Item 297: Grammy Awards 2001

Entered by krj on Thu Feb 22 20:07:55 2001:

Well, I didn't have many real observations, but perhaps if I build
the item, responses will come.

A few of the people I was rooting for took their categories down in
the low end of the ballot: but in almost every case, I'm an album or two
behind in keeping up with them, so I haven't heard the albums which
won the awards. On the other hand I do have this Sam Goody giftcard
to spend, so...

Awards which put a smile on my face included:
Male Country Vocal Performance -- "Solitary Man," Johnny Cash
Bluegrass Album -- "The Grass Is Blue," Dolly Parton
                            (the one album I heard)
Contemporary Blues Album -- "Shoutin In Key," Taj Mahal
Traditional Folk Album -- "Public Domain," Dave Alvin
(who was in The Blasters long ago)
Contemporary Folk Album -- "Red Dirt Girl," Emmylou Harris

I was happy to see Steely Dan win a few.

I love the song "Cherokee Maiden" by Asleep at the Wheel. I was happy to see
it win best country group.

I was glad to see that U2 won several categories in which theirs was the only
song that didn't make me want to change the channel. <rhetorical>Is there
really such a dearth of decent music out there?</rhetorical>

Yes, 2000 was a terrible year for (American) music.

re #1: I despise the Grammys so much that, as much as I like Steely Dan,
I was annoyed to see them win one..

I'm exceptionally happy to see that the sugar-pop bands didn't win much.

I was glad to see U2 win too...those guys are friends whose music
reflects the lives they've grown up sharing together. Unlike all
these pre-fab acts (Backstreet Boys, NSYNC) who were formed at
auditions before high powered agents and producers. Acts that
are put together artifically, heavily choreographed, with others
playing the instruments, and songs written and force-fed to them.
Music is becoming artificial. At least a few real groups like U2
are left.

Actually, Richard, you might want to get your facts straight. Both Backstreet
and NSynch got together BEFORE they had managment, and on the last albums they
have done, have written and even produced their own songs. 3 members of
Backstreet are related, and 3 Members of NSync were on the Mickey Mouse Club
together, and then found the 5th memeber because he was reccomended by the
voice coach from their youth. (too much VH1, I tell you)

I've lost some interest in gU2 lately, I liked them better before...when they
were a band, and before Bono got dilustions of grandure.

(But he's so damn _good_ at megalomania...)

Hey Richard why don't you tell the experimental collage bad Negativland how
"great" U2 are? The so called idealists in U2 actively pursued a lawsuit
against Negativalnd over a few sound samples they calulated to ruin
Negativland. If you really want to hear more authentic music support
muscians who record on independent lables.

(I love those Negativland "U2" songs!)

The Back Street boys were manufactured ashke. It all started when this rich
fat airline mogul dude placed an ad in the miami herald in 1991.

Unless VH1 is lying.
