2000 first BoD mtg. date and agenda Mark Unseen   Jan 6 23:54 UTC 2000

This item is for publicizing the agenda for the January, 2000 meeting of the
Grex Board. Since it is still at issue, we can also use it for arriving at
a date on which to hold the meeting. I'm doing this since the last thing I
heard was a selection of dates, including tonight, which are possibilities,
but to which not all memers of the new board have responded.

Dates up for consideration seemed to be:
        January 6, 10, 11, 12, and 13

So far, we've heard from mdw, janc, other, eeyore and remmers.

janc: all dates ok.
mdw: tuesday (11) no, wednesday (12) ok, thursday (13) maybe.
eeyore: any day ok, with notice.
remmers: since he suggested the dates, i assume they're all ok.
other: prefer 6,10,11 or 12.

We still need to hear from steve and flem.

I propose wednesday 12 january as the date for the first meeting of 2000.

As for the agenda: John, would you or can you handle this for the first
meeting, and after we elect officers, the duty will pass as appropriate?

Happy new year everybody!

I take it we're not meeting on the 6th? 12 is fine by me.

response 2 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 7 03:03 UTC 2000

I'm going to have to check tomorrow, since I have written my next week's
scheduale, but forgot to bring it home with me. I *think* that either
Wednesday night or Thursday night should be fine.

I'm still OK any night. We should set a date *soon*.

response 4 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 7 14:49 UTC 2000

Okey....I close Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. That leaves either Monday or
Wednesday night for me.
(Sorry, but I did warn you guys that I had to write my scheduales...)

Hmm, apparently my emails on the subject have not been successful. any
of the nights proposed are fine with me.

Well, then. Wednesday seems to be the day. I'll call STeve and see what he
says, since he doesn't seem to be bbsing lately.

Heh. If you newbies are going to be setting up meetings, you're going
to have to get some of the finer points down, like figuring out when
it's going to start, and reserving a place to meet.

As board folks know, I was in the process of organizing a meeting by
email. But then I stopped as a result of various preoccupations, one being
replacement of my old computer by a new one, an unintended side effect
being screwed-up email, which I'm still working on getting fixed. Also,
like STeve, I've been away from bbs for a few days and just learned
about this item, although you didn't necessarily know that. I apologize
for that.

Traditionally we've met late in the month, but I was pushing for
early in the month this time because of the need to select officers.
I was beginning to think maybe earliness didn't matter that much,
especially since Mark expressed a willingness to continue treasuring
until the new treasurer is selected. However, my zealousness
regarding the earlier date seems to have been infectious, to judge
from the existence of this item. I can see that the newbies are
really champing at the bit. :)

Since Eric posted this item almost a week before the 12th, and it calls
for input on the agenda, I think that we're more or less okay regarding
the bylaws' requirement of a week's public notice on the agenda, if
nobody objects. (We've fallen a day or two short in the past, and
nobody's objected.) (The bylaws are highly recommended reading for
any new board folks who haven't read them yet, by the way.)

So I just went ahead and reserved the usual place -- the Kids Room
at Zingerman's -- for Wednesday January 12, at 7:30 p.m. (I have a
possible commitment earlier that makes starting before 7:30
difficult.)

Following past practice, I'll preside until a new chair is selected,
at which point I'll pass the gavel.

My next response will be the official agenda.

Regarding item 7: Lease Renewal -- A couple of months ago, the
Board voted to renew our lease, which expires in a few months.
While I was composing response #11, I received a call from
Susan Watrous. She indicated that Flying Dutchman no longer
manages the property where Grex is housed, and she doesn't
know who does. We'll obviously need to gather more facts.

Semantics question: Why is the gavel banging always "throughout"? Is it
because the bang signifies the beginning of the formal meeting which requires
the quorum, and the quorum isn't always filled immediately? I must admit it
seemed humorous at first when it looked like remmers would be banging the
gavel continuously until someone replaced him.

response 15 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 21:55 UTC 2000

Gavels are banged to restore order as well as to begin and end a
meeting.

response 16 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 10 22:27 UTC 2000

They are also pounded just for the sheer joy and pleasure of gavel pounding..

How's remmers going to act when he won't have a gavel to bang anymore? I've
gathered that he really enjoys it.

He'll just have to be satisfied with the one he uses at
home to call dinner to order.

response 19 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 11 02:07 UTC 2000

An item for the agenda: the new board needs to decide who should be on the
signature card (and therefore able to write checks) for the bank account.
Traditionally we have had a couple of backup people on the card just in case
the treasurer isn't available for some reason.

Very interesting about Flying Dutchman no longer being our landlord. I can't
say as I'm too broken up about it.

response 22 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 11 12:31 UTC 2000

Hey, I was the gavel pounder back in 1992 when the Board first got
organized. I pounded it for a year and then passed it on to someone
else. No withdrawal symptoms that time, and I'm sure there won't be
this time either. May my successor enjoy the use of it.

And to call dinner to order, I use a gong, not a gavel.

response 24 of 40: Mark Unseen   Jan 11 13:44 UTC 2000

my personal favorites are the gavels which make the sound of breaking glass
when banged. but only if this is due to the internal construction of the
gavel as opposed to actually being banged on glass and breaking it. in fact,
i might propose that one of these gavels be obtained as a backup in the event
that the official Grex gavel is ever taken ill.
