The Origin of Dogs and Cats Mark Unseen   Sep 28 07:20 UTC 2000

ORIGIN OF DOGS AND CATS
A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the
answer to "Where do pets come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked
with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome
here and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will
be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you,so
that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how
selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will
accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And
it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was
pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the
Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem. Because I have created this new animal to
be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my
own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved
them. And they were comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content
and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said,
"Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and
preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration.
Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well."

And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who
will be with them forever and who will see them as they are. The
companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that
they are not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be acompanion to Adam and Eve. And Cat
would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they
were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility. And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was happy.

And Cat didn't give a hoot one way or the other.

You forgot to mention the cat piss smell on the tree of knowledge.
Oh..and the chewed up slipper in the land of Nod.

Dogs are pack animals with an 'alpha male' type of structure where the
humans simply became the 'alpha male' in the domestication process
(similar with horses). Thus the dog greets you in a subservient manner
when you return home - "oh yes, you are top dog sir, yes indeed, i
grovel to your topdogness".

Cats on the other hand were "domesti'cat'ed" (to the extent that they
are) at the point in civilization when humans started storing grain and
living together in large numbers (much later). A cat's natural prey are
the smaller rodents which thrive in the close and fixed sites and thus
they were originally attracted to the 'good eating' provided by the
human cities. Those humans that were clever enough stopped eating the
cats and indeed would feed them to keep them around as the mere smell of
cats kept the rodents away. The cats themselves decided it was a pretty
good gig and stuck around but never regarded the humans as anything
other than useful means to an end and certianly do not regard humans as
superiors - they never saw a human catch a nice fat mouse and give it to
a cat...

I doubt cats were ever a big part of the human diet, domesticated or
not.

Cats can be a lot of fun. One of my favorite things to have happen is to
visit someone and have them find the "hates-everybody" cat curled up next
to or even on me. The stunned looks are priceless. (Cat psychology, fun
stuff.)

Re#6: I take it that Sasha is extremely hostile?

It doesn't always work, but I often can get surly cats to be sociable.
The ones that are scared witless of strangers are the real hard ones,
it's tough to make friends with a cat you can't see.

My personal favorite cat story: My family used to vacation in Lake City,
MI. We stayed in some cabins, and the owners cats would drop in for
visits. Morris (named because he looked it) would sleep on the chouch
with my father.

One day, in the middle of the week we were staying there, Grace, the cabin
owners other cat, came by and was yowling at us. We knew she wanted us to
follow her, we've had enough cats to learn that one, and we realized she
was looking mighty thin for a cat that had been hugely pregnant the
previous day. Wee followed her, and she lead us to the supply shack, and
straight to a box of toilet paper rolls. Yes, she had nested in the box,
and her kittens had fallen down the holes. We quickly ripped apart the
box, rescued the kittens, who all lived BTW, and went and explained the
situation to the owners. It seems that Grace had tried to alert them, but
they didn't understand that she wanted them to follow her, so she went to
the other 'cat people' she knew to be on the premises. Needless to say,
they were vary glad we'd figured it out

Sasha isn't hostile...she's just picky. And expects you to bow to her. And
is moody. And fairly antisocial unless you have food.

At least you don't have problems fighting cats away from steak, Scott's
favorite people food.

Yeah... Sasha's not much for people-food. She's not entirely anti-
social, but then again, Sarah's used to her two slut-cats. <grins> She
just takes awhile to warm up to people, and is rather 'Queen'-like.

October growls and hisses and anyone besides I or my parents who attempt
physical contact with her. Although she is better than she use to be. Shelby,
on the other hand, is just too spastic and dumb to care. =P Of course she's
ALSO only 3 months old.

She aint got brains yet at 3 months! Then again, that means only about 12
brain cells in cats.

I am still waiting to hear Scott hiss... hasn't happened yet. He is at the
stage of thinking that meowing would make me weak from the cuteness of it.

Precious hissed 4 times in 3 years before I got Tanis. She now only hisses
at him. He's huge, has all his brain cells in his tail, and at 8 months, is
still uncordinated. So my widdle girl can still whip his ass. She's
talented.

I wish Mittens were more of a people cat than a hiding under the bed cat. She
prefers going about her business without ANY human intervention at all...
though she does occasionally deign to snuggle me, maybe once a month...

Shelby and 'Tober probably won't even meet eachother in their lifetimes. =P

response 19 of 43: Mark Unseen   Oct 11 13:38 UTC 2000

When we have people over Sasha is generally in my room, avoiding the
annoyance, or under the table glaring at everyone for invading her
space. <grins> Although, she does occasionally deign to come out and
sniff people, and maybe accept a pet or two.

When it's just Sasha and me, she can be really snuggly and man does she
purr loudly!

hmm...and which side of the family is that from? My cats don't care either
way, actually Tanis hated it. He likes the smell of Downy fabric softner.
