Item 139: Lucinda and Nanci and Gillian and...

I'm really not sure what to call this one: The Women of Americana,
maybe? Gavin's "Americana" seems like a made-up category, but
there's several interesting women who straddle folk/country/rock
who have new albums out.

Right now I'm listening to some of the opening tracks from
Nanci Griffith's OTHER VOICES 2, her second album of
covers. So far I mostly like it, though I'm finding
Griffith's voice a little odd. I was wondering if she was
getting into serious vocal trouble, but Leslie doesn't hear anything
like that, and Leslie says that Griffith isn't singing flat.

The opening track, Richard Thompson's WALL OF DEATH, is pretty
close to the original Thompson arrangement from 1982; I was surprised
to see in the credits that this is one of the few tracks which
Richard Thompson does *not* play on.

There do seem to be a lot of tracks on which Nanci is not singing
the lead.

I worked with Nanci a couple weeks ago, while she was in town for a show.
She was a real pleasure to work with, which is in contrast to her reputation.

Gillian Welch has an Ark show coming up in September. Looks like she
is opening for Guy Clark, but I'm not sure.

I finally had a chance to open up Gillian's new album, HELL AMONG THE
YEARLINGS; on first listen I like it a lot, but I haven't been able
to write anything articulate about it yet.

I was really looking forward to it; but now that I've got it, I'm underwhelmed.
Perhaps after a 3rd or 4th listen...

I find today, while web-searching for other stuff, that Emmylou Harris
has slipped out a live album without much hoo-haw. The title is SPYBOY,
and it's drawn from the touring to support the WRECKING BALL album.

A Dallas News article from today, on a website, reports that sales of
WRECKING BALL were disappointing. That's a disappointment, since that
was such a smashingly good album.

OK, the Gillian Welch is growing on me...

np: Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt, WESTERN WALL: THE TUSCON SESSION.
I liked it enough on first play to press "play" again. Some really
nice electric guitar sounds from Bernie Leadon (Eagles) and
Ethan Johns (and the H-Bombs). Maybe it will only appeal to old
fossils like myself.
