     35 steve

Dave Lovelace's independent count agrees with this, as I expect
he'll confirm shortly.

So janc, remmers, and steve are elected for 2-year terms.

   Presumably, 33 members and 36 non-members?

response 7 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 16 16:49 UTC 1998

Thanks to all who voted for me.

Thanks also to Mark, Eric and Dave. Much as I like the candidates that
did get elected, I would have been pleased to see some slightly newer
faces on the Grex board. Not that I'm about to bow out or anything,
but you guys are cool.

Now it is time to start jockeying for position for board positions. I
think we usually don't keep the same person as president for two
consecutive terms, so I'm out for that. I think Mark is willing to
continue as treasurer, so I'm out for that. I'd maybe be willing to do
secretary.

I'd like to abdicate my role as Secretary.

There's no rule that says the chair can't succeed him or herself. In
fact, a few have tried to do just that but were defeated by another
candidate. Personally, I'd be delighted to see Jan break the pattern, as
I think he's been an outstanding chair.

I think it's fine to indicate interest - or lack thereof - in board
positions here. What's normally been done, to make it official, is for
the board members to vote on officers at the January meeting. I'd
recommend that we continue to do that.

(Oops, I forgot to report the number of member and non-member voters. I
have those figures at home, so I'll post them later.)

Out of 99 eligible voting members, 43 cast ballots.

78 non-members voted.

response 13 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 16 23:02 UTC 1998

(There were 85 members elibible to vote. You used the "voters" group, right
John?)
remmers
response 14 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 16 23:10 UTC 1998

(Oops, you're right, 85. The 99 figure came from a word count on the
wrong file. But I did use the "voters" group, and it does have 85
users in it.)

So just a shade more than 50% of the eligible voters actually voted.
Does anyone recall how that compares with past board elections?

Congrats to the winners! I'm amazed that 23 people (besides me)
voted for me. I had predicted that I *might* get 5 votes total. 8-)

I suggest that new grex member Arlo Mates be elected acting President of
Grex, with janc authorized to act as Arlo's proxy (since arlo doesnt
speak English someone has to act as his translator)

Of course Arlo's hands probably arent big enough to hold the grex gavel
yet, but its not like anyone else really wants the job anyway.

But has Arlo been a member for three months or more? Though it was a cute
suggestion.
remmers
response 18 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 23 00:19 UTC 1998

You don't have to *be* a member for three months, you just have to have
*paid* for at least three months.

However, the catch in Arlo's case is that to be president you have to
have been elected to the board, which (in Michigan) means you have to be
at least 18 years of age. So it'll be a while...

Are you sure there is a rule about 18 year olds?

response 20 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 23 02:43 UTC 1998

michigan statutes regarding the formation and management of corporate entities
require it, i think.

Historical note:
Towards the beginning of Grex, Marc Unangst was on the board for a
while, and was under 18 at the time. I think he resigned sometime right
around his 18th birthday, when he left Ann Arbor to go to college. A year
or two later, I was elected to the board, a couple of months before my 18th
birthday, so for a couple of months I was also on the board and under 18.
Sometime not too long after I turned 18, somebody under 18 tried to run for
the board on Arbornet, and people there complained that that would be illegal,
and that it was also illegal for Grex to have had board members under 18.
We did some research on the issue, and found that that was indeed the case,
so since then we've been saying that 18 was the minimum age for board members.

Personally, I think that's a real shame. We have had plenty of users under
age 18 who would have made fine board members since that time, I think.

Anyhow that's rather moot in this case, since I really doubt that Arlo is
interested (or even knows what the Grex board is).

response 23 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 23 16:44 UTC 1998

It was a cute suggestion, but I'm kind of glad that a person has to
be old enough to know what Grex is in order to qualify for president.
richard
response 24 of 40: Mark Unseen   Dec 23 22:28 UTC 1998

read my suggestion more closely....I said Arlo be made "acting President"
The idea is that the actual position of president be left vacant. This
way Jan, weilding arlo's authority, would be able to effectively act as
president without breaking tradition and actualy succeeding himself.
