Grex Oldcoop Conference

Item 293: yeah baby why don't' you kill me

Entered by scholar on Fri Nov 11 03:50:57 2005:

I have created an item in this very conference that houses copies of about
a dozen threats made against my person, my property, or my family.

How long will Grex's members allow it to be the "Wild West" of the Internet?

When are they going to step up and make it clear that death threats are NOT
welcome here?

I propose that the membership, board, and staff adopt policies to act against
death threats made using Grex.

Seriously.

Why are death threats allowed on Grex, when fun things like Greek Week aren't?

#2 of 28 by scholar on Fri Nov 11 06:17:09 2005:

warlord: twenex you also threatened scholar??
twenex: ...scholar
twenex: on various occasions

warlord: and here i thouhgt i was the only one :)
warlord: i also threatened to slaughter him and his
          family

Freedom of speech, scholar.

#4 of 28 by scholar on Fri Nov 11 22:18:14 2005:

This is already turning into an absurd argument, but, if the definition of
free speech you're talking about predominates over all other maxims we want
to have, and it includes the right to make grievous threats against a person's
self, family, and property, free speech simply isn't something we want to
have.

When will Grex do more to protect its law-abiding users?

#5 of 28 by nharmon on Fri Nov 11 22:21:02 2005:

Scholar, if you believe that a crime has been committed, why don't you
call the RCMP? You are such a bitch sometimes.

#6 of 28 by scholar on Fri Nov 11 22:32:22 2005:

I am not going to call the RCMP because they a) don't have authority in my
jurisdiction and b) they don't have authority in the jurisdictions in which
the crimes were committed.

I don't think I'm being a bitch by thinking Grex ought to offer its users a
system which is as free of death threats as possible, but it doesn't matter
if you think I am.

In fact, it's utterly irrelevant.

However, I thank you for your post. I am now considering contacting the local
police forces of people who have made threats against me.

#7 of 28 by nharmon on Fri Nov 11 22:33:18 2005:

Good for you. Now freeze this item.

#8 of 28 by scholar on Fri Nov 11 22:59:23 2005:

I'll freeze this item if Grex kills the accounts of all people who have
used Grex to threaten another user's life, family, or property.

#10 of 28 by naftee on Sat Nov 12 06:08:34 2005:

i can't believe you missed this one !

twenex: can we legally tie scholar up and drown him?

#11 of 28 by mcnally on Sat Nov 12 07:36:41 2005:

I order for threats to be actionable there typically has to be a certain
minimal level of plausibility to them. Nobody, least of all you, believes
that two users who don't even reside in the same *country* as you, are
making threats against your life that deserve to be taken seriously.

Indeed, if you were sensible you would probably thank them. They've given
you a pretext to momentarily focus on yourself the public attention that
 you desperately crave.

I'll spare you the sugarcoating I usually put on this speech when people
come to me to complain about what others have written, and give you the
version which is stripped-down to the bare essentials:

    + I'm not your Mommy.
+ Nobody else on Grex is your Mommy, either.
+ If those bad kids on the playground said something that hurt
your feelings then you can either find a way to be friends
with them or go play on another part of the playground.

#12 of 28 by scholar on Sat Nov 12 07:43:06 2005:

why won't you be my mommy? /me yanks on mike's teat

seriously, folks, i don't find the distance of most of the users who make
threats against me a very decent reason to use to discount the seriousness
of such threats.

it's more than two users who have made death threats against me, and, in this
age of cheap international flights, what're the chances NONE of them will hold
true to their threats?

not enough to let me take it lightly. no sir: not when playing with my life.

#13 of 28 by scholar on Sat Nov 12 07:46:24 2005:

and no, folks, please don't think the fact that i was able to read and
write a five sentence response within ten minutes of mike making his somewhat
lengthy middle of the night post!

it's not what you think!

i swear.

Be sure to mention the weed you found in your room when you call the pigs.

#15 of 28 by nharmon on Sat Nov 12 15:46:46 2005:

For some reason, I have a feeling the weed is more likely to kill
scholar than anybody here on Grex.

#16 of 28 by twenex on Sat Nov 12 17:27:29 2005:

I wouldn't waste one microsecond in prison for that little shit.

#17 of 28 by scholar on Thu Nov 17 15:33:43 2005:

You are a very bad man, Jeff.

#18 of 28 by naftee on Thu Nov 17 15:38:50 2005:

righteous and serious when it doesn't go over. That way lies *Jamie*,
fer chrissake. You're way better than that.

#22 of 28 by scholar on Sun Nov 20 19:47:07 2005:

No, *that* way.

#25 of 28 by snarf on Fri Nov 25 05:38:50 2005:

Go to the cops. Tell emm that you are being threaten'd and harras'd. Tell emm
what your telling us. They are bound to do something about it.

#26 of 28 by nharmon on Fri Nov 25 13:33:35 2005:

I wouldn't bet on it, Snarf. :)
