Grex FAQ discussion item
|
Aug 12 18:48 UTC 1998 |
The Grex FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document at
http://cyberspace.org/faq.html was recently revised extensively and
brought up-to-date, as was much of the rest of Grex's website. If memory
serves, Steve Weiss did most of the work on revising the FAQ, and it's a
really nice job.
In looking the FAQ over, I thought it might benefit from additional
sections on the conferences and Grex governance, placed near the top.
The FAQ with my proposed additions can be viewed at
http://cyberspace.org/~remmers/faq.html. Comments and suggestions are
welcome.

I should add that the topics of governance and conferencing are already
well-covered by links from Grex's main page. But I thought it would be
useful to cover them in the FAQ as well. My additions condense the
language in the existing documents and also contain links to those
documents.

I looked at these additions, and find them to be in the spirit of the
FAQ (i.e. short and informative). I plan on revising the FAQ aain, to
include more common questions that were missed in the earlier passes. I
will use the version John has produced as my starting point for this.
I wonder whether we might lump the two new governance questions into the
"general" category. I think it would be helpful to keep the conferencing
questions separate, though.

Since Grex's participatory governance is somewhat unique for an online
system, I put it in an a separate category near the top to call
attention to it. Putting it into the "General" category, which is also
at the top, would probably have a similar effect. Another approach would
be to keep it in a separate category but retitle the category
"Governance and financing" or something like that, and add a question
like "How can I donate to Grex", to emphasize the fact that Grex is
user-supported.

Any member of Grex *is* eligible to run for the Board. It's only after
they're elected that they have to figure out how to get to the meetings,
technically.

Agreed (and agreeing that Valerie's wording is therefore unsuitable as it
stands), but the thing as it stands is seriously misleading. Valerie's right
that *something* should be done about it.

Replacing "run" with "serve" might fix it. Something like: "Any member
of Grex who is able to attend the Board of Directors' monthly meetings
in Ann Arbor is eligible to serve on the Board."

Only *individual* members are eligible to run for director - institutional
members may not.

Okay, so revise the wording in resp:8 to read "Any individual member
of Grex ..."

Any member of grex is eligible to run for the Board of Directors.
Board members are expected to attend the monthly meetings, which
are held in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
