Item 196: Fixing the Lag Updates

Entered by tod on Mon Sep 20 18:47:30 2004:

What is the status of the DSL modem sent to Grex on May 15th?
Has it been flashed for SDSL and tested as a replacement?

These lags are horrendous and while we would like to not jump to conclusions
on the cause, at least be able to know that the DSL modem was
tested and can be ruled out as the problem.

Let us know what the plans are for troubleshooting this insanely lagged
system at the modem and beyond. Thanks.

tod, I wish I could tell you what is going on with that. We are having
some serious problems with staff time being lacking at the moment. The
modem is very much appreciated by me at least.

Thanks Lynne.
Any consideration being done by the BoD on contracting a tech to fix Grex?
(ala Mary Remmers suggestion at least a year ago)

I dont think that is something we can afford at this point, tod.

Someone suggested that the lag was due to a problem in ident. I know
nothing about ident, but this make sense to me. My plan for fixing the
problem is to bring up nextGrex. I'm avoiding working on anything short
of catestrophic problems on oldGrex. But if anyone knows how to turn
off ident, I think we should try that.

Should be able to just replace identd with another uncorrupted one.
I suggested it earlier..the only trick is to find the same version somewhere
else that you can ftp.

The reboot earlier today (either the one before the first backup, or the one
after it; I don't know which) seems to have cleared up the lag. Let's see
if it stays cleared up.

re #7
Mon Oct 4 07:07:27 EDT 2004: Grex was off the net, apparently because
of a failure in the DSL. I power-cycled the modem; we should be good to
go for a little while. -gelinas.

Guess not!

Is the dsl I sent collecting dust or is it actually going to be used?
If its going to continue collecting dust, please let me know and I'll make
arrangements to have it mailed back.

Mary!

Did you know there are FOUR OR FIVE packages that are going to be waiting for
me when I get back to school?!

They'll be filled with all sorts of neat things! Books, cigarettes,
computers, etc.! It's all very exciting!
