This item is for system problems. If something on Grex isn't working right (weird behavior from a program, etc.), this is the place to announce it. Except for security holes. If you find a hole in system security, mail information about it directly to "staff".16 responses total.
This operating system doesn't work right. It has a bug which causes it to lock up. Hopefully we can get it replaced soon so we don't have to deal with any more downtime. Not having to reboot it would be nice, and would help staff not have to babysit the system so much.
How often are reboots required?
Usually about once a month, but in June we've rebooted twice already.
> OpenSSH_5.9, OpenSSL 1.0.0a 1 Jun 2010 That's ancient. Just saying.
You're preaching to the choir, I'm afraid.
I'm unaware of Grex's internal politics. I remember mentions of wanting to move to FreeBSD. That would make upgrades almost painless. I have no idea how OpenBSD works. Also no idea if there's enough motivation for admins to bother with moving.
It's not really motivation. It's more about time.
I see. Well, nothing critical is happening on Grex so I guess there isn't much pressure either. Thanks.
"nothing critical is happening on Grex" ! LOL
resp:6 @bellstar: "I have no idea how OpenBSD works." There is 6 monthly release cycle, so we have now OpenBSD 5.8, the update is done step by step from Release to New Release 5.0 [grex] -> 5.1 - >... -> 5.8 -> ... etc. You can't do big leap from 5.0 to 5.8. And that is related to GENERIC kernel without any special 'improvements' in internals. So according to my little knowledge about grex history [and Ann Arbor], FreeBSD [as particular version] is great solution in long term maintenance perspective.
Re #10: Thanks for the explanation. Methinks FreeBSD is nice, too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Re #9: Are critical things happening on Grex? Tell me.
resp:11 Nope. I think walkman's response was vigorous agreement.
Heh. Okay.
#13 sarcasm on #9 (meaning: nothing is critical/are you kidding?) Then again, "critical" might be relevant.
relative! ha
FreeBSD is where its at! It's my favorite. It's rock solid and it works great and its easy to use.
You have several choices:
