ASIA SEEKING TO TOP WORLD'S TALLEST: In light of 9-11, many American
architects are scaling back world's-tallest projects. Adrian Smith of
Skidmore, Owings and Merrill noted to "Newsweek" that "I've heard developers
say, 'Let's not do something quite so distinctive. Maybe it's ok to be the
second tallest.'" However, Asian architects and developers feel differently.
Hong Kong architect William Lim commented, "High rises are the Pyramids of
our time." Currently, China has two world's-tallest projects still on track,
the Shanghai World Financial Center at 1,509 feet by 2008 and Hong Kong's
Union Square at 1,575 feet by 2007.

KONE ACQUIRES METRO ELEVATOR: KONE, Inc. has acquired the service business

ACLU INVESTIGATING WASHINGTON D.C. METRO SYSTEM: The American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) is investigating claims that the Washington D.C.
Metro system has violated the civil rights of the disabled by having broken
elevators and no other means to assist the disabled in traveling on the
system, according to the "Washington Post." The investigation was opened
after an incident in which a wheelchair passenger was unable to find a
working elevator and was fined US$25 for violating public speech laws while
expressing his frustration. Metro officials have called for subway managers
to devise a better way to assist the disabled when elevators are not available.

THE LATEST ON THE WTC FUTURE DESIGN: "Newsweek" updated the design status
for the World Trade Center (WTC) site in its May 20 issue. Currently, both
the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. and the New York New Jersey Port
Authority have control over what will be designed in the footprints of the
WTC. The two groups should announce the design team in early June and that
team will have until July 1 to come up with six different design schemes. In
the meantime, a citizen's group put together Imagine New York public
workshops. What is clear is the ideas by the citizens and the ideas of the
officials vary greatly. And the big question is does lower Manhattan even
need the 10 million square feet of lost office space rebuilt? A preliminary
design for 7 WTC indicates a glass high rise shaped like a parallelogram
with a stainless-steel-mesh base.

METRO ESCALATOR INCIDENT: Four Washington D.C. Metro escalator passengers
were involved in an incident at Union Station on Thursday, May 23. The first
passenger was on a walker and insisted on taking the escalator instead of
the elevator as a system manager suggested. When she reached the top, she
fell, causing the following three passengers to become entangled. All four
passengers were taken to the hospital, treated and released.

ELEVATOR MACHINERY AND THE WTC SOUTH TOWER: According to "USA Today," the
elevator machinery room on the 81st floor of the World Trade Center south
tower helped saved the lives of at least 16 people on 9-11. The machine room
contained 12 24-ton elevator hoists which enabled high-speed express units
move from the lobby to the 78th floor. The Otis Elevator Co. 339HT machines
were among the largest of its kind when installed over 30 years ago and
caused the design of Stairway A away from the southeast corner where the
jet's path ran. Some of the eight-feet tall, 13-by-eight-feet wide machines
were found intact at Ground Zero, still bolted to the specially reinforced
beams that held them.

SHORT-TERM EXPANDABLE BUILDINGS PROPOSED FOR WTC SITE: The latest proposal
for the World Trade Center (WTC) site is to build several low-rise
buildings, up to eight-stories, that can be built in a short time frame, but
can be made taller later. Constructing small buildings would allow the space
to be used immediately rather than leaving the site open for the lengthy
time period that it would take to build the taller buildings that will
inevitably replace the WTC towers. The idea was told to the Associated Press
by Alexander Garvin of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. A final
decision on the design of the site is scheduled to be made by December 1.

projects. In the Hong Kong area, there was little demand for commercial
projects, with 2001 seeing a total of 505,000 square feet added to the
office space market and a vacancy rate which rose modestly to 7.3%. The
five-star hotel market will likely stay soft with some activity possible in
late 2002.
