Tales from the 'hood Mark Unseen   Oct 5 04:45 UTC 2000

Earlier tonight the radio traffic in this district of CPD had a number
of items about 'such and so' unit being 'hold me down' on a seminar on
the new anti-gang law that replaced the one that was struck down. You
gotta admire the sense of humor of the dispatchers as before long the
calls were 'such and so unit is in a gang and loitering'...(probably an
excellent time for mopes to do their bad thing but what the hey, they
rob radio shack not shop there...)

Anyways, later that night headed out to the local arab bodega for some
cigs, beer, and milk for the baby and boy I tell yah, the boys in blue
(well tactical units in street clothes) didn't waste any time applying
the new rules of the game. Had some badboys spread out over the hood of
the unmarked blocking the entire lane of traffic while they looked them
over and had apparently come upon a scam I hadn't heard of. There were
ripped open bags of Doritos 3-d on the roof with little baggies of
granular whitish substance...seems one of the local 'merchants' has hit
on the idea of buying bag sealers from Sam's Club and resealing Doritos
bags with merchandise not intended by Frito-Lay inside. I gathered from
talking to the clerk (who had an 1867 VE-II Italian 10c coin he'd wanted
me to put a value on- a woping 75 cents to a dollar- far more than I'd
originally thought when he showed it to me a couple days ago) that even
he had no idea that was the scam, he just figured they were 'bangers
hanging near the theater (where the new Denzel flick was playing). They
were buying Doritos from him and as far as he knew simply hawking them
on the street to patrons going to the cinema which so long as they don't
block the entrance he didn't mind. He commented he'd wish they take
that business further uptown..."sell it to the yuppies, they ain't got
no souls ". Its an odd store, run by an arab who hangs with and employs
the homies, has a Bush/Cheney tag plus various socialist posters in the
doorway - the falastinian owner is pissed because he says up to half way
through the tuesday debates he says whenever Gore was speaking he got
full screen, but frequently when Bush was speaking it was split screen
with a shakey camera on Bush and Gore making faces. I hadn't noticed
until he mentioned it having dismissed it as merely shitty camera work.
He says its just an example of how the media portrays the little guy
just trying to make a living is the bad guy and how its all part of the
plot to make everybody work for the state. (He only recently has been
allowed to stay open past 1AM on weekends to 2AM (despite the local bars
closing at 4am) by the city (a DNC stronghold))

Anyways, I am happy to see the rapid deployment of the new tool to get
the 'bangers off my streets.

Actually, Mike, I thought that byand large #0 was a reasonable example of a
particular urban style of narrative.

I probably just have a bad case of sentence-length envy.. They say it's
now how long they are, but how you use them, but I've never fully believed
  that..

Stay away from James Joyce, then. You'll get suicidal.

A kid was attacked by a pit bull and a neighbor rescued the kid by
shooting the dog with a pistol. Isn't it nice to see that even after
over a quarter century of 'gun control' here in chicagoland there are
still common ordinary citizens who understand the difference between
'legal' and 'right'.

From what I understand the conversation went something like "Gun? What
gun? That there dog died of lead poisoning".

re #6: Obviously, the city should outlaw the keeping of pit bulls and other
vicious dogs, making the gun unnecessary. I'm surprised that the dog owner
didn't sue the shooter.

Re#9: Do you happen to know what breed the dog was in _Little Rascals_?
And why not pass a law outlawing criminals? I'm sure that would work
equally as well. As for lawsuits, there has to be money involved to
interest lawyers. Its more likely the kids momma will shoot the dog
owner or the dog owner shoot the shooter. This here's chicagoland,
where guns are outlawed.

The problem was not the gun, it was not even the dog (I've worked with dogs
and various other animals most of my life). The problem was the negligent
owner, who didn't bother to maintain his pet so that it would be a safe
addition to the local community, and not a danger.

As far as new tactics for criminals, there's always someone one step farther
ahead...

"...pit bulls and other vicious dogs..." One of the friendliest, gentlest,
most interesting dogs I've ever met was a pit bull. Come to think of it,
that's the only pit bull I've ever met.

I didn't mean to imply that they were all vicious. I think they should outlaw
vicious chihuahuas, too.

I'm no doggie expert by a long shot, but I've heard from such experts that
some breeds can go from licking a baby's face to taking off your arm in the
blink of an eye if something ticks them off.

There's clearly a difference in the violent potential of a pit bull,
a chihuahua, and a British bull mastiff, so there's porbably some truth to
that.

Dogs can be interesting. My brother & sister-in-law once had a half-
chow dog. It distinguished *very* sharply between family (their little
girl could step on it's tail, play with it's food, anything - no problem)
and strangers (they got rid of it after moving to a no-fenced-yards town
for fear that it'd maul a little kid who accidently wandered within reach
of its chain). 'Twas an awesome guard dog when they lived way out in the
country.

Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to biting than other dogs. Also,
certain breeds of dogs do more damage when they bite than other dogs. A
pit bull who attacks someone will do more damage than a pug for
instance. Some dog breeds are prone to fear biting which usually is not
an all out attack. Other breeds of dogs are prone to attacking. This
doesnt mean that every dog of a particular breed will be vicious or not
vicious as the case may be. I have seen nice pit bulls and mean pugs and
yet, I dont freak out when I see someone walking in the park with a pug
off leash.
