Grex Music3 Conference

Item 54: Bees Needs Help in Rocking Out.

Entered by beeswing on Thu Nov 15 19:31:44 2001:

I am going to buy my friend's electric guitar and amp. Not very fancy,
but I don't want fancy for now. Have never taken guitar lessons in my
life and don't plan on it. She dropped it off at my house last night
and I've been twanging my fool head off.

So, for the musically inclined Grexers... are there any good websites
that demonstrate basic chords and such? How do I start out? I did a
search, but most guitar tab sites are based on a specific artist's
music. I need to know where my fingers go for each chord.

(Supposedly, "Smoke on the Water" is easy to learn) :)

Go downtown, find a music store and study Chet's
guitar coarse. You'll get C and E and maybe a bit of D.

Have you tried the library for a basic book on playing guitar?

Hey Bees, the best places to find tab on the web, IMHO, are
TabCrawler.com and OGLA.com....pair that with a cd player or a bank of
Mp3's and you're good to go.

Yeah. That's how I taught myself clarinet in 6th grade :)

#10 of 86 by tsty on Fri Nov 23 04:54:33 2001:

buy a book that has songs you already like and also has the cord
names/fingerings printed above the music.

or, two books .... one with songs you like (or just 'know) with the
cord NAMES printed on teh music ... and the second book would be
a dictionary of guitar chords.

the dictionary can be fairly simple, not 2.5 inches thinck ....

#11 of 86 by cyklone on Fri Nov 23 14:44:50 2001:

I don't know about now, but when I was a novice musician, the Holy Grail
was a book called "Chord Chemistry" which was like a grad-level advanced
textbook with page after page of chords no one but the most avant garde or
sophisticated jazz player would ever use. However, in terms of theory, it
really helped expand one's knowledge after learning the open (or what I
call "campfire" chords), the bars (actually "barre" if I recall
correctly) and the basic inversions and seventh chords.

Speaking of guitars, this seems like an appropriate place for this.

Hey, TS, remember that guitar you borrowed from me? The one you
refused to give back when I asked for you to return it? The one
that you claimed was stolen?

Wouldn't have been if you gave it back. Howsabout you pay for it?
I'll take the $200 I paid, even though it's probably over $300 with
interest and everything.

#15 of 86 by tsty on Sun Nov 25 16:14:23 2001:

uhhhh, no, russ, i have no recollection of any event between
you and me that even vaguely resembles #13. honest!

i guess we could have some chinese sometime and try to figure
out what you are talking about - call me.

#16 of 86 by russ on Tue Nov 27 03:05:06 2001:

Well, TS, I just checked with a mutual friend of ours who
remembers the guitar and the fact that I loaned it to you.
I'm sure that I could turn up several others who could
attest to the provenance of the guitar and a few other
details, such as that you had it in your possession.

Looks like you've got two choices: you can either pay me
for the guitar, or you can be known as a liar AND a thief.
What do you want it to be?

#18 of 86 by slynne on Tue Nov 27 21:26:39 2001:

I think it's cute how russ likes to accuse people of things. He once
said he had some similar dirt on me but he was apparently too chicken
to come out and say what it might have been. I refuse to believe that
his silence on the matter, after making a big production of
his "information", was due to any kind of sense of decency.

I, for one, dont believe his accusations against TS.

#19 of 86 by gull on Tue Nov 27 22:04:45 2001:

I, for one, don't care either way.

#20 of 86 by keesan on Tue Nov 27 22:24:37 2001:

Having met TS when he came in asking for a favor at Kiwanis that took Jim an
hour (hunting up some old equipment for him) and he just sat there and refused
to help test things while Jim was doing him a favor, I would be more inclined
to believe Russ. I have not noticed Russ saying anything accusatory or even
unkind about anyone else (unlike TSTY).

#21 of 86 by slynne on Tue Nov 27 22:41:28 2001:

Well, it isnt worth enough to me to get into an argument about it.

#22 of 86 by krj on Wed Nov 28 06:02:11 2001:

Maybe this whole matter could go into e-mail, or at least into its
own item.

#23 of 86 by keesan on Wed Nov 28 15:34:08 2001:

I think the reason russ brought it up in public rather than in email is that
private communication got him nowhere. If people are done talking about
learning to play the guitar, I would be interested in discussing why it is
sometimes necessary to make public instead of private accusations. If nothing
else, it might make the aggrieved party feel a bit better, plus they are maybe
trying to warn other people. Does it help to involve other people who know
both parties in this discussion, as well as people who don't know either of
them?

#24 of 86 by jep on Wed Nov 28 15:39:43 2001:

#30 of 86 by russ on Thu Nov 29 02:10:55 2001:

You don't have to take my word for it, Sindi. If you really want
to get an earful about TS Taylor, have a chat with Tom (bookie).
Tom was TS's business partner, until... well, I'll let him tell you.
I got off comparatively easy.

(Chinese, huh? I bet he expected me to buy him dinner again.
Did anyone get the impression that he was going to treat me?)

#31 of 86 by mcnally on Thu Nov 29 02:31:44 2001:

I got the impression he meant for you each to pay for your own meal.
Thank god you saw through his evil scheme before it was too late..

#32 of 86 by keesan on Thu Nov 29 14:28:43 2001:

From the two previous postings, I get the vague impression that russ treated
tsty to a meal at a restaurant and tsty invited russ to a restaurant and russ
for some reason expected that tsty would return the favor by treating him.
But I really cannot figure out what is going on here - did I miss something?
My point in mentioning our experience with tsty was that we did him a favor
and he refused to compensate us for the time we put into it. We had to stay
an hour late to do the work that Jim could not do because he was helping tsty,
and that tsty would not do while Jim was helping him. (Easy stuff, plugging
in clock radios to see if they work, etc.). This is why I would be more
inclined to believe Russ's side of a story when he claims that he did
something for tsty (lent him a guitar) and tsty did not return the favor (or
the guitar). I notice that tsty is not participating in this discussion.

Sindi says:
My point in mentioning our experience with tsty was that we did him a favor
and he refused to compensate us for the time we put into it.

Ummmmmmmmmm...... correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the very nature of "doing
someone a favor" incompatible with grousing that you weren't compensated?

(In other words, I agree with #34.)

#35> I prefer Barenjager. But that's not beer, that's a REAL man's drink.

#37 of 86 by bru on Thu Nov 29 17:25:50 2001:

I don't know what the problem is between russ and tsty, adn I do not care.
But this is not the place to discuss it.

Keesan, when someone comes into my place of business and I help them, I do
not expect them to work in order to pay me back. It is either a favor, which
requires no payback, or is for cash, which is what they pay me for, or is
because I want to get something out of my way.

#43 of 86 by senna on Thu Nov 29 22:56:42 2001:

Her opinion of tsty based on one instance shouldn't have any factual bearing
on the reality of another instance unrelated to her. That would be like
Republicans claiming that Bill Clinton was a bad president just because he
had an affair with an inter... oh, wait. Nevermind.

#44 of 86 by russ on Fri Nov 30 03:10:45 2001:

Re #23: You're right, Sindi. I brought it up to warn others.
Also because I'm pissed off.

TS claimed to me that the guitar had gone missing along with
most everything he had as a result of a household situation gone
wrong. Notice that he's not sticking to that story; if he had
he would have said something like "Hey, I was robbed too, I can't
afford to pay you back - maybe someday." But he didn't. Instead
he denied any knowledge of what both he and I (and others) know
very well, which is that my property went missing while in his
possession. That makes him a liar.

Given that he's a liar, I'll bet the story of the household
situation was probably a fabrication too (to have a reason for
my property not being returned). That makes him a thief as well.

I strongly suggest that nobody, here or anywhere, trust a liar
and a thief with anything they want to keep - whether it is
something they own, or any other kind of trust.

If TS wants to come clean, all he has to do is pay me. Or he
can sue me for libel to defend his non-existent reputation.
I expect monkeys to fly out of my butt before either happens.

#46 of 86 by russ on Fri Nov 30 05:51:12 2001:

Re #31: I treated him last time, Mike; I figured his situation
was bad enough to be worthy of charity. He owes me. (Not that
I'd accept now; I would not knowingly sit down to dinner with
someone who either lied to me or stole from me.)

Re #32: Got it in one, Sindi.

Re #43: Combine the independent and unrelated (except via tsty)
experiences of bookie, russ and sindi. Tell me if you evaluate
differently after that.

#47 of 86 by keesan on Fri Nov 30 18:34:14 2001:

Jim and I were not being paid. We were volunteers at Kiwanis and were already
putting in too much time. Customers do not normally come in after hours while
we are testing equipment, or demand that volunteers continue looking for
equipment for them for an hour. He could have come on Saturday morning and
waited in line for his 5 minutes of Jim's time like everyone else. For
special treatment like he got, to someone we did not even know, I would expect
ANYONE to help us out in exchange. Other people had done so. I don't recall
that we even got any thanks. I hope this at makes Russ feel like he has a
bit of support. We have also run into people who think that if you lend them
something it must not be worth anything to you in the first place, and now
we only lend things out that we don't care about.

#48 of 86 by brighn on Fri Nov 30 18:36:01 2001:

I understand your annoyance, Sindi, although supporting accusations that
someone's a thief (slander) based on evidence that someone's a jerk isn't
sound in my book.

#49 of 86 by krj on Fri Nov 30 19:39:52 2001:

I'd think that was up to Bees, if anyone.

#51 of 86 by keesan on Fri Nov 30 22:12:31 2001:

If you read my original comment, brighn, you will not that I am not accusing
anyone of stealing anything. I only said that I personally am more likely
to believe Russ's side of the story because of the way tsty treated us. This
is a simple statement of fact. And I can understand how Russ could be upset
about how he was treated after doing favors for tsty that were not only not
returned but abused.

#55 of 86 by russ on Sat Dec 1 19:02:02 2001:

Re #45: Don't you mean "Steal from people, lie to people, reap
their disdain"? Or do you really think that someone who steals
and lies shouldn't suffer any consequences, social or otherwise?

I didn't know that TS was lying until I saw response #13. Up to
that time I gave him the benefit of the doubt. No longer; he's
hoist on his own petard, probably because he couldn't remember
what explanation he'd made up this time. (That's a good argument
for telling the truth; it's so much easier to keep straight.)

#56 of 86 by drew on Sun Dec 2 02:16:54 2001:

I stole a guitar of happyboy's. He cant have it back either.

You know what I do with it? I play it. Now that is a crime because I
dont know how to play a guitar or even how to tune it. **evil grin**

Anyhow, one thing I can say about russ is that he gives me a good laugh
now and then. I love how he is going on about how his public accusation
of TS is doing everyone a favor so they can know to avoid lending him
anything when all he is really doing is being kind of a jerk. It's
almost as funny as his comment about how he offered to help edit Popular
Science and they for some strange reason didnt take him up on his offer.
HMMMM??? It would be like me offering to pose nude in Playboy and then
wondering why they wouldnt take me up on my offer. HAHAHAHAHA!

Whoa. I've been catching up on M-Net's agora.cf
so I got a little confused and thought I should
doublecheck the IP address . .

Guitar is my worst instrument, I swear.
I tried different guitar teachers and they
all flunked. I put some attention span into
this one chart of guitar chord positions, a one
page sheet with about 100 chord diagrams on it.
I picked the easiest and most common ones and
practiced them and highlited them in yellow as
I went. About 15 of them.

A talented guitar player reviewed it and frowned,
shaking his head. "Shaky" he said. I said what.
        "Misleading".

If I ever try again, I want one of those electric guitars
with incredibly low action. I tried this one dude's
Gibson SG, I think it was, the same Pete Who uses.

Ever tried to tune a guitar that's not calibrated
correctly? It's impossible and so frustrating.
A guitar has to be correctly setup and maintained
        by a professional luthier.

#70 of 86 by mary on Sun Dec 9 13:51:34 2001:

I'll disagree with most of what you said. A guitar is one of the
cheapest instruments you can buy yet have a range of what you can
do with it. For $400 you can have a decent instrument. And it's
easy enough to teach yourself the basics, really. Ask the billons
of kids and adults that have done it and have had a great time.
I'm one of 'em. Not that lessons can't be helpful, but unlike
classical instruments, it sure ain't necessary.

It's also dead easy to tune. Unless you have a really warped guitar.
And I don't know of any instrument that can be easily tuned when
damaged.

You want hard? Get yourself an instrument without frets, play it
with a band of horsehair, and have the strings cost $50 each. ;-)
