Grex Board of Directors Meeting April 18, 2006 - Minutes

Board Members present: Joe Gelinas, John Remmers, Mark Conger, Jan
Wolter, Larry Kestenbaum, Lynne Fremont.

Treasurer s Report:
We took in $248 dollars and paid out $150 in March. So far we have taken
in $150 in April. We had one new member in March (c3067692) and one new
member in April (lapdragon). Welcome!

Mark has been sending out renewal reminders to alternate email addresses
since so many people do not use their grex addresses anymore. This is
time consuming but seems to be working. There may be a way to alias grex
emails and this will be looked into.

Staff Report:
Jeff Kaplan has been added to staff as there have been no objections
from current staff members. He has been added to the access list at
Provide.net

There were a couple of crashes since the last meeting. It could be
process starvation but the cause of the crashes isnt really clear. A
reset solved the issue.

Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be May 23,
2006 at the home of John and Mary Remmers at 7p

PC Weasel:
We may want to consider spending more money for a better piece of
hardware for remote access, i.e. Give up on the PC Weasel altogether. It
is an issue that should be left to staff for now for further
investigation. It would be wise to have a plan for how exactly it will
be used before we buy it. It is possible that the PC Weasel might need
another internet connection. Mark is going to write Steve Gibbard to ask
his advice about this issue.

Conferencing:
It was the opinion of some board members that the quality of
conferencing has gone down. For example there was an item recently that
started out with good content but then ended up with comments from users
about them having sex with the item author s daughter. Grex s
conferences might not be attractive to new people. How can Grex have
conferences that appeal to serious adult conversation? Here are some
rough ideas:
        1. Introduce a second set of conferences with a different set of
rules. 2. Create a new default conference with moderation.
        Abusers could be
excluded. Users could be required to be validated before they can post.
Or we could allow any current users to post but validate any newusers.
Or it could be open to just paying users.
        3. Allow item authors to moderate items.
        4. Make no procedural changes to conferences but use social
        pressure to
encourage thoughtful high quality posts.

Can Grex be different things to different people? Can we keep the old
conferences with no restrictions and have either another set of
conferences or just one conference with different rules? Would it work?
It might need member approval to have a conference like that. It
definately should be discussed. Lynne will enter an item about it.

Meeting adjourned.

what about the item on the morality of x-rays degenerating into people
claiming x-rays don't cause cancer. :(

I'm guessing it was someone talking about md or bru's daughter in jest.
Obviously, we need to tighten up the reigns around here and start censoring
anyone without an Ann Arbor barcode on their forehead.
