Why..? Mark Unseen   Mar 27 18:28 UTC 2000

Emailed staff a few times today: more clowns and eggdrops, bnc,
        spoofing, crashers and other haqueer-goodies.

At that time, load was UP, and - update jumped it WAAY up..

For grins & chuckles, I tried to DL a file via lynx - from myself.
No problem - it started downloading a 274846K tarball.

I can sympathise with, and understand, the 100K file-attach limit
for mail. Is there some ideological reason we can't manage this
        sort of limit for lynx?

I didn't try ftping into my box, but then - I have ftp disabled.

I'm going to chuck this post into coop too, but - I'd like to see
some discussion on why in the world it's an accepted, acceptable.
ideologically Good Thing(tm) to allow *everyone* to engage in this
        sort of access.

Yes, I know root & staff are inundated.. I can accept that - most
of us can. We also accept that they do a good job, we trust them,
and we trust staff and borg. Most of us have also had the joy of
experiencing the noise, load, and space-problems that these clowns
        incur.

I'd proposed changing the first three screens of the login-text,
but this change was considered "rude".Fine. I accepted that too,
suggesting someone on staff or borg - or even some "acceptable
user" - prettify and PC the text, (which was simply blunt - not
        rude). This went nowhere.

To this day, and since that time, we have had assorted newbies get
into party and - right off the bat - start asking about running
bots, bouncers and hacqueer-toys. We try to explain how this is
not allowed, and why - in several different speech-modes, no less.
Sometimes it works, but not everytime. Further, there are dozens
of users we _don't_ see, with the same questions - and apparently
no intention or desire to advertise themselves or their aims.
