Donations for the Fifth Great Grex Auction Mark Unseen   Nov 15 04:08 UTC 1999

It's time to start the Fifth Great Grex Auction! Hopefully by the end of
the month it will be up and running.

That means we need donations, and we need to decide whether to make any
changes to the rules this time. Sara Arthurs (swa) and Jeff Carey (coyote)
have graciously volunteered to be your auctioneers.

Some examples of donated items from the last auction:

A homemade apple pie, kits for making sundials, a dot matrix printer, a
cheesecake, two Indian elephants, lots of board games, a Next computer
system, a Sega Genesis system, old software, a screen tent, web page
design, batches of chocolate truffles, an astrology chart and report, a
cross-stitched birthday angel, pans of fudge, a complete Sunday breakfast,
a full MBTI consultation, a Shakuhachi flute, an air-pop popcorn popper,
puzzles, paintings, calendars, spider plants, and lots and lots of books.

If you have something to donate, enter a response in this item describing
what you're offering. The auctioneers and I will keep track of the offers
and enter them as items in the auction conference. I'll enter another
item to discuss rule changes, and generally how the auction should be
conducted.

Have at it!

I have a variety of board games, all complete and with instructions. I
can get them to the A2 area via gypsi, or will gladly ship to more exotic
locales. 8^} I can think of four off the top; will provide descriptions
and titles as the time draws nearer.

I'll toss in 2 pans of fudge, each to be auctioned separatly.

I'll try to find some other things to donate.

Are the auctioneers interested in starting a new auction conference,
or re-using one of the old ones? Does swa need to be made a fw in
the cf. they use?

Of course, I'm willing to bake an apple pie again.

Re #3: We need a new conference, auction5 (alias auction), with swa, coyote,
and me as fws. (Hopefully they'll do all the work and I'll just watch. :))

All donations are welcome, however if you can manage to enter a full
description of what you're donating here, that will save the auctioneers
having to bug you for it. If you prefer, send mail to the auctioneers
describing the donation.

I'll donate:

Ten Handmade Envelopes and One Envelope Template

Ten paper envelopes made by aruba from a paper of your choice, in a size or
sizes of your choice. Plus one template made out of plexiglass so you can
make your own envelopes in the future. (Instructions included.)

 Minimum bid: $10

I'll donate one original 5x7" unmatted print of the Golden Gate Bridge. A
scan of it can be seen at:

http://www.tech.mtu.edu/~dmbrodbe/photos/wc/goldengate.jpg

(Note that the graininess in the bottom part of the picture is a scanner
artifact, and does not appear on the actual print.)

Minimum bid: $5

Thanks to all who've agreed to donate. I'm excited about getting this going.

We need more donations! I will donate:

One Keytronics cordless keyboard, right out of the box. (I sent mine in for
repair, and they sent me back a new one. I haven't used it since.) Works
with an IR port on the keyboard that talks to an IR module plugged into the
keyboard port of the computer. Good up to 20 feet, as I recall. (Certainly
from farther away than you can see the screen.) Manual and original packaging
included.

Minimum bid: $20.

Does it have a built-in mouse?

Separate question: how much interest would there be in 1970s rock vinyl
LPs? With a $5 minimum, presumably I would make up a couple of grab
bags.

I've got a bunch of old gaming books to donate. I don't remember specific
titles....I'll check when I'm home for Thanksgiving.

Re #9: No built-in mouse. (Do cordless keyboards with built-in mice exist?)

I've got something here that provokes openness and sharing. I call it
"tequila".

BTW, on my Conference Hot List, I discovered that, when it checks the auction
conference, I get the error message "Failed Security Checkpoint." Howcum?
i
response 18 of 49: Mark Unseen   Nov 26 03:33 UTC 1999

I peeked at the last auction cf. (auction4) before creating the new one
(auction5). Auction4 looked to be done & over with, so i reset the name
"auction" to point to the new auction5. I also set up auction5 as a
closed conference - only people on a short list can get in - so that
the fw's could do "decoration and set-up" before "opening for business".
You've probably got "auction" in your .cflist...PicoSpan looks it up and
sees that "auction" refers to the auction5 cf, then notices that you are
not on the list of people to let into auction5, so it spits out the error
message that you noted. You'd get the same thing trying to join agora32
(winter99-00), amoung others.

Hmmm! We could auction off the right to be "#1!!!" in the first agora of
the next millenium.....should we?

response 19 of 49: Mark Unseen   Nov 26 03:50 UTC 1999

Who wants to wait a year to be #1?
i
response 20 of 49: Mark Unseen   Nov 26 04:43 UTC 1999

(I'm indulging in Marketing-Speak.....we'll hawk the other one similarly
in next fall's auction:)

Yes! Do it! :)
i
response 22 of 49: Mark Unseen   Nov 27 02:08 UTC 1999

Okay by me if the auction & agora fw's sign off on the idea. What say
ye, ladies and gentlemen?

response 23 of 49: Mark Unseen   Nov 27 15:46 UTC 1999

Yeah, but how do you really garuntee that it will be the number 1 spot?
i
response 24 of 49: Mark Unseen   Nov 27 18:15 UTC 1999

A very simple little abuse of cfadm powers is all that's needed.
