Item 56: In search of a skating program

Entered by snowth on Sun Jul 13 03:50:24 1997:

Here's the deal. I'm going to be testing soon for my figure skating, and
I need a program. My coaches are like "Well, go find some music you like,
and we'll see." The thing is, nothing's clicking. I was wondering if anybody
had any great ideas on what to use. It can't have words, or scare away
judges (most of which seem fairly conservative). Any brillant ideas?

Can you give us some idea of the sort of length, pace, etcetera, that you're
looking for? Uninformed scum like me have no clue what 'good skating music'
is.

This is a somewhat off-the-wall suggestion but it occurs to me that
there are several instrumental pieces on the compilation album
"Scandal Ska" (on Mango Records..) The album is a collection of early
Jamaican ska music (think of jazz-influenced Caribbean music with a
distinctive beat.) Very danceable and likely to be unfamiliar to the
judges.. I'm thinking of one piece on the album in particular, "Exodus",
as one I could envision accompanied by a skating program..

However, orinoco's right, probably none of us are going to be able to
provide mch of an answer unless you give us more information about your
  requirements for the music..

I agree. We need to know what kind of program you're going to use for your
test-- what kind of skating you'll do. Fitting your skating pattern to your
music will be best.

re #3: Another song entirely.. this one's an instrumental piece
that bears no resemblance to Marley's song (which came along about
10 years later..) Biblical reference is fairly common in all kinds
of Jamaican music, which no doubt accounts for the common title..

Typically, skaters tend to prefer more conservative music types for their
programs... classical, maybe jazz. More upbeat and youth oriented music is
saved for Fox television specials.

I talked to snowth about this, and what she said was that it should be no
shorter than 2 and a half minutes, and if it's much longer it'll have to be
cut, that it shouldn't be too fast or slow, and that it should have 'peaks
and valleys' of activity.

Re:6 Yeah. Your right, senna, and I have totally no clue what to look for in
that area.

Thanks y'all for the seggestions! My coaches seem to have found something that
they want me to listen to, so I might be set...but if not I'll let y'all know.
