Does anyone know what has become of the Time of Day service?

A few days ago, it answered the phone, but with silence.

For the last couple of days, it's just a busy signal.

I've had exactly the same problem. Yesterday, the silence seemed to be like
an open phone line. I could hear conversations, but faintly. Now, just a
busy signal.

I get a little cheesed when I call information and get a busy signal...

Maybe time is irrelevant now. =)

I've wanted time also. Before today's busy signals, yesterday
I got 'All carrier lines are busy'.

        What's up with that?

re #5: I'd be disappointed, too.. Assuming her answer was even
correct, she still should have said "121" and offered to dial it
  for you..

<laughs>

It reminds me of the time Shaun and I were in Chicago at the top of the
Hancock Building. While waiting for the elevator to reach us (95th floor),
the guide was rattling off a few trivial things. She asked if we had any
questions, and Shaun piped up, "Yeah...what's the atomic weight of Carbon?"
As I kicked his shin ever so slightly, she gave the correct answer without
losing her smile or demeanor. She rocked. =)

#5, #8> Pranks that don't get a reaction are so boring. I paid for pizza for
six with silver dollars. Little stacks of them. No reaction from the driver.

Carbon has an atomic weight?

mcnally - who says "Information" is only allowed to give out phone numbers?
 :)

I'm kinda bummed about the time service being gone. I've never found a
similar service in other areas. Not in Kalamazoo, nor here in North Carolina.

I have, on occasion, been known to dial long distance to get time from "The
Time Lady" in Ann Arbor.

Tod - I forget the exact element he asked about...

Brighn - we're used to getting handfuls of change, so of course he didn't
react.  =)

The atomic number of carbon is 12, IIRC. The atomic weight would depend on
the isotope.

Okay, then I meant number. =) (This trip was a while ago)

#15> I was a pizza boy for three years, so I know about change. But it was
rarely more than a few bucks worth... this was about $50 in silver dollars.

You can reach the Ypsilanti time lady at 734-485-1212.

I've found that 665-1212 has been unusually wonky lately, too.
But if you try calling again a few times, it seems to work.

I think there's a time service in my local Oakland, California, phone book.
I can post the number later if anybody really wants it. I haven't tried
calling it.

According to the Ann Arbor News, the local telephone Time Lady is retiring,
and they're having trouble finding a suitable replacement. Automation is
being discussed, but it's being very strongly objected to by the union.

Are they going to have auditions to replace the Time Lady? If so, would
they open it up to both sexes? That would be a cool gig :)
