Tipsheets
|
Nov 1 02:01 UTC 1999 |
I've discovered, to my chagrin, a problem with the Grex handbook which we give
out to new members. In the section about "Selecting a Shell", it mentions
that users can request "tipsheets" for three shells (menu, bbs, and C-shell)
by sending a SASE to me. No one ever did that until this week, and so I never
worried about it before. But now I discover that I don't have any copies of
the tipsheets, and Misti says that although they did exist several hard disks
ago, she has no copies anymore either.
So... It seems to me that having tipsheets for new members is not a bad idea.
But someone would need to write them. So what do people think? Should I
delete the references before I print more handbooks? Is anyone willing to
take a crack at writing some tipsheets?

I would be willing to assist with writing the Tipsheets. Just let me know
the data they should contain.

I think they would be reasonable things to do.

Re #1: I think they should contain short lists of things that would be
helpful to new users. Your help would be most welcome, Daniel - maybe you
could start by writing a short list of BBS commands, and posting it here for
comments and additions?

Might anyone have one of the old tipsheets somewhere, so we could just
copy it?

Would it work to just enter a "tips" item, let folks enter
what they think would be helpful commands, then a volunteer
could edit the info into a handout?

Sounds like an excellent way to handle it. Maybe agora would be the
best conference, for maximum coverage.

I looked in Agora. Didn't find an item about this. Did I miss
it, or has Aruba been busy? I'd suggest a list of Unix commands
ordered by usefulness to the beginner. Ls, rm, ...

I'm sorry, I've been busy. I think I'll wait until the next agora now.

You mean "ls" not "Ls", I presume?

He's probably just capitalizing the first letter of the sentence.
