I sang at Dave Alway's house last Saturday, not much of a stage, but a good caliegh of 7 or 8 people.
I will be appearing in the opera "Hansel & Gretel," by Engelbert Humperdinck this weekend up at Michigan State University. My performances are Friday night at 8 PM, and Sunday afternoon at 3 PM. I play the Witch. I just *love* to eat little children! Yum. Performances will be at Fairchild Theater, on the MSU campus. Tickets are available from the Wharton Box Office at 517-432-2000. I suspect tickets will be available at the door as well. This is going to be a wonderful show, and even non-opera lovers will likely enjoy it. Tickets are $16, $8 for students.
Final notice: my last performance as the Witch in Hansel & Gretel will be later today (Sunday) at 3 PM up at MSU. The show has been going very well, and audiences have been loving it.
I'm surprised they didn't get swallowed up by all the non-rioting
UGH! I have to work at five. You play the witch? That is Most Cool. =)
Katie Geddes and The Usual Suspects tonight at 8 pm at Green Wood. Only $8! We may not always be that cheap! Proceeds to benefit The Appalachian Service Project, so we'll be doing a fair amount of Appalachian-type stuff, and it's a very good cause: folks are travelling to the very poorest areas to renovate homes in very bad repair.
I was "on stage" a bit at last weekend's Tom Turpin Ragtime Festival in Savannah, GA. Played a few tunes at after-hours, including some duo-piano stuff with Nan Bostick and John Yates.
Rumor has it that I will join Melanie for a couple of songs in her shows this weekend. If you don't go in person, you can experience it via the WebCast Fri night at 8 pm.
Leslie's run in "The Mikado" opens Thursday. Tickets at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre box office. Shows are Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon.
I got mine. There weren't very many left for Friday and Saturday, and that was a week ago. Thursday was a bit easier.

The UMGASS production of THE MIKADO, with Leslie as Katisha, seems to be a hit. Saturday night's show is reported to be sold out. Other remaining shows are Friday night, Saturday matinee and Sunday matinee.
You can hear me singing with Melanie on WWWW 106.7 FM this Sunday morning between 8am and noon. We recorded it this evening.
You can see me on stage at MSU's Wharton Center Great hall on April 18th with the mens glee club.. I'll be the one in the green blazer with the shiny bald head :) and at a concert on April 20th with Capital Green and the new accapella group which I am a part of called A State of Harmony :) Look for updates to follow with times etc

This Thursday I'll be performing with other student cellists in the lobby of University Hospital. It's part of the university's Gift of Art project. Do you think it would be rude if I didn't change out of my scrubs? ;-)
Couldn't you remain in scrubs to attend to those in the audience who swoon from the celestial sounds of an all-cello ensemble? How many voices did the arrangers create?
Actually, yesterday was a day off, I was in a dress, and all the cellists performed different pieces. It went well. I'm trying to talk John into doing a solo ragtime performance for Gifts of Art.
I attended the cello performance at U Hospital. Mary did a duet with her teacher that went quite well. The other cellists -- who ranged in age from little kid to adult -- were pretty good too. After the cello performances, I did a brief audition for the lady in charge of the Gift of Art program. If the scheduling works out, I may be performing sometime this fall. My ballet ragtime performance is next Saturday, May 13. The student recital starts at 7:30pm and takes place at Mercy High School, located at 11 Mile and Middlebelt Roads, in the northwest Detroit burbs. It's open to the public, $7 for adults and $3.50 for children, tickets at the door. I'll be playing George Botsford's "Black and White Rag", as choreographed by the ballet teacher, Karen Milligan. Be forewarned that my spot is only about 5 minutes' worth of a 90-minute recital. But after last night's rehearsal I know it'll be a *good* 5 minutes, especially the part where the dozen ballerinas all run around the piano... :)
I'll be in the Grand Rapids Symphonette performance Friday at 7:30pm in Royce auditorium of St. Cecelia Music Society Building, Downtown Grand Rapids. For the purposes of grex sighters, i'm the fat, ugly trombone player who NEVER plays during a rest. For those unaquainted with the Grand Rapids Symphonette, this is a volunteer, service organization dedicated to bringing music to whose who cannot attend live music performances. Thus our venues are mostly nursing homes, retirement centers and other places where the audience has already had significant hearing loss. Those who would walk out probably can't without help. The Friday night performance marks the end of a rehearsal/performance tour of the metropolitan Grand Rapids area. In order to keep the audience, a reception is held in the ballroom above with punch and cookies!
"Quite well...". I thought it was a bit better than that. When was the last time you went up to seventh position and played harmonics in forte? With horsehair. In a two story auditorium? Just two instruments carrying the lot? I thought so. ;-)
Make that 4 stories. At least. ;-)
I made a sudden and unexpected appearance onstage during a program at Hill Auditorium tonight when the MC went off the script and brought Isaac Stern up to the stage before he was supposed to. I was told to go out there and escort Stern back to his seat, and since I was backstage, the only way to do it was to zip from the stage right door upstage, where I was, down to the stair where he was, and walk him back up the aisle. It was helpful that his wife was standing up by his seat because I didn't know which row he was seated in. Oops, I guess that's live show business for you. :)
I'm happy to announce that for my ballet recital ragtime performance, I'll be wearing appropriate period garb -- black pants and vest, white shirt, red bow tie, red sleeve garters, and a straw hat. This will be a rare opportunity to see me so outlandishly outfitted. See #20 (resp:20) for time and place details.
I'll be part of a cello recital, this Sunday, at Kerrytown Concert House. I'm accompanying an adult beginner cello student as she plays two pieces, by Crone and Offenbach.
My ballet gig last Saturday went well. Details can be found in my "Ragtime Notebook" item, responses 184 and 185. (It's item 8 in classicalmusic and item 9 in music). (Backtalkers can click on resp:music,9,184 and resp:music,9,185)
I'll be contributing one song to Bob Fest this FRiday.
I will be walking across a stage sometime on June 7, sometime after 5pm (but before 8pm). The exact time of said walking is unknown.
or the exact stage. ^_^
the exact stage will be a temporary stage set up inside Crisler arena. I do not have a speaking/performing role. I would also recommend NOT coming, as Crisler apparently gets very hot during the High School graduation ceremonies
I shared a stage with Gene Kelly once, at Crisler.
At the recent Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia, MO -- first week of June -- I performed three 10-minute sets in the "tent", a large open-air facility featuring both professional and amateur musicians. Played about ten pieces altogether, by composers such as Charles Johnson, James Scott, and Charles Daniels. I also played several times during after-hours open piano. Got a number of good comments, especially for Joplin's "Rose Leaf Rag", which I like to play in an up-tempo version.
Pardon me if I already entered this: Katie Geddes and The Usual Suspects will be performing on the State Street Area stage at the Art Fair Wed July 19 (tomorrow) at 5:45 pm. Also appearing at Borders (Arborland) on Fri Aug 11 from 7 till 9 pm. No admission charge to either show. >
I'm going to be playing bass guitar in a trio next Wednesday (AUg. 16) at Bab's Piano Lounge in Ann Arbor. I'm not sure how much of the eveing I'll be playing, though. Also, the bandleader warned me that the place is pretty smokey. Anyway, it's a start.
See Katie Geddes and the Usual Suspects at the Arborland Borders this Friday August 11th. 7pm in the cafe.
(Note: This is the *spring* Grexers On Stage item.)
I suppose then that krj ought to freeze this item if there is a corresponding summer item...
There is no correspoding summer item, and with fall 2 weeks away I'm not going to bother creating one. I'm going to be appearing with the Nick Strange Trio this Thursday at T.C.s in Ypsi (first set, probably 10:30pm or so). Come see the debut of my electric upright bass! Next week I'll be playing with the same band at Bab's on Liberty in Ann Arbor, 2nd/3rd sets (maybe 10:30-12:00). (I'm one of two bass players for this band... redundancy makes committing to gigs much easier).
You have several choices:
