(The item numbering is more than usually obscure, because my usual
reference library is all packed for the move. Probably danr is the only
other person on Grex with a copy of the reference I got this from, or
with easy access to the info from other sources.)

Perhaps a minor point, but the Board might want to set an official
opening date for nominations for the next board election, which
happens in December. The bylaws state that nominations close on
November 15 but don't specify when they open. I've always tried to
allow about three weeks for nominations, and there have never been
any complaints about that, but I think it might be better for the
Board to specify an opening date, to make everything "official" and
ensure uniformity in the way nominations are conducted.

I'll be happy to continue administering the vote itself, if folks
want me to.

I'd like to add an item to the agenda.

The Detroit Free Press is sponsoring a seminar enititled "A Publicity Tool
Kit for Non-Profits" on Monday, November 9 from 7am to 7pm at the Westin Hotel
in the Renn Cen. The cost is $50 per attendee, which includes the panel
discussions, breakout sessions, breakfast, lunchg, and an evening reception.

The hype:
What is "news"? What is "publicity"? Why do your organization's missions
and values have such an impact on your relationship with the media?

Equipping you with answers to questions like these is the purpose of this
seminar, a public relations event for and about non-profits.

The event will be presented by Detroit's top professionals in media, public
relations, organizational development, technology, and fund raising.

Included:
        * Advanced and beginner sessions including a two-hour
introduction to the media and public relations developed for new staffers,
board members, and volunteers.

        * Moving into partnership with the media
        *       Strategic planning

You'll also recieve an updated Media Resource Guide and a video synopsis of
the day's topics.

Call (313) 222-8804 between 8am and 5pm to register by phone or see

The point to this overlong response is that I think Grex would benefit by a
couple of board and staff members going to this and wondered if we could/cared
to pay half the expense ($50) for two poeple who want to go and learn what
we can about improving Grex's public visibility around Ann Arbor... (with
each attendee paying th remaining $25 for his her or admission, of course.)

The deadline is October 23, so we have some time to think about it -- but not
a lot of time.

Wow. I wish I was inthe Detroit area, and could get to that. It sounds
fascinating, even if one is not in a nonprofit. I took a course in PRE
towards my minor in Communications Studies, and I think that Grex would
benefit from having such knowledge at hand. I would suggest that the current
"publicity director" be among the attendees, if available that day, and even
more than two, if there is interest.

Er, make that "a course in PR" at the end of line 2. *sigh*

Dunno, aside from you and I there seems to be a resounding lack of interest.

Well, I'm interested, I'm just worried about the cost. But I'd like to have
a look at the brochure; maybe the benefits would outweigh the costs. I for
one am severely lacking in inspiration for how to promote Grex, so would be
glad for some outside ideas.

It's actually a quarter page ad in the Freep --- but if you visit the web page
I suspect you'll find even more information than the ad had.

Do we really need publicity when we may be running out of account space soon.
Yes I know local users are more likely to become members & help more with
day to day Grex activites but I think a big publicity drive is a bad idea
if we are running out of account spaces.

response 10 of 43: Mark Unseen   Sep 26 19:40 UTC 1998

Pffft, I say go for it. I say Board should provide some help if we have
members who are interested, but don't have income. A scholarship of some
sort.
I would rather have the problem of allocating too little account space for
too much demand, than have so little demand we don't need to worry about
account space.

It probably means it's time for us to add more user disk space.

... and disk is cheap.

response 13 of 43: Mark Unseen   Sep 27 04:35 UTC 1998

We need local publicity, because we believe that local users are the
most likely to become financial supporters.
mta
response 14 of 43: Mark Unseen   Sep 27 13:42 UTC 1998

As to the "scholorship" idea, we have an informal solution in place. If you
know of someone who's interested in becoming a member but can't afford it,
donate on their behalf.

I've done it and I know several other people have done it as well.

I meant scholarship to the seminar Misti.

response 16 of 43: Mark Unseen   Sep 27 19:56 UTC 1998

We always need more local publicity.

It looks like we may not run out of uid's as quckly as I'd
thought, too.

PR is not just getting info to "the masses", it is also communication WITHIN
an org, such as (in our case) communicating effectively with members as a
group, and even the vast number of USERS, and even vaster numbers of POTENTIAL
users. Attendees might even learn something that will help us to better
present our ideals and goals in such a way that we both attract better the
type of user we desire (conf participants and donors), and discourage those
we do not (e-mail-only non-member users). I hope we don't let this
opportunity slip through our fingers.

response 18 of 43: Mark Unseen   Sep 29 02:09 UTC 1998

Heh. I doubt that we'll let it slip through our fingers. We've
at least 22,000 users who aren't a part of the conferencing fold.

re resp:15

Oops, that'll teach me to check which item I'm responding to. ;)

That I think would be a great idea if Grex had the money to spare...

Jim is still working on connecting the Dexter-Chelsea seniors computing class
to grex. They have no internet connection yet. He will talk to an instructor
Monday and try to set up a time for some grex volunteer (Misti or Valerie)
to go teach a class there. We can supply them with $20 grex computers, all
set up to automatically connect to grex, and with newuser accounts all set
up.

response 21 of 43: Mark Unseen   Oct 3 01:26 UTC 1998

Will they have access to a web browser or will they using Picospan?
keesan
response 22 of 43: Mark Unseen   Oct 3 02:21 UTC 1998

Preferably using grex and Picospan, that is the whole point of this. We may
know more Monday. And we are told there are a couple of housebound seniors
who cannot go to class but would like a window on the world, Jim is willing
to take them computers and I can try to teach the basics. The computer class
is being taught Windows but nothing yet about the Internet. SOmeone told them
WIn3.1 machines are not internet compatible, they are waiting for newer ones.

false in spades ...
