Is Grex REALLY Going Down? PLEASE READ!
|
Aug 28 01:30 UTC 1999 |
I use Grex a lot for internet access. I see that the motion to rescind the
suspension of Grex services was defeated (I supported the resoultion to
rescind and did not agree with the Board). Does this mean when i try to
connect to Grex and login in the near future itll just not let me in? (e.g.
Grex is REALLY going down?) That would be really bad for me. I enjoy Grex and
its bulletin boards, email, Lynx, and shells. You just can't get this stuff
anywhere anymore, not even if you pay a whole lot. Only Grex has this
"community-atmosphere" to it which is why I joined Grex in the first place.
Please respond to me by email (sarmad@cyberspace.org) and let me know what
this vote means to the normal Grexer.
Thank you,
Sarmad Gilani

What this means is that you can't read. You obviously haven't been reading
anything going on in coop *or* agora, which is where you would find all
the information you need on the subject at hand.
I doubt I'm even going to take the time to answer your question. Someone
else will.
cc'd to email.

Sarmad, rest assured that Grex is NOT going away.
We've had some discussions about what we'd do in the case of a
Michigan law which, had it gone into effect, would have severely
hampered Grex's operations.
We (Grex) were a part of a legal action to stop this law, and have
been successful in preventing its activation, at least for now and
possibly forever.
Grex isn't going away--what the board did, which you have heard
innaccurately it seems, was to vote to temporarily suspend access
while we figured out what to do. This was done at the July board
meeting, when we knew we'd not have another scheduled board meeting
before the law could possibly go into effect (August 1st). We were
waiting for the judge's ruling on this, but just in case--in that
very small case that we didn't get the injunction, we wanted the
start of a game plan that could take effect quickly.
You should read the items in the coop conference about all this.

[ Anyone still think the resolution that was defeated was easy to
understand? ]
It's extremely unlikely grex would be shutting down in the near future
due to this. The only chance would be if the court does something very
odd and completely reverses its position and then some. I don't believe
anyone seriously expects this to happen.

Re 3, I beleive sarmad's confusion was to the *resolution*, not the *motion*
-- Dave was easy to understand, whoever wrote the resolution into the minutes
was *not* easy to understand. Sarmad knew what the motion was doing, but she
was confused as to the resolution which now stands. OTOH, I don't think she
read the part about how only members can make binding votes....

Thanks for clearing things up.
Don Joffe was correct in what he said about me and my understandings of the
issue. Except for one thing; I'm a "he", not a "she" :)
Thanks,
Sarmad.

Why do people think this person isn't real?
This person is real, unless we have someone her who has access
to Illionis state university computers.

Sarmad Gilani sounds like an Arabic name to me. Or Albanian?
Gilani - from the town of Gilan (Gnjilane)? Am I close?

I think this person may not be keeping up with coop and was thus
confused. this version of coop is over a year old with many long items
in it. its probably (being the beginning of fall) a good time for
a restart.

Thanks to Steve for backing me up, of course I'm a real person!! And yes, I
have access to ISU computers (legally). As for 'keesan's question on my name;
yes Sarmad my first name is indeed Arabic, however Gilani is referring to the
town of Gilan in ancient Iran, not Albania. However I am Pakistani, not Irani.
Interesting, 'eh? :
Sorry about any inconveniences to anyone 'bout this.

See this is why I like Grex; at some other place (like IRC) would just harass
you and call you an idiot or stupid. Here, people actually respond and get
involved. Good Goin' Grexers! :)

btw anyone here have AOL4? please email me as i need you to see if my website
loads up ok in it. Thanks (sarmad@grex.cyberspace.org)

Don, to be honest with you, IRC was the first program that I ever ran on the
Internet and that was about 6 years ago when the only browser was like Mosaic
and people on IRC were actually helpful :)
I liked Mosaic, so simple and it crashed every several minutes.. My Netscape
just keeps goin and goin and goin without locking up! :)
