I missed the first one, and sorry I did. I'd certainly enjoy attending a
second one. I'd like to participate, too, somehow, but I'm not sure how my
skill set translates into something I could present at a recital.

#6 of 63 by orinoco on Thu Apr 6 17:53:52 2000:

I would love to participate, if the recital took place over the summer or on
a weekend during which I could make it back to Ann Arbor. This sounds like
a great idea.

#7 of 63 by otter on Thu Apr 6 17:58:18 2000:

Depending on schedules, I would be happy to perform.

#8 of 63 by janc on Fri Apr 7 04:41:09 2000:

I'd love to attend. Not perform though - I can sing a baby to sleep
sometimes, but I think he falls asleep mainly so he won't have to keep
listening to me.

#9 of 63 by polygon on Sun Apr 9 02:35:29 2000:

I second Jan's thoughts in every detail, except that the baby is a she,
and I know that she loves hearing my terrible singing.

#10 of 63 by other on Sun Apr 9 07:04:32 2000:

I could provide some financial and technical support....

#11 of 63 by mary on Sun Apr 9 12:54:21 2000:

Thanks, other and others. ;-)

I'm going to mail katie and arabella and coyote to see if
they would be interested, but you know they are in a different
league when you even hesitate to ask for fear you'll insult them. ;-)

Too, I'm a real softie for kids performing so if any Grexers have
youngsters who could bring a talent to a general recital they'd
be more than welcome to join in.

And so far I don't think we've attracted any poets. John mentioned
having this linked to poetry. I'll ask.

#12 of 63 by scott on Sun Apr 9 13:54:34 2000:

Hey Eric (other)... you might also suggest a venue. The church room Mary got
last time was good, but the carpet muffled the sound a bit (other than that
it was about perfect in size)

#13 of 63 by otter on Sun Apr 9 16:32:23 2000:

My offer to perform involves poetry and NO singing.
Want a room cleared? Have me come in singing.

#14 of 63 by remmers on Sun Apr 9 17:36:32 2000:

(We'll schedule your singing act for last... ;-)

#15 of 63 by hhsrat on Sun Apr 9 23:19:56 2000:

If you want to have a crew of all Eric's, then I'll volunteer to help
Eric B if needed.

#16 of 63 by janc on Mon Apr 10 01:13:49 2000:

Maybe the final act should consist of all us non-singing Grexer's doing
a few choruses to a song none of us know the words to. That should
clear the room.

#20 of 63 by jules on Mon Apr 10 03:39:09 2000:

what is with all the damn eric/eriks around here?

#21 of 63 by gelinas on Mon Apr 10 04:09:53 2000:

They were on special, so we bought a large lot to save money.

#22 of 63 by jules on Mon Apr 10 13:50:29 2000:

hey, would ya let me know next time they run a special like that on boys?

#23 of 63 by arianna on Mon Apr 10 14:10:17 2000:

yeah, I agree, no singing -- nobody would wanna hear me or arabella sing
anyway. d=

#24 of 63 by brighn on Mon Apr 10 14:47:14 2000:

Interested in doing something. Story-telling, and poems if no other poets show
up (don't wanna take up too many slots).

#25 of 63 by diznave on Mon Apr 10 14:53:10 2000:

It's times like this when I regret being way down in Florida.

#26 of 63 by remmers on Mon Apr 10 17:12:48 2000:

Re resp:23 - Heh. I'd love to hear arianna sing; hear she's quite
good. (I know first-hand that arabella is...) Physical distance
from Ann Arbor might be a handicap, though.

#27 of 63 by orinoco on Mon Apr 10 17:14:50 2000:

It'll just test her lung capacity a little....

#28 of 63 by scott on Mon Apr 10 20:08:34 2000:

She could phone it in... Friday at the dojo banquet the keynote speaker missed
his flight, so one of the instructors held his cell phone up to the mic, and
we still got a nice speech.

#29 of 63 by lumen on Mon Apr 10 22:42:00 2000:

resp:23 resp:28 I haven't heard either sing, unfortunately, and I
didn't even know Erinn sang. I've been known to sing, since I am
studying as a baritone/bass, but I am also stuck here in Central WA and
cannot quite afford a trip to A2 again.

*sigh* This sounded nice, but I guess it's better not to toot my own
horn. I usually sing and play my classical guitar for my own enjoyment
anyway.

#30 of 63 by scott on Mon Apr 10 23:05:43 2000:

Perhaps you could mail/email a recording?

#31 of 63 by jules on Tue Apr 11 01:06:32 2000:

i havent been doing my music for awhile, but i might consider at least
attending, if not participating in something liek this. but only if i can
change my name to eric or erik

#32 of 63 by gelinas on Tue Apr 11 01:58:38 2000:

Change it to "Ericka" and don't pronounce the /a/.

#33 of 63 by aruba on Tue Apr 11 02:26:49 2000:

Maybe someone could set up a Real Audio connection so Lumen could play for
the recital even though he was in Washington.

#34 of 63 by diznave on Tue Apr 11 05:43:06 2000:

well, if you could set that up, i would be willing to play recorder (soprano,
alto & tenor) from FL

#35 of 63 by arianna on Tue Apr 11 17:21:51 2000:

re #24: me thinks John chides me for leaving a2. [: How about if we all call
in on a donated cell phone. <g>
re #26: if we get the poetry chapbook finished in time for the performance,
it might be interesting to have a few of the attending poetry cf'ers read from
it.
re #27: smart ass.
re #28: surprising, lumen, that you've forgotten -- we've have a couple of
conversations about music, one was even in person when we were both in a2
last. Gettin a mite rusty upstairs, ol' man? d=

#36 of 63 by lumen on Wed Apr 12 22:47:54 2000:

resp:35 Rusty? No, maybe scatterbrained-- I have SO much to think
about in one day, really, and it was a small chunk of data that somehow
got forgotten. Really, Erinn, when I was in A2, I was talking music
with a lot of people, so I may have forgotten a few things. *sigh*
That reminds me, one day I'll get "Ann Arbor Rag" finished-- at least
to a degree-- that John could play. I feel bad that I have shelved the
manuscript for so long since my music dictation is terrible (we can't
transmit the data by MIDI from a Diskclavier).

I do miss you all terribly and do wish that I could be there in person.

resp:30 I can, although you'd have to listen to all the rest of my
classmates in the guitar ensemble. I don't have great recording
equipment of my own, but if I can figure something out, I will try to
pick my best guitar tune and my best vocal piece.

#37 of 63 by gracel on Tue Apr 25 17:20:13 2000:

I asked Jonathan whether he would like to sing a duet with me in such a
recital, and he said No, but indicated that he would like to play the piano.
(He's 13 now) If the date doesn't conflict with our *full* summer schedule,
probably each boy would like to make an appearance as pianist.

#38 of 63 by mary on Wed Apr 26 00:01:43 2000:

Very nice.

I've done a little calling around to try to find a suitable
space. I'm placing some follow-up calls tomorrow. A space
that is priced right and comes with a piano seems to be
the sticky point.

I apologize ahead of time for not being able to post lots
of dates here and have a debate about which one works best
but by the time we decide the space would, no doubt, be booked.

So I'm probably going to just go with an open Saturday or Sunday
afternoon, in June, if I can get such a date. If you are planning to
perform and know there is a day in there you can't make, please let me
know in mail ASAP. Thanks.

#39 of 63 by arabella on Wed Apr 26 03:35:49 2000:

Mary, havwe you tried Northside Community Church? They do
lots of recitals there, and only ask for a $50 contribution
(which I would be willing to help out with).

#40 of 63 by mary on Wed Apr 26 12:19:33 2000:

Nope, didn't know about Northside. I'll call them too.
Thanks, Leslie.

I am looking into First Presbyterian Church (where we had
it last time), Kerrytown Concert House, and Green Wood Coffee
House (where Katie has concerts).

#41 of 63 by mary on Fri Apr 28 02:52:21 2000:

We'll here is where it's at. Dates are tight. It looks like
either Saturday, June 24th, or sometime in very late July or
in August. On June 24th we lose a couple of people who
aren't available, which leave only about five or six
people who have stated an interest in performing. I'm not
sure that's enough interest, actually.

Do we go for something later in the summer and hope to round-up
more interest? Take the June 24th date and just have it be
a smaller deal? Whatchathink?

#42 of 63 by mary on Sat Apr 29 19:22:05 2000:

I've gone through and counted up the volunteers.

Aruba, scott, remmers, orinoco, otter, davel & family, jules, arabella and
katie have all said they'd be interested. But so far only aruba and
remmers have confirmed they can make June 24th. I know arabella and davel
& family can't make it that date. So I'm going to call and release the
reservation.

I'll ask about dates in August.

#43 of 63 by scott on Sat Apr 29 21:32:35 2000:

The 24th of June is fine by me. I thought Mary only wanted to hear from
people who *couldn't* make that date. ?

#44 of 63 by otter on Sat Apr 29 23:27:23 2000:

Yeah, me too. It was fine with me.
But so is anything after the first weekend in August.
Mary, I will send you the e-mail address I check daily...

#45 of 63 by jules on Sat Apr 29 23:36:40 2000:

june 24 is bad for me, cause im gonna be probably catering to all of the
musicians who perform at the frog island jazz festival, which is that weekend.

#46 of 63 by other on Sun Apr 30 04:04:15 2000:

I'll be working at TOP on 24 June

#47 of 63 by orinoco on Sun Apr 30 05:33:09 2000:

I think I'll just have gotten back to Ann Arbor on june 24th.

#48 of 63 by arabella on Sun Apr 30 08:26:29 2000:

I don't expect to be back in Ann Arbor until about August 23.
I would really like to participate in the grex recital, so
a date at the end of August or beginning of September would
work best for me.

#49 of 63 by glenda on Sun Apr 30 12:00:07 2000:

I mentioned this to Staci (she plays violin and mandolin) she said she might
be interested, especially if she can convince Damon to play his trumpet in
a duet with her.

#50 of 63 by scott on Sun Apr 30 12:59:34 2000:

Ooh, right, TOP. But we're talking afternoon, so that is still OK for people
who aren't actually working TOP.

#51 of 63 by mary on Mon May 1 02:09:17 2000:

I know it's almost four months away but how would the afternoon of
Saturday, August 26th, work for folks? That date is available.

#52 of 63 by aruba on Mon May 1 22:48:35 2000:

I'll be gone from about August 10th through Labor Day.

#53 of 63 by mary on Mon May 1 23:38:37 2000:

Ack, I think you told me that in email once already, Mark. Sorry.

I don't think this is going to come off this summer. People have full
lives and lots going on. I know I only have two Saturdays free in the
next 3 months, and I'm not unusual. And trying to get at least 10 people
to be able to perform on either of those dates would be tricky.

How about we come back to this in a few months, maybe planning a recital
sometime in the fall?

#54 of 63 by eeyore on Tue May 2 11:28:20 2000:

Out of blatent curiousity, why does it have to be on a Saturday?

#55 of 63 by mary on Tue May 2 23:09:33 2000:

Tradition. ;-)

The church has that space booked on Sunday's. Would there
be more people willing to make a weekday evening recital?
I rather thought not but I could be wrong.

#56 of 63 by orinoco on Tue May 2 23:13:09 2000:

The Kerrytown Concert House might be possible on Sundays

#57 of 63 by mary on Tue May 2 23:31:55 2000:

Yep, but they are a bit pricey. As is the Unitarian Church who
wanted $200 for a small chapel that seats, maybe, 30 comfortably.
The space we rented last time around is not available due to
an extensive renovation project just getting underway. Greenwood
Coffee house doesn't have a piano and won't rent to non-members.

#58 of 63 by aruba on Wed May 3 02:43:35 2000:

I could do a weekday evening, I guess.

#59 of 63 by katie on Wed May 3 05:09:47 2000:

Mary, who did you talk to about Green Wood? Green Wood has 2 pianos (one
electric, one upright) and does rent to nonmembers. 'Sides which, I am a
member. I am majorly puzzled.

#60 of 63 by mary on Wed May 3 12:22:51 2000:

I spoke with the woman who said Rev. Eardly wasn't there but
asked if she could help. She was nice enough but did say there
wasn't a working piano and that they really didn't rent out the
space to the public. I did mention you would be involved in
the recital.

Did I give up on this, for this summer, too soon? I'm certainly
interested in seeing a recital happen but I'm not into pulling
teeth to get folks to commit. There were enough performers expressing
interest in general but not when specific dates were mentioned.
Would a weeknight evening work, especially a Friday? What happened
to our poets? Maybe somebody got wind of the fact I was going
to be playing the cello? ;-)

#61 of 63 by katie on Wed May 3 13:21:12 2000:

Must have been an office volunteer who misunderstood. I'll check on it.

#62 of 63 by orinoco on Wed May 3 14:53:18 2000:

I'm pretty sure a Friday evening would work.

#63 of 63 by otter on Sun May 7 01:31:40 2000:

Can do a Friday evening.
Will even use a bit of PT to leave work early.
Let me know.
