I can't stand the show much-- maybe for the same reasons some folks
like it: so many bad singers who think they're so great and someone
like Simon Cullow has to take them down a notch. Hey, he's cruel, but
he's to the point.

I'd rather watch Star Search-- or even, the now canceled This Is Your
Big Break.

That's what I was saying: the people must really be buying into the
fluffy drama and all that-- party people with no talent who get
humbled by a cranky Brit.

But it's just not my cup of tea.

It's a little different seeing "Star Search" hosted by Arsenio Hall
instead of Ed McMahon, but I like it.

I also miss This Is Your Big Break-- what's his name of Kidd and Play
hosted it. I even considered turning in a tape.

I am somewhat hooked on this too. Primarily for the bad singers as I
have never laughed my ass off so much as with that one guy tried to
sing the Star Spangled Banner and didn't even know the words.

Anyway, I have stayed watching it even though the best part is over. I
was PISSED that America passed up on Kimberly. She was my pick for the
whole think as I thought she rocked.

I don't know the names, so I'll say the three will be: The big black
guy, The chick who sang "You light up my light" and the skinny kid
with the glasses.

The two winners will be big black guy and the chick.

(I really am only watching them while I do other stuff, so I don't
really know all of the drama and personal stuff.)

Wow. Someone had the guts to sing the most hated song
in America? "You Light Up My Life", while being the most chart
successfull song of all time (most weeks at #1 and at the top of
the Billboard charts), it is the top tune-out song, beating
"Feelings" (Morris Alpert).

#16 of 151 by jaklumen on Thu Feb 13 08:00:25 2003:

You people are way too hooked on this. I just can't watch the show.

But apparently people just love this crap and so it keeps making the
news. This was kinda interesting.. they kicked Frenchie Davis off the
show because she'd done some porn video when she was 18. What's your
opinion? I don't know if there's a precedence for this for young pop
stars, but it's pretty common knowledge that many Hollywood
celebrities have stuff of them naked somewhere in their past..

I *HATE* when those stupid contestants argue with the judges. If you

On a happier note, I pick Chip (I think that was his name) and the
marine dude to win today.

commented about how in tune he was. I thought he had some good moments
though. I'll throw him in as my 3rd.

Patrick made it to the final three last night? I missed it. That
means he'll be back in the wild card, right?

About the weight stuff, Simon's point might be that in our screwed up
world, it's more ok for a guy to be overweight as a superstar image
than it is for a woman. I dunno. Just a thought.

Ok, I am bummed.
Kimberly sucked it up last night. I'm really hoping she makes it in
but it won't be by her performance last night.

Clay was the best ever. He's my new favorite. And the last chick was
good. The others were fair.

How does this round work? I'm not really sure.

They basically told her that she needed to shine in this audition, and

performances. We'll see!

#46 of 151 by furs on Thu Mar 6 03:06:57 2003:

Ok Sapna, I love you so much, I even looked up the names on the web
site so I got them right. :)

So how it went was the three judges each picked who they wanted to go
through, then America picked one.

Randy picked Kimberly,
Paula picked Trenyce,
Simon picked Carman,
America picked Clay.

I was pretty suprised about Carman, I thought that Chip was much
better, but oh well, I was mostly glad about Kimberly and Clay going
through. Simon said Clay's performance on Tuesday was the best of
this whole series this time.

A lot of the show was focused around Simon and why he was in SUCH a
bad mood on Tuesday. Apparently he had some behind the scenes
problems with producers and stuff and had to fire them and that was
one of the reasons he was so mean on Tuesday. The host and other two
judges were giving him a hard time about how rude he was being, it was
pretty funny.

That's about it. How was that for notes?

I thought Rueben was incredible.
My top three from last night where Clay, Rueben and Trenyce with
Kimberly Caldwell 4th. I also thought Julia was boring.

I was suprised at Simon's comment about Clay "Motown on Browadway". I
thought he was incredible. Him and Kimberly Caldwell are my two
favorites.

The person I think is going to get voted out is Charles Grigsby. I
also don't know what simon saw in Corey Clark, I didn't like his
performance last night.

Is this going to go on for 12 more weeks? I don't know if I can take
it or not.

I feel pretty much the same last week as I do this week. Reuben was

I'll say my pick will be Julia or Corey. Maybe add in Carmen for the

Kimberly Caldwell was in the bottom three!!!! She was the best this
week. I also thought Ricky was much better than corey, so I totally
didn't agree this week.

So it was Kimberly, Julia and Ricky in the bottom three.

I'm glad Julia got voted out.

Josh was good, but didn't like that song particularly. It's totally
his type of music, though.

was good. But it wasn't my favorite genre.

I think the bottom three will be Josh, Kimberly Caldwell and Ricky,
with Josh going.

I love Kimberly Caldwell, but I do agree with the judges.

I'm glad Clarke is out too, he just didn't belong there.

#79 of 151 by furs on Thu Apr 3 18:22:14 2003:

hahahahahaahaha
Ok here's the scoop.

Bottom three: Kimberly Locke, Trenyce, Carmen

Kimberly Locke was then sent back to her seat, so it was up to Trenyce
and Carmen. So they both sang their song again, and after the
commercial at the very end of the show, they said because of the Corey
Clarke thing, everyone was safe this week and no one was voted off but
next week the voting scores would be added to this weeks and there
would be someone voted off this week.

I think Trenyce is one of the best up there, so I am in shock about
that.

When they asked the judges whether or not they agreed with the bottom
three, none of them did, especially Simon. He said "I think there is
someone up there sitting on the couch that should be in the bottom
three and he know's who he is." I think he was talking about JOsh, but
Ricky was quite nervous about it.

When they announced they weren't voting anyone off, Simon looked quite
suprsised, but I don't know if that was scripted or not.

the key words are probably "actively" and "on a regular basis."

I can't watch it for longer than about 30 seconds now.. some are
genuinely skilled, but I'd rather skip the drama. Last time Julie had
it on.. who was Mr. Fro? sorry, I totally disagreed with her
assessment of his performance of EW&F's "Let's Groove Tonight."

On that note, I have to admit that even "Star Search" was a bit of a
disappointment.. on the few shows I saw, you could really see that the
judges clearly had obvious biases sometimes, with wildly differing
scores.

Sapna, I just said I really don't watch the show. I saw enough bad
attitudes, immaturity, and what not that I just tuned out. If this
unprofessionalism somehow makes good television, whatever. I
understand Simon is there to provide more dramatic tension, and he's
right-- some of these kids really are BAD-- but I find his personality
grating at times.

The opinion I didn't agree with? That would be Paula Abdul. (Some
people should not sing falsetto.) I don't think highly of her singing-
- she's fine, but I wouldn't say she's super superb-- but I would say
she's a hell of a dancer. I wouldn't mind hiring her as my
choreographer, if I could afford the fees.

(Now I do have to admit they might have better judges than they do on
Star Search. Then again, the Idol judges might have it a slight
easier-- they give subjective comments, while the Star Search judges
have to give numeric ratings.)

Ms. Abdul might be there to take the edges of Simon's bluntness-- I
don't know.

Although the kids might not remember this star, I think they should
add Taylor Dayne to the panel. Julie tells me she was classically
trained, and I think that adds depth to her R&B-tinged career. Having
had voice lessons myself, I think a classically trained artist is
better able to judge clarity, projection, and intonation. I
understand that vocal artists need to have a unique sound to carve out
a niche, but they really need to learn these basics. I can't count
the number of times I've heard crazy chicks on the radio or whatnot
trying to copy the current R&B vocal gymnastics but have zero skills
in these three basic areas.

Think about it-- although sound engineers can sculpt your voice to
sound fab in the studio, and image consultants can make you look super
on stage, I don't think artists will last long if they don't have some
honest skill (as well as some social relevance). Money is made
primarily in the concert venues-- studio and video work is a thinly
sliced pie.

However, Kimberly Locke keeps getting better and Josh was quite good

"The Boondocks" comic had an American Idol reference today, for Reuben.
That's about as much as I know at this point.

#107 of 151 by orinoco on Wed Apr 23 13:25:26 2003:

My co-workers at the temp job I just finished were obsessed with American Idol
(and with Reuben, for what it's worth), but now that I'm done working there
I've lost my hookup for information.

I agree with you for the most part, but I do think Kimberly Lock is
really on a roll.

I think Carmen and Josh should have gone before K. Caldwell, but that's
MY opinion!

Wow Sapna, you were right on! Good Job!

Ok, I'm f**king pissed. America sucks for voting! ;)

First of all, Carmen and Josh should have been gone long before K
Caldwell (as far as talent goes.) Now it's Rueben and Trenyce in the
bottom two above Josh? I agree completely with Simon that he Josh is
not good enough for this. I agree with Trenyce being there, but not
Rueben.

Oh well, let's see who goes...

#114 of 151 by furs on Thu May 1 02:00:48 2003:

Ok Trenyce is a goner.

Probably. I guess I'm more pissed about Josh not being in there than
Ruben being in there.

Ruben isn't my fav, but I think he at least is in the top 3.

My top three in order are:
Clay
Kimberly
Rueben

IMHO, Kimberly Clark has really stepped up to the bar recently. But
Clay has been so frigging consistent, it'll be hard to beat that.

I'm SO glad they critized him on his facial ticks. That was the only
thing I didn't like about him, and he looks SO much better when he
doesn't do them.

hahahahahaha!
Yeah, that's who I mean. I guess I'm getting Kelly Clark and her mixed
up.

BTW, I hated Justin's performance this week. I guess I just don't like
pop music that much anyway, so I don't enjoy this stuff sometimes.

Ok, I missed the first half of last night, but I saw the second.

I thought Josh, Reuben and Kimberly were really good and Clay was ok.

But from the clip, it looks like Clay was good on the first one and
Josh's first one was ok.

I think Josh should have gone a long time ago, so why should I change
my mind now!?

I'll say bottom two is Josh and Kim with Kim gone.
But I agree about his fan base.

BTW, Clay shouldn't do his hip move, it looks too fake. He is an
awesome singer though.

almost over.

My prediction for the winner: Rueben

Did you see the SNL spoof on America Idol? It was funny.

Clay did better tonight than Rueben did, but I can't decide. I'll
stick with Rueben, but I like Clay better, I think.

I can't wait till this show is over. I won't be watching it again,
it's way too much.

who's that chick who won last year?

#147 of 151 by krj on Fri May 23 15:11:38 2003:

Kelly Clarkson. You might not be paying attention, but she was on the
cover of PEOPLE or some similar celebrity magazine in the last few weeks;
she had an album released in April, and it's #4 in sales at amazon.com.
