to ensure adequate time
for discussion.

Here's the revised agenda. I'm not sure if all my time estimates are
reasonable. Anything we don't get to will go on next month's agenda.

There was an omitted number in my original numbering scheme; I've
corrected this. So just ignore the first numbering. The offer of a mint
condition woodla to the first person to decipher the numbering scheme
still stands.

And I notice that back in resp:2, Dan G. suggested receipt policy as an
agenda item. I assume this refers to the issue of under what
circumstances we give out paper receipts. I'm not sure Sindi's
completed her research on this yet, and the discussion here in Coop is
still active. So I'm inclined to think it should be played out more in
Coop before the board takes it up. If anyone feels differently, they
can bring it up under New Business.

regarding the use of the logo: between the introductory portion of newuser
and the opening webpage there should be enough information already to disclaim
any "partnerships" such as that mentioned above. i suggest we ignore it
officially, and individually engage any new people it brings to us (as we
discover them) to disavow them of the notion incorrectly given them.

response 21 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 22 20:32 UTC 1999

That's true if they come through *our* newuser page. In this case, they
don't.

Mark, I think we have an extra postal scale, I will try to bring in tomorrow.
If there is anyone who still does not believe that a cancelled check is
adequate proof for itemizing donations under $250, I will call Ms. Dodea -
what is her number? I don't know why she would know more than the IRS or
United Way but I will check it out. What more research do people want?

Re resp:20 and resp:21 - Marcus is correct. In addition to the Grex
logo and partnership claim, Melonite has a "web newuser" on their site
which will create an account on Grex. It's essentially just like our
web newuser, except that the language about eggdrop and other bots not
being allowed is absent.

response 24 of 50: Mark Unseen   Feb 22 23:46 UTC 1999

I just looked through that site. It claims to be some big provider of
Internet services, including shell accounts. If you say you want a shell
account, it presents a form to fill out, which is basically Grex's web new
user form, but with all references to what Grex is removed, and replacing some
references to the Grex staff with references to the MPUK staff. It of course
submits the form to Grex. There is a disclaimer saying that some of the shell
accounts may be created on servers belonging to some of their partners, rather
than on their own servers. They also have a free e-mail section, claiming
to have teamed up with MSN to bring people free e-mail, and a few other things
like that. That's all quite separate from the page of logos, which lists
their "partners." I think I'd object to both issues.
