I think I've found one already! :)

Try Whistling This, by Neil Finn.

Finn, for those of you who may or may not recognize the name, is/was the lead
singer for Crowded House, as well as writing alot of the words and music.
Since I absolutely adore Crowded House, I figured I'd take a gamble on Neil
Finn...and was very not dissappointed! It has some of the Crowded House feel
without soudning just like them...you can tell that it's not Crowded House.
As I get to know the album better, I'm sure that I'll rapture over it some
more, but...:)

Sure, we could do a mid-year list.

Gee, have there been any good cds lately? Lemme think... yes. Yield, by
Pearl Jam, was released this year. A splendid album. It also stands alone
as one of the only good pieces of music to hit the stands so far.

The Best of Gail Davies

"Signify" by Porcupine Tree is my favorite from this year. At least, I
_Think_ it came out this year...

Unfortunately my habit of logging the albums I get has fallen away,
so I can't scan over a list and see what jumps out.
My guesses would be:
  Gabriel Yacoub, BABEL
Lucinda Williams, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD
  possibly Old Blind Dogs, FIVE

Katie, who is Gail Davies?

I'd second Babel, definitley Five, and prolly Maddy Prior's Flesh and Blood.

Gail Davies is Mary-Chapin, Nanci, and K.T. all put together, and before
their time. I`ve never been able to find her albums, after desperately
seeking them after seeing her on Austin City Limits years ago, and all of a
sudden she has a Best Of album.
