I'm carrying over the most recent posts on suggestions for new conferences. #133 of 142: by Robertr Gold (use) on Sat, Apr 7, 2001 (14:16): I would like to propose setting up a new conference for the purpose of discussing the problems present when using email for advocacy with elected officials specifically the problem of the emails being ignored and thereby jeopardizing the success of an advocacy campaign. There has been some media coverage about this recently. There are also some reports and surveys on this by the Congress Online Project and OMBWATCH.(I will provide the URLs in future posts or will give it to anyone requesting it by email.) I am new to GREX and am not sure I will ultimately decide I wan't it here because I find the Conferencing system a bit confusing, and I would like to invite alot of people who are new to GREX to come here and participate, and they might also find the system to be too confusing. #134 of 142: by Joe (gelinas) on Sat, Apr 7, 2001 (15:21): This subject needs a conference? Start an item in agora and see what happens. #135 of 142: by Robertr Gold (use) on Sat, Apr 7, 2001 (21:21): Joe. I would like to have people from outside of GREX also use the conference, and they will have trouble finding the info in Agora. #136 of 142: by Joe (gelinas) on Sat, Apr 7, 2001 (21:53): I disagree, but that is no argument against starting a conference. #137 of 142: by E R Bassey (other) on Sun, Apr 8, 2001 (02:25): Posting an item in Agora and seeing what kind of response it generates is a good way to gauge whether there is sufficient interest in the topic to support a new conference. #138 of 142: by Robertr Gold (use) on Sun, Apr 8, 2001 (07:22): Even if there is not a big interest shown in Agora, I would still want to start it, because I would publicize it on many places outside of GREX and bring in participants to the conference. Also, in response to a previous question about wether there is a need for a seperate conference for this, I have thought about the possibility of starting it out as a seperate conference and later on moving it into another broader category conference like the politics conference or broadening the scope of the conference and renaming it. #139 of 142: by Scott Helmke (scott) on Sun, Apr 8, 2001 (08:50): I don't see any problem with starting a conference for this. It may end up dying a lonely death, but that's no reason not to try it in the first place. #140 of 142: by C. S. McGee (cmcgee) on Sun, Apr 8, 2001 (09:08): Heh, Some of us FWs have conferences that are severely inactive, not dead. I just KNOW that the Food Coop people would flock here if I only had a separate conference for them ;-) #141 of 142: by C. Keesan (keesan) on Sun, Apr 8, 2001 (13:01): I tried out a translators' conference as an item in the language conference. It lived for a few days. #142 of 142: by Robertr Gold (use) on Mon, Apr 16, 2001 (14:52): Regarding my request for a conference about 'email advocacy': I am not yet ready to make a final decision yet to start it,and need some time to sort some things out related to this. I am not sure how much time I need to decide, but will try to post again about this as soon as possible.
I would like to propose a "Network" conference, for detailed discussion of computer networking issues. This came up in a party chat today, where a user who is trying to have a DSL line installed had some question about whether his installer was feeding him bull*bleep* or not. In e-mail, Steve Andre asked if this might not go in the Jellyware conference; my feeling is that jellyware is pretty well defined as a conference for Unix issues, and most networking topics are user-machine-platform independent. I would volunteer to FW.
Would the internet conference serve your needs?
Maybe if it was given a restart and an extra alias, since I didn't even think of trying "bbs internet" yesterday. And some new fairwitnesses, since only one of the three still has any presence on the system, far as I can tell. There only seems to be one serious item entered in 2001.
Item 1 in the Internet conference (from 1994) suggests to me even more that the Internet conference has become mostly of historical interest; the conference was originally intended for talking about all the neat things users could do with the newfangled Internet connection that Grex had, or for the connections which were becoming common in homes. So, my proposal is: restart the Internet conference, add "network" as a synonym name, retain kaplan as fw and add me, and refocus the discussion towards "making it work" issues as opposed to "here's this neat thing a user can do."
And, in item:internet,137 (Internet conference, item 137) from back in 1998, where the subject title is "Is this conference dead?", several people say the conference has already turned into a useful historical archive. So let's roll it out as an archive conference "internet1" and get something current installed.
Good plan.
I have entered a summary of my propsal as item:internet,156 and I have mailed a copy of it to kaplan and ecy, the two fairwitnesses of that conference who still have accounts. (I know kaplan is still active, I see him regularly on Grexwalks.)
Yup, I'm here. I approve of your plan, Ken. Is it withing the power of a FW to make other people FWs and to turn an existing converence into an archive? Other than waiting for more public discussion, what am I expected to do here?
Yeah, you can ask cfadm to do all that. Without requiring any public discussion.
Since this is fw-changes & rolling of an existing cf, nothing is needed here. I prefer to see public discussion (& approval) of fw-change and rolling decisions in the cf in question, but you've already got that ball in motion. E-mail me from your grex account when you figure that it's time to fire up the forge.
Ditto here my "thumbs up" expressed in the internet conference.
Morning everyone! I had come up with this idea, and didn't find anything similar to it already in existence no Grex, so I'm gonna toss it out and see what happens.I've been hard pressed lately to find a decent (free) chess-related club/list/conference online where people can get together and organize email/snail mail games, form local groups, make friends, etc... So I'd like to create a Chess conference. Anyone think this is a good idea? Any suggestions on it?
I'll rain on your parade a little, then give you some encouragement. There's not enough of a chess-playing crowd here to generate a lot of discussion. I don't recall seeing any chess-playing items on Grex, ever. If there are chess enthusiasts, they don't use Grex much to discuss it. You might just try to gather together interested people in the games conference. However, depending on what you have in mind for the conference, it could still be a very good conference. Do you envision different items with chess games taking place in them between two people, but which others can watch and follow along with? Do you envision discussions on different types of openings, different defenses, how Spassky lost to Fischer in 1972 and what he should have done differently? If you start a chess conference, I will at least check it out. I'm no chess expert, I haven't played in years and never studied the game, but I used to like to play. Is Jan's chess by e-mail program installed here on Grex? That was an interesting way to play the game...
Likewise, I think this is a neat idea. I'd suggest that you can help its chances of taking off by sending mail to your chess-playing friends, posting notes in Agora and the games conference, and things like that.
My original vision for this conf was to provide a place for two enthusiasts to meet and coordinate games. I do, however, like the ideas proposed above (ie: Discussion of strategy, providing games for public viewing). I think it could also be a learning opportunity, where people could post questions on basic chess strategy (kind of like a jellyware for chess). I'm sure there are individuals on here who would love to learn to play, but have no one to teach them or to practice with. Though I haven't been here long enough to become friends with many of the other users, I'll definitely put some posts up in Agora and the games conference. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, and I look forward to hearing any other opinions on this. Patrick
We'd certainly welcome new people for a chess conference, Patrick.
How about starting a chess item in Agora, and seeing how many active Grexers jump in? It would certainly give you a feel for how many new people you would have to attract to Grex to make it work.
Could that in general be a rule of thumb? Testing out the proposed conference by adding an item in agora if folks are unsure of how much interest it would generate?
I really don't see why people are being so stingy about starting a new conference. We could certainly use some new blood on Grex.
That's true. In any case, the responses people post here should be taken as suggestions to the proposer, which he's free to accept or reject. Our policy is that anybody can have a conference if they want it, after allowing a few days' for user input in this item. After five days of discussion here, if Patrick still wants the conference, he can have it. Or if he'd feel more comfortable with a trial item in some other conference (perhaps Agora, or Games would also be suitable for this proposal), that's fine too. The only restriction on conferences is that they must be "open", i.e. accessible to all users. This was decided by member vote a few years ago. And if Patrick can attract new users to Grex with a Chess conference, that would be great.
the only folks "flock to grex" are haqueers/twits that feel like spamming the world, grex, or whatefver & bot-twits
I'd be interrested in a chess item/conf. I've been playing with itsyourturn.com again lately.
I vote yes.
I vote yes.
i was wondering about an EBAY related conference, i know i and several others on here use ebay, it could be used for questions, notices, facts and more. i would love to finally run a conference here on grex. i would like to be the FW for it also.
Try it out first as an agora item to see if there is any interest.
We have a classified ads conference already. I might use an eBay conference to pick up tips on how to use eBay, if the conference were active enough. I have a suggestion, though; why not enter an item in agora to see how much activity it gets? If it's flooded with great discussion, then a conference might be warranted. If it gets a dozen responses in a month, then a conference probably wouldn't be worth starting. (Sindi slipped in.)
ok. thats fair.
well i created an agora item (#134) for ebay, its been there maby 3 or so days and is doing well. so we shall see if it keeps interest. i think it will.
What types of items would you start? How to package things, how to bid....?
Sounds about right. After next week, I'll email cfadm about it, but I'm absolutely swamped until then....
Are there any guides on how to be a good shill? I've never been clear on how to go about it properly.
re #33 Yea, there's actually a website with a fee that has it automated for you and you just punch in the ending of the auction and the auction number.
Um, are you sure you know the difference between sniping and shilling?
i would create seperate 'threads' for: bidding tips / buying tips selling / mailing questions and answers general chat related to ebay notices of items that are being sold / won and whatever else it needed with time
re #35 You're talking about selling, right?
I'm talking about shilling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shill
Thanks, I know what a shill is. Its part of Yiddish 101. I think you got lost with the fact that I pointed out there are services offered via others who advertise on websites.
Um, OK, what exactly do these services do?
re #40 In layman's terms: wire fraud
TROGG IS DAVID BLAINE
re #42 wow, this crap is in here too? so what else do i have to do to earn my conference?
If you still think it's a good idea, send a message to cfadm asking that it be created.
ok, thanks!
Any progress on getting the "agorage" conference opened up?
Negative. Give me until Friday; that's my last final of the summer.
DON"TY FEEL BAD CROSS I STILL HAVEN"T OPPENED UP THE POLYTARP CONFERENCE SND THAT WAS CREATED *YEARS* AGO
