Grex System Announcements
|
Mar 22 05:26 UTC 2002 |
This item is for system announcements (new computer equipment on Grex,
system upgrades, Grex meetings, etc.). Personal announcements should go
back in item 2; Grex system *problems* belong in the next item (#4).

Just got another batch in my inbox, about 150 messages this time, all
identical. Staff is going to get pretty annoyed with me if this keeps up.

Have you reported this spam to the ISP of origin? Is there some way for staff
(grex) to block repeat messages or is this not worth the effort?

I've reported it. No response yet. If it keeps up I guess I should call
them up, I can't have my mailbox getting filled up all the time.

Can someone again post instructions on how to block mail from a particular
address, using Pine? Or with a particular subject line, etc.

How to block mail using Pine:
From the main menu,
(1) press 'S' for setup
(2) press 'R' for rules
(3) press 'F' for filters
(4) press 'A' to add a filter
(5) scroll down to "From pattern = <No value set>" and press return
(6) enter the email address (or just the @domain part) of the place you want
filtered and press enter
(7) scroll down past "ACTIONS BEGIN HERE" and you'll see "Filter Action = ";
highlight "() Delete" and press enter
(8) press "E" to exit filters and Pine will ask you if you want to save, so
say yes

I just looked in PINE. S for setup - no R for Rules in this version of Pine
at grex. C for config gets me to a line Display filter= <no value set>.
How does one filter using grex's version of Pine (somewhat outdated)?

You might be tempted to use Pine's "initial keystrokes" facility to
approximate a filter: do NOT do it. If no messages match the "select"
criteria, you command will be applied to the *current* message, whichever one
that is (usually the first new message in the box, I think).

I am getting a *lot* of errors in Backtalk lately. IE shows me this.
I get errors reading items, responding to items, sometimes selecting
the item from the main menu for visiting conferences with new response
items. I got this error a couple of times coming into this item to
post my complaint, but hit "refresh" and eventually got the item on my
screen.

The reason is that Grex's Internet connection keeps going down.

Ah. It's good to know that, but I've been getting similar errors for a
few weeks now. It seems like it shouldn't be happening so often. If I
may ask, what's being done about it?

oh, I've been having other problems with Backtalk.. specifically in
abalone, not pistachio. Sometimes the "items with new responses"
check box is the only one that works, and the others "all
items", "forgotten items," etc. keep pulling up items with new
responses. It's frustrating.

Dunno what to say. I use netscape (old version 4.7X?) running under
linux behind a firewall using a proxy server (squid) and displaying
and using the keyboard/mouse on a different linux system with no
problems. I would be hard pressed to blame it on the server for
the idiotic faults of yer Windoze box. (get a real operating system!)

I haven't seen the problems either, and I am using windoze boxes.
A flakey internet is probably the correct diagnosis.
