It occurs to me that I'm probably never again going to play many of
the cassette tapes I have (most of which have been superceded by CDs.)
In order that someone might get some use out of them, I'm giving away
the following tapes (from the first group I came across, more will
probably show up later):
Adrian Belew -- "Young Lions"
King Crimson -- "USA" (70's-era live album, no longer in print.)
King Crimson -- "Islands"
King Crimson -- "Starless and Bible Black"
Elvis Costello -- "This Year's Model"
Elvis Costello -- "Spike"
Desmond Dekker -- "16 Greatest Hits" (including the classic "Israelites"!)
Pere Ubu -- "Cloudland" (highly recommended..)
Roxy Music -- "Stranded"
David Bowie -- "Lodger"
Rocky Horror Picture Show -- Motion Picture Soundtrack
Talking Heads -- "More Songs About Buildings and Food"
Graham Parker -- "Live! Alone in America"
INXS -- "Listen Like Thieves"
Various Artists -- "This Is Charly [Records] Soul"
Luka Bloom -- "The Acoustic Motorbike"
If you're interested in a tape, please respond in this album. I'd like
to see them go to as many people as possible, so please just ask for one
(or possibly two) tapes until everyone's had a shot..
61 responses total.
BTW, preference will be given to local "orders" or to people willing to send a self-addressed, stamped mailer to receive the tape (or tapes.) I don't mind giving them away, but I don't look forward to spending my own money to do so..
I'd like, any one of the following: Desmond Dekker hee hee
Aw man, I wanted the Desmond Dekker. ;(
A fine choice.. Be warned that exposure to the bassline in "Israelites" can have lasting aftereffects.. Katie has first dibs on the Desmond Dekker tape. Contact me separately to arrange some reasonable way for me to get it to you..
You may have it, omni. I have a CD or two of his. I heard a while ago that there was going to be a DD box set -- never have seen it.
Ooh...can I please have the David Bowie? (The album, not the man, though I'd take both). ;-)
Everybody needs a copy of David Bowie (the man, not the album). I'd love Crimson's "USA," and I'll take "Islands" too if nobody wants it.
<laughs at the first line of #7>
re #6, 7: gypsi gets the David Bowie, then, and orinoco gets "USA", possibly "Islands". In general I guess I'm not going to respond to each separate request -- if you're the first to speak for a particular album and it's your only choice, assume that you will get it. Knowing what a considerate bunch we are here in the music conference, my guess is that If you ask for a second cassette you'll probably get that too, unless someone else wants it enough to supercede your request. As they're just old cassette tapes I don't think there'll be a lot of that. Once we've more or less settled out who gets what, I guess we'll work out how to get things to each of you..
I'd like the Pere Ubu tape and the remaining King Crimson tape.
I'd love the INXS, if possible, please sir. :)
Thanks, Katie.
I think we'd (Jon and Julie) be interested in the Rocky Horror and Roxy Music tapes.
OK, then, if I've got things straight we've found homes for:
King Crimson -- "USA"
King Crimson -- "Islands"
King Crimson -- "Starless and Bible Black"
Desmond Dekker -- "16 Greatest Hits"
Pere Ubu -- "Cloudland"
Roxy Music -- "Stranded"
David Bowie -- "Lodger"
Rocky Horror Picture Show -- Motion Picture Soundtrack
INXS -- "Listen Like Thieves"
The following are still up-for-grabs:
Adrian Belew -- "Young Lions"
Elvis Costello -- "This Year's Model"
Elvis Costello -- "Spike"
Talking Heads -- "More Songs About Buildings and Food"
Graham Parker -- "Live! Alone in America"
Various Artists -- "This Is Charly [Records] Soul"
Luka Bloom -- "The Acoustic Motorbike"
I can highly recommend "Young Lions", "This Year's Model", "More Songs
About Buildings and Food" and "Live! Alone in America"
Of the remaining tapes,
+ "Spike" is just OK compared to other Elvis Costello albums.
+ the Charly Records Soul sampler has some good (and famous) tunes on it,
including Lee Dorsey's "Working in a Coal Mine", a track by the Meters,
and Chris Kenner's guaranteed-to-annoy "Land of a Thousand Dances"
(aka "Naa na na na na, na na na na, na na na, na na na..")
+ the Luka Bloom tape is, to the best of my knowledge, unopened
(so I can't say much more about it except I think it's acousticky
singer- songwritery stuff...)
Add to the list of available tapes:
Ricky Lee Jones -- "Flying Cowboys"
And I suspect there's still another box somewhere but can't say for
sure -- I might've given them away along with my previous car..
May I have the Talking Heads tape?
Is the Charly Records Soul Sampler still available? If so, I'll take it.
OK. Two more down, leaving us basically with: Adrian Belew Elvis Costello Rickie Lee Jones Graham Parker Luka Bloom
I'll go for the Good Elvis Costello. Amazingly, I don't have any of his! Luka Bloom is okay. I've got two of his cassettes, and they got moderate listening back when I first bought them. He's the younger brother of some reasonably big Irish musician, which was why I bought them. (I want to say like Christy Moore, but I don't recall. Their last names are totally different.)
Yes, it's Christy Moore. Luka Bloom started out as Barry Moore and when his first career didn't go anywhere he went for a new name to erase all recollection of his old identity.
Alright, as we're down to just a few remaining tapes, will people please get in touch with me to suggest a means of accomplishing any deliveries that have not yet been arranged?
I've e-mailed you with my current address. Thanks for making these available.
Things are clogged up as far as school right now. I will be in touch soon.
Jon, I have the tapes for you and Julie; send me your paper mail address.
will do..
Alright, so far I've sent off tapes to orinoco, omni, hematite, and lumen/bookworm (the latter, care of krj..) If the rest of you want your tapes you have to contact me to let me know how to get them to you.
btw, if I didn't mention it already, Ken, thanks =)
OK, it's been over a month since the rest of you laid claims to your tapes, yet I haven't heard a peep out of most of you.. Contact me to make arrangements for some sort of exchange or they go back up for grabs after the holidays.
Oops. I'll pick mine up after work on Tuesday if you want to mail me your address.
I have jon and julie's safe in the trunk of my car. I may not get them shipped until after the Christmas Crush.
that is OK-- we have been preoccupied with other things and I had forgotten about it until now.
I keep forgetting to call you Mike. I apologize.
("There's nothing we can do...and stop calling me Shirley")
You can put mine back up for grabs. My car's tape player (the only place I listen to tapes) is broken. Sorry.
Since I'm in the middle of a big push to get rid of things that I don't need, use, or want, and since it's been 90 days since I first posted the offer to give away the tapes, I took the remaining unclaimed cassettes downtown this afternoon and sold them to Encore [well, most of them..] I hope those of you who contacted me (and therefore received your tapes) have enjoyed them..
I've listened to my David Bowie tape at least three nights a week while working. =) It's great. Thanks again!
eek! didn't Ken contact you? oh well..
Jon, I gave the tapes that were supposed to go to you and Julie to krj sometime back in December.. I thought you'd received them by now.. Anyway, presumably Ken still has them. Regardless, they were not among the ones I sold..
Um, I forgot about these. Presumably they are still in my car trunk somewhere. I'm running way behind on shipping things out to people.
I was wondering what happened. I am patient; after all, Ken is doing us a favor =)
While packing I found some more tapes that I'd overlooked
in the first pass.. I also have one or two of the original
batch left (the ones that Encore didn't want..)
So: all of the following are up for grabs to anyone who wants them
enough to either contact me and pick them up OR pay postage..
(from the fist batch)
Adrian Belew -- Young Lions
enjoyable solo album from 80's era King Crimson
member and noted studio musician (Bowie, Zappa,
Talking Heads) Belew. Well worth hearing, if just
for the wonderfully goofy track featuring an obscure
radio personality known as "the Prophet Omega"
Graham Parker -- Live! Alone in America
Fine collection of performances from Brit songwriter
Parker, whose angry songs work well in the sparse
solo arrangements recorded on his 88? tour.
INXS -- Listen Like Thieves (Megan-- still want this?)
Decent album from 80's Australian band at the peak of
their popularity. Not a timeless classic, but still
enjoyable.
(new stuff)
David Bowie -- the Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust..
an absolute classic! terrific album! Ryko release,
so it contains bonus tracks that have now been deleted
from latest Bowie re-issues.
King Crimson -- In the Court of the Crimson King
their first. quintessential '70s prog-rock. ponder
the mystery of what "20th Century Schizoid Man" has
in common with the rest of the album..
Var. Artists -- Classic Instrumentals
various surf classics: Pipeeline, Wipeout, etc.
and other early '60s instrumental hits..
Soundtrack -- Repo Man
wonderful soundtrack with tracks from a "who's who"
of early 80's punk. Iggy, Black Flag, Circle Jerks..
Joe Jackson -- Blaze of Glory
a fine album -- one of his best. solid throughout,
with a number of terrific songs.
the Mekons -- F.U.N. '90 EP
honestly? not one of their best, but still
interesting enough..
Jerry Harrison -- Casual Gods
astonishingly dull post-Talking-Heads solo material.
I cannot remember *one* single thing about this album.
must be heard for its lameness to be believed.
I'm moving soon and I don't intend to take any of these with me, so
anything that's not claimed and on its way to a recipient by one week
from today is going to be sold or thrown out. Consequently there'll
be no messing about with "one tape to a customer" or any of that stuff.
Speak up for as many as you want up to and including all of them, then
hurry up and contact me to arrange pickup or delivery.
Oo, may I have the David Bowie tape?
Yes. If I happen to run into Ken anytime in the very near future I'll see if his Ann Arbor to East Lansing Music Delivery Shuttle service is still operating, otherwise you'll need to send me your address, privately, via e-mail.
I recommend the "Blaze of Glory" tape highly. We have this on CD already, so I will defer to anyone else who wants it, but I'll take it for a car tape if no one else desires it. And yes, I can deliver a tape to Wendy.
yes, it's an excellent album.
Aw man, she beat me to Ziggy Stardust....
there's plenty of other fine music left..
I know. Lemme just get a chance to finish sulking about this one :)
(I'll make you a copy if you like, Orinoco. :)
Just remember to follow the directions on the tape, which declare that the album is "To Be Played at Maximum Volume"..
I handed off the "Ziggy Stardust" cassette to Ken when he came over last Saturday night, so hopefully you should have either already received it or be receiving it soon.
(Yeah I just need to run over to his office one of these days. Thanks!)
I'll take the Belew. That's one of the ones I don't have. And I've heard him perform the piece with the good reverend. Big yucks!
Okey doke..
*gack* has it been along time.....*sigh* I had forgotten all about that tape.
Well, it's gone now -- anything that was still left when I moved (in other words, most of the tapes that people spoke for..) was delivered to Keesan before I left, to be divvied up among the Kiwanis volunteers or sold, whichever they preferred.
I don't blame you. :) I wasn't truely expecting it to be there.
Lumen and bookworm's tapes are still in my car trunk. :/
Whenever you get around to it.. we moved to Yakima a week or so ago, and haven't unpacked the stereo and TV yet. (We are anticipating a entertainment center from a friend.)
Sounds like I will need you to e-mail me a new address, then.
damn.. forgot about that fact.
You have several choices:
