Item 298: Help Support struggling musicians! (A mp3.com list)

Entered by micklpkl on Mon Feb 26 18:40:02 2001:

I thought this might be a nice place to list and share a little about local
musicians we've discovered through mp3.com, or one of the other artist direct
websites out there. Please list the URL along with a description of the style
of music, or how you found them, so this doesn't become a gigantic list of
internet addresses.

I was prompted to enter this item mostly because of the group of musicians
I heard on this morning's edition of "Eklektikos" on KUT. They played a very
professional "Nuevo Flamenco" style of music, and I thought somebody else
might appreciate that as much as I do. Their name is CADAQUES, and they are
a local Austin combo featuring Hector Vasquez and Jamie Munoz on flamenco
guitar, bass, keyboards and percussion rounding out the mix. Some of the
slower tracks had significant New Age feel to them, so caveat auditor! I like
the more upbeat and jazzy songs.

I've been having a wonderful time trawling through mp3.com's
electronic and techno sections. I've found some great people
there. I now have two CD's just about stuffed with .mp3 files
from them, and will be accumulationg more.

Off the top of my head, the following are worth listening to.
Artiface is likely my single favorite; with Deformed Mind a close
second. But it's hard to pick them so I'll add Animobo, Jason
Ward, NikiVee, Slow No Wake, Blue Horizon, Alex Vinkle, Bob Doyle,
CICALONE, Mario Gongora, Autopoiesis, Barry K, Christian Baum.

Those are the people I can think of, now. There are more,
just waiting to be found on mp3.com.

The Austin Celtic Assoc. has a new CD out featuring many of our favourite
local Celtic acts, from Ed Miller to Doc Grauzer, Brobdingnagian Bards to
Tudor Tarts! You can find more here:

Nice cover art by the creator of ZOOKMAN (The Comic Strip that goes better
with Guinness!), Mike Tackett. http://www.halcyon.com/gecko/

(Thumbs up for Zookman. One of the funniest celtic music comics on the
planet!)

John Remmers mentioned a ragtime band to me called Bo Grumpus, a trio
of guitar, acoustic bass and percussion. After playing the four free
tracks on mp3.com I was motivated to order their CD.
