About passwords:

Passwords are stored using the standard UNIX encryption algorithm, so they are fairly secure. Even if someone got ahold of the password file somehow, the only way he or she could figure out your plaintext password is with some kind of brute force approach, like trying every word in the dictionary. (That's possible to do, which is why it's a good idea not to use a real word as a password.) Even I can't recreate your password from what's stored on the disk.
