I really hate all the boy bands. The way they shoot their videos is also
boring with extreme face closeups and every hair combed.

I am a big fan of aerosmith and rock music in general ...The heading was for
another thread which meant the band i liked the most ... and that is
aerosmith. I think it is the one band which has stood the test of time. They
have changed their music over the years, unlike other bands which have
vanished into wilderness.

Define serious and define rock. I listen to music. I have almost 2500 mp3
files on my computer, a sizeable cd/tape/record collection...so yes, I would
think so. However, I can't do it early in the morning. I need something
poppy if I am going to get my butt out of bed. And wake up. And stay that
way.

VH-1 did the top one-hundred rock bands spread out over last week. It was
absolutely fun to watch, as you got to see a lot of bands who rarely get play
on VH-1 or M-TV. Aerosmith I believe was in the top 10 and you cannot deny
that they are probably the greatest American rock band. Gary and I do this
thing all the time where we name the best American/English rock bands and when
you come right down to it, most really great rock comes from the UK. But our
top 5 American are Aerosmith, the Doors, Soundgarden, Metallica and Nirvana.

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and CCR would replace two on
your list to come closer to my list.

U2?

Soundgarden seems like an out of place selection for that list...

AC/DC?

Elton John?

The Cure? (yuck)

umm, Beatles?

Rolling Stones?

Bob Dylan?

Hell, how about the Grateful Dead?

What are the criteria, anyway? Surely longevity is a factor, because if they
really have no impact or influence, they don't last long...

Well, whether they deserve the honors or not, Soundgarden isn't as nearly
out of place as U2, Elton John, the Beatles, the Stones, etc. would be,
given that #10 says this is a list of top 5 *American* rock bands.

I actually need to amend the statement - Jimi Hendrix (and the Jimi Hendrix
Experience) should be in the list. Probably the top 5 rock bands (for me)
would be The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Jimi Hendrix and the Doors. I
do like the Stones, but I don't think they did anything oh-so revolutionary.

speaking of revolution: turns out that paul mccartney is the richest rocker
on the planet. worth over 550 million. the next richest has about half of
that.

elton john was second. mick jagger 3rd. no figures given for those two.

Elton Sings Sad Song in Court
by Josh Grossberg
Nov 16, 2000, 12:15 PM PT

The Rocket Man is apparently a space cadet when it comes to money.

Elton John has taken the stand in a London court this week to defend his
spendthrift ways and accuse his financial handlers of cooking his books.

The flamboyant popster is suing his former manager, Andrew Haydon, and
accountant, the multinational bean-counting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, for
misappropriating his multimillion-dollar fortune and putting him on the brink
of bankruptcy. (John earlier reached a $5 million out-of-court settlement with
another defendant, his former manager and lover, John Reid.)

Although he's the one suing, John on Wednesday found himself trying to explain
outrageous spending binges and shopping sprees that substantially shrunk his
bank account.

"I'm not a nest-egg person," the 53-year-old singer testified, when questioned
by defense lawyers about his wallet woes. "I have no one to leave the money
to. I'm a single man. I like spending my money."

And how. He admitted running up debts in excess of $2 million a month, despite
financial advisers warning him to slow down. He said he forked over $50
million in personal items over a 20-month period between 1996 and 1997,
including--we're not kidding here--a whopping $205,774 on flowers alone.

In addition to the pricey petals, Elton has bought multimillion-dollar spreads
in London, Windsor, England and Atlanta, along with a villa in Nice, not to
mention classic cars, designer duds, jewels and thousands of CDs.

John's admission came after defense lawyers tried to paint him as a man with
little or no understanding of business affairs and who was very careless with
his wealth. After an attorney for Haydon alleged John's outrageous buying
habits made it difficult, if not impossible, for his client to reign the
singer in, John fired back.

"That is what they were getting paid for. They were managing me. It's not
always a bed of roses," he added. (No word on how much that bed of roses
cost.)

On Thursday, however, the "Sad Songs" singer continued to go on the offensive,
saying that since he's dropped PricewaterhouseCooper, "I'm earning more money
now than I've ever earned in my life.

"The whole point of this case is, I think, there has been a misappropriation,
and people haven't done their job properly," he added.

As for Haydon, he allowed Elton to be billed for items he never purchased,
according to the singer.

Elton's testimony is expected to wrap up Friday. The amount he's seeking has
not been disclosed, but if past money woes are any indication, it could be
in the tens of millions. Last year, Elton, the second bestselling solo artist
of all time, had to request an emergency $40 million loan from a London
financial house to help cover his debts and stay solvent.

Financially, I wonder where Michael Jackson is now. At one point he
was in a huge lead for personal wealth. One can argue that both
EJ and MJ are insane spendthrifts, yet even EJ remains on the chart,
while MJ is out of sight.
