Item 383: Why are e-mails bouncing?

Entered by trh on Wed Dec 6 20:06:11 2006:

I saw the following type of mesage for several incoming e-mails a few
minutes ago:

From confirm-return-trh=grex.cyberspace.org@returns.groups.yahoo.com Wed
Dec 06
14:49:12 2006
Subject: Please confirm your request to join taac-sf
  Folder: **Bounced**
   2295

Is there something wrong with the e-mail system?

Thanks,

Ahmet Toprak

Looks like someone is trying to sign you up for Turk of America, San Francisco
Yahoo group?

Oh, that was probably your intent, duh. :) I think incoming mail is not
enabled for non-members.

Re #2: No, incoming mail is enabled for non-members, even those who joined
after January 11 and thus do not have outgoing mail access.

Isn't inbound without outbound pretty worthless?

Ahmet: the immediate answer to your question is that yesterday,
when the mail sent to you bounced, Grex was having problems with
the mail partition being full. Grex had no disk space to receive
incoming mail.

The mail partition keeps filling up because of the large volume
of spam which is being sent to Grex. See item #376 in the
coop conference for the ongoing discussion of how spam is
dragging down Grex's ability to provide a good e-mail service,
and what possible solutions might be.
