Isn't ISIS an operating system that ran on intel development hardware,
like the MCS-80 and MCS-85?

ISIS is also the name of the automated registration system in use
at Eastern Michigan University.

I thought Isis was a goddess in Egyptian lore...

This is true. Isis was the goddess of love, sexuality, ceremonies,
health and healing, and immortality.

People seem to like to name computer-related things after ancient
creatures of legend. Other examples are Kerberos (originally a
three-headed canine who guarded the entrance to hell, now a
protocol for secure transmission of information) and Cobol
(originally the Phonecian god of markets and currency, now a
business-oriented computer language).

Hmmmm. I never knew that about Cobol.

Actually, it stands for COmmon Business Orientented Language...but like most
other things, I suppsoe they decided to make the acroim stand for
something...CBOL is a little much. On the Mid-Range systems, RPG (a form of
abbreviated cobol) stands for Report program Generator.

Can I get a source for the allegation that Cobol was a God? I've never heard
that, and a casual search on the Web (including
http://www.cybercomm.net/~grandpa/mideast.html, which looks reliable and
fairly comprehensive) turns up nothing.

response 15 of 19: Mark Unseen   Nov 14 19:30 UTC 2000

(role... not roll.. role as in the character you play, not roll as in
roll the dice... though some people confuse that concepts <thinks of a
few online players she knows>)
ashke
