Time for a restart, eh?
|
Sep 12 02:00 UTC 1999 |
Hi, this is Sarmad Gilani, the person who caused the stir when I posted #121
about Grex and its curent and possible future status.
I know I'm no member or anyone "important" at Grex if you will, but by looking
at the length of Coop conference I think its time for a restart (cleanup) of
the conference.
Hope this doesn't cause another stir :)
Thanks,
Sarmad.

Coop last had a restart in July 1998, so it's been a bit over a year. I
think Coop is usually restarted about once a year. So I agree that it's
time. Maybe it could be restarted at the same time fall Agora starts up.
And I agree with Rane's comment.

problem is, void and dang are the fw's of coop and who knows if they
even read the conf anymore to know a restart is being requested?

How many other cf's are w/o fw's, or have inactive fw's?

To judge by PicoSpan's records, a fw was in this cf this afternoon. But
coop's fw's may have their own plans, thoughts, time constraints, etc. on
this issue.

there are many confs that dont have active fw's-- usually either the
fw has been reaped, or has simply forgotten about the conf. For
instance, the Arts conf. lists four fw's-- Hawkers, Redeye, Barbarella,
and Ominous. All four were reaped long ago, yet the conf is still
active. I would think cfadmin should generate a list of confs that
have fw's who've been reaped. It looks bad when newusers come to grex
and join a conf, and if they try to email and get response from the fw,
they get none, because the fw isnt on grex anymore.

(Heh. The "Hawkers, Redeye, etc." thing is a joke. The real fw's are
hawkeye, remmers, arabella, and omni. Haven't seen hawkeye for a while,
but the other three are definitely still around.)

fw's should put their handles and/or real nbames..not fake names
on the conf entrance pages-- elsewise you confuse people who read the
conf.

In some conferences, confusion is part of the point. Let's not make
rules.

i tend to be something of a laissez-faire-witness. there are no
objections from me about restarting coop. now we just need to hear from
dang.
richard....oh, what's the use. nothing i say will make a difference
anyway.

Hmm... re the last coupla points, why is it that so many of the conferences
seem to be dead, vegetating, or sleeping? The most active conferences are
agora, cflirt (obvious reasons), and coop. The rest come after a steep
downward slope. Were all these conferences active before my time?

Conference admin generates a list weekly to look for reaped fws and fws
nearing the point of reap. Those who have been reaped are removed from
the fw list for security reasons. This is handled every week, I used to
do it. Possibly they are still listed in item 0, though.

Would it not make sense to combine some of the less active cf's, especially
if one or more lack fw's?

(it might, but I offer the example of Chinet, which combined and/or
killed off conferences deemed inactive. right now, there's only
two conferences with maybe a dozen users. there are other variables,
sure, but it's still an example of what might happen.)

That depends on how you want to measure things. Certainly, if a
conference hasn't had any new responses in 6 months I think most would
agree that the conference is dormant, but I've seen low activity
conferences which seemed useful to its participants. I'd hesitate
trying to come up with a metric for that.

What I don't get: Why is it that most of the conferences get restarted after
150 or so items, but cflirt is on its 380th?

I like aligned events. As I remember the election, a new board takes office
at the New Year. Starting a new edition of coop at the same time just seems
neater and cleaner to me.
And it's only a month and a half, or less, away.

Re#20: Most conferences don't have any official amount of time to restart
after. Some FWs prefer a bulky conference. Others prefer a trimmed-down one.
