Item 306: Aspiring DJ

Entered by cer0 on Tue Apr 10 23:44:11 2001:

I'm wanting to start "spinning" my own techno/house music and I want some
opinions on what turntables people have used and what they like best. If you
have how much they cost, or a vague sum on how much they are worth, then do
tell ;) shanks.

Luckily, there's a wealth of info to be had online since DJs are now a growth
industry. Check out sales sites like www.pssl.com for a *lot* of different
products. That's a place to at least get started (although you'll probably
be depressed when you find out the #1 DJ turntable costs at least $500 each).

If you live anyplace nearby, you might be interested in the DJ-ing lessons
that I saw advertized at Grooveyard (in downtown Ann Arbor).

(damn it. Grex kept cutting out on me, and now it's too late to post
my response, because the damn item's been linked to music.)

(Apparently carson is allergic to linked items, since he also declined to
participate in the Grammy Award item after it was made as a linked item.)

ok, Im a DJ, and have been for the past 6 years, I have won battles all over
the state... and although Im not into techno, Im more into straight
scratching... I can tell you for a fact that the guy doing the lessons at
GrooveYard is a punk, he is absolutly terrible, and fronts like he is good.
The best way to learn to be a DJ is to spend HOURS alone in your room teaching
yourself. And if you are serious about it, dont buy one of those "starter
packages" in a big cereal box! get Technics 1200s, or some nice Vestax
turntable (the PDX 2000's come to mind), and think about a vestax 05, 06, 07
or a pro level stanton mixer... if you plan on mixing techno you will need
something with a 3 band EQ... I personally use 2 technics 1200's with Shure
44-7 needles, an Ecler HAK mixer (I also own a vestax 06)...
Hope that helped some...
and rember DJing is not easy, it takes some serious practice and work before
you get good... so dont give up...
Also look for me playing raves in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Detroit, etc...
dont want to say who I am, dont want to cause beef...
peace
