This item, crosslinked between the Agora and Music conferences, is for Grexers to announce their upcoming artistic performances. If you don't want Grexers to show up, you can announce the performance after it has happened. This *has* been done.23 responses total.
I'm scheduled to do some ragtime accompaniment for a ballet recital on Saturday, May 13. More detail when I know more.
Sat, Mar 18, Katie Geddes and The Usual Suspects open for Mark Dvorak at Mama's Coffee House in Birmingham; Sat Apr 1 we appear at Green Wood Coffee House in Ann Arbor. We do folk, country-folk and folk-gospel music. (John, are you by any chance doing "Great Galloping Gottschalk?")
I'm living my life as artistically as I know how. Does that count?
Grexers couldn't possibly show up to my concerts, unless they felt the air trip was worth it, hehe I was in a chamber guitar ensemble concert last Friday. My featured solo was "Romanza," a traditional Spanish ballad. (one of scores of tunes named 'Romanza,' btw-- Romanza simply means song)
I don't know if this counts as performing - well, I guess it's performing, in a matter of speaking. I'm still doing my radio show from 6-9am every Saturday on WCBN, 88.3 Ann Arbor. My last show will be March 25. This coming Saturday, I'm doing a Robyn Hitchcock tribute. If you're in far-off lands, we have a RealAudio feed... www.wcbn.org
The trio I'm in (flute, violin and cello) is planning a family and friends recital for the late spring. We'll be playing one of the Haydn London Trios and C.P.E. Bach's Trio in B minor.
(Re resp:2 - I'm familiar with the composer Gottschalk, but what's "Great Galloping Gottschalk"?)
A wonderful ballet choreographed by Lynn Taylor-Corbett (I may have the name a little wrong). I saw American Ballet Theatre do it several years ago.
Well, heck, I'll put in a plug: Visit the following web site, and see what I mean: http://www.mihometown.com/oe/plycomband
Re resp:7 and resp:8 - What I'll be playing are one or two standard length ragtime piano solos that were not originally written with ballet in mind. I tape-recorded a few pieces at the teacher's ballet class a couple of weeks ago. She'll select one or two of these and figure out how to choreograph them.
Sunday afternoon I will be singing the soprano solo from the Brahms Requiem. This will happen at a memorial service for Fred Shure, at the Michigan Theater at 2 PM. Admission is free and there will be lots of other good music, and free food at the reception afterward. This is meant to be a joyous occasion.
Here's some information on my next two gigs: The opera "Hansel & Gretel," by Engelbert Humperdinck is coming to the Fairchild Theater at Michigan State University beginning March 23. I will be performing the role of The Witch on March 24 at 8 PM and March 26 (Sun.) at 3 PM (The show is double cast). Tickets are available from the Wharton Center. I will have to post the phone number later. This is going to be a terrific show! The Gilbert & Sullivan operetta "The Mikado" will be performed at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater on the UM campus from April 6 through April 9, with 8 PM shows on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 2 PM matinees on Saturday and Sunday. I will be playing the role of Katisha, and terrorizing all around me. Tickets are available throught the Michigan League ticket office. Number to be posted later. This too is going to be a wonderful show. On April 10 I plan to sleep all day.
Uh oh -- is Leslie getting typecast? Playing witches and things that rhyme therewith? Seriously, Leslie is a wonderful singer and the opportunity to hear her should not be missed. Not sure if we can make "Hansel and Gretel," but we definitely plan to catch "Mikado". I spoke to Karen the ballet teacher the other day. After listening to the tunes I taped for her, she's decided to do "Black and White Rag" for her recital. It's one of my favorite rags and a real crowd-pleaser, so I'm happy. Performance is May 13 at a high school in the northwestern Detroit 'burbs. I'll post time and place later.
Hey, at the same time John was entering this item, at home, I was at work, on the telephone with the Michigan League, buying tickets for the Saturday evening performance of Mikado. I mean, at *exactly* the same time. How Zen.
My friend Tania, who is the keyboard player at Green Wood, is conducting Daughter of the Regiment at Lydia Mendelssohn that night.
Um, not that Saturday. *This* Saturday.
Tania Miller?
Yes, sir.
I enjoyed her performance as "Bat-conductor" at the one halloween concert i've made it to. that was much better than ken kiesler flashing us his underwear.
I'll see her today. I'll tell her you like her even better than Ken Kiesler's underwear.
<chuckle>
I'm sitting in with Unkle Funkle on soprano and alto recorder tommorrow night...next wed. night Filipe Eric and I are doing open mike ...Unkle Funkle's at the Side Bar...the open mike's at Common Grounds coffee house...everyone's invited to come on out to both shows .
Leslie, if life were a little more free I'd be inclined to come all the way in just to see you play Katisha. Did you know that her duet with Ko-ko is one of Berni's and my favorite songs to sing together? (The other is "I once was a very abandoned person" from _Ruddigore_, of course.) God, this is tempting. But no: I do have to stay home.
You have several choices:
