Primus, March 1 (Sunday), at the State Theatre in Detroit.

#2 of 59 by raven on Mon Feb 16 21:26:25 1998:

Primus is still together? I thought Les Claypool was doing solo things now.

#3 of 59 by scott on Tue Feb 17 00:05:26 1998:

Primus released a new album just last fall! Check out the official website,
http://www.primussucks.com (gotta love their sense of humor!)

(Primus also recorded the theme music for South Park.)

Katie Geddes and Friends at the Green Wood Coffee House

Fri Mar 6, 8 PM. $8 at the door; desserts and coffee available.

All proceeds go to the Appalachian Service Project to help Appalachian
families repair their homes. We'll be doing some Appalachian type music
in the first set.

#7 of 59 by mcnally on Sun Mar 15 05:59:40 1998:

Towards the end of the month, March 28th, I think (but double-check if
you plan to attend..) the Skatalites will be appearing at the Majestic
Theater in Detroit. It's not my favorite concert venue but for one reason
or another it seems to be the place in SE Michigan that books ska acts so..

Anyway, the Skatalites, for those who are not familiar with them, are a
bona fide piece of music history. Their sound dominated the early ska
scene and immeasurably influenced the development of later Jamaican music
forms including rock steady, bluebeat, reggae, and dub.

That's not, however, the reason you should see them -- by far a better
reason to go is that even in their sixties these guys put on a rocking
good show unlikely to be matched by anything else you'll see this year.
Wear comfy shoes and be prepared to dance to the incredibly infectious
beat while you discover the work of these influential musical pioneers.

On April 2nd, at Cluth Cargo's, I htink, will be playing Marc Cohn. :)

#9 of 59 by albaugh on Fri Jul 10 15:24:18 1998:

It's not what I'd call a "concert", but driving to/from work on Hines Drive
I see banners for a "PolkaFest", to be held this weekend, Sa-Su July 11-12,
at the "Warrendale" section of Hines Park, which is "northwest" from the Outer
Drive intersection of Hines Drive, in what I assume is either Dearborn or
Dearborn Heights.

#10 of 59 by mcnally on Mon Aug 10 21:39:33 1998:

On August 23 the Magnetic Fields are scheduled to play a set at
the Magic Stick (above the Majestic on Woodward in Detroit..)
Tickets are only $6 if my info is correct..

I first encountered the Magnetic Fields last summer when I saw
them open for Yo La Tengo -- I was impressed enough to buy two
of their albums at the concert and several more shortly thereafter.
Their music won't appeal to everyone but if you have any affinity
for the "depressing songwriter" genre they're worth checking out..

#11 of 59 by mrmat on Tue Aug 11 02:43:58 1998:

August 15 at West Park, the Ann Arbor Free Music Festival.
Music starts at 1:00. Featuring Spider the Cat, Mondo Mod, Mr. Largebeat and
from Detroit, Treblehead. West Park band shell by the Seventh street entrance
to the park between Huron and Miller. The early weather forecast for Saturday
looks good.

#13 of 59 by scott on Mon Aug 31 11:13:59 1998:

This seems like a more ambitious schedule (bigger names) than I've seen in
the past.

#14 of 59 by katie on Mon Aug 31 12:25:34 1998:

That`s because I`m the booker this year. ;-)

#15 of 59 by mcnally on Tue Sep 1 08:47:16 1998:

  more power to you..

I bet that's a big help, too, when looking for gigs.. :-)

#16 of 59 by katie on Tue Sep 1 21:29:49 1998:

Not really. I`ve played 3 gigs there before and was already asked to open
the season this year well before I was asked to sign bands. I decided to
have a bigger name open the season, tho.

December 27th Barenaked Ladies, at VanAndel Arena in Grand Rapids
Not sure if tickets are still available. Good Luck!

#19 of 59 by scott on Sat May 22 13:50:37 1999:

Got a postcard from the California Guitar Trio. They will be playing at the
new Arborland Borders on Tuesday, May 1, 7:00 pm.

#20 of 59 by orinoco on Sat May 22 14:57:03 1999:

<nods> That could be worth catching. I liked then when I saw then opening
for King Crimson a year or two ago.

#21 of 59 by mcnally on Sat May 22 16:07:40 1999:

Presume that's either "Tuesday, June 1" or "Tuesday, May 1" of some
  future year..

#22 of 59 by scott on Sat May 22 20:27:53 1999:

Oops, June it is.

#23 of 59 by scott on Sun Jun 13 01:59:54 1999:

(seen on a poster on campus this afternoon)

Adrian Belew
June 21 (Monday) at the Seventh House in Pontiac, MI.

Tickets $15, Ticketma$ter.

#24 of 59 by orinoco on Sun Jun 13 17:00:51 1999:

Oooo...

#25 of 59 by scott on Tue Jul 27 15:54:44 1999:

This week at the Ark:
Wednesday, july 28: Adrian Belew
Thursday, July 29: Aimee Mann

Wow, I'm actually going to (try) to go to two consecutive nights at the Ark!
Even more amazing is that it has been years since I went there, and that was
the old location.

#26 of 59 by anderyn on Wed Jul 28 02:25:06 1999:

It's a neat venue, now, though many miss the ambience of the old Ark.
I do not. I think the old bathrooms sucked and so did the prevalence of
cigarette smoke around the concession area. Now, at least, I don't get
an asthma attack just by serving people popcorn.

Saturday night -- Mustards' Retreat 25th anniversary show. With special
guest (I know but I'm sworn to secrecy.)

#27 of 59 by scott on Sat Feb 19 00:00:29 2000:

Aimee Mann wil be appearing on Conan O'Brien tonight.

#28 of 59 by goose on Sat Feb 19 02:58:27 2000:

She is quite a talent who is being quite ignored by the music industry..when
she visited our studio back in Nov(?) for a taping of Acoutic Cafe she was
without a record label.

#29 of 59 by mcnally on Sat Feb 19 04:19:23 2000:

She did most (all?) of the music on the "Magnolia" soundtrack,
which I was listening to in SKR the other day. It sounded pretty
good, and I think I'd probably enjoy one of her albums, although
preferably one without Three Dog Night covers.. What's a good
  starting place?

#30 of 59 by scott on Sat Feb 19 13:34:14 2000:

"Whatever" is still my favorite; first solo CD. Go to
http://www.aimeemann.com and there will be a link somewhere to buy it for
$9.99...

#31 of 59 by katie on Sat Feb 19 17:40:43 2000:

Beatle Fest is tonight at The Lonely Hearts Club at 211 E Washington in
Ann Arbor. Enjoy 15 local performers each covering 2 Beatles tunes. The
songs allowed are Beatles', solo Beatles', and Beatles-related groups'
(such as Travelling Wilburys). NO Yoko.
Some of the performers are: Dick Siegel, K.C. Groves, Brian Lillie, Katie
Geddes and The Usual Suspects, Jim Roll, Chris Buhalis, and Delta 88.

$8 at the door; proceeds to benefit Ozone House. Doors at 7; music starts
at 8 pm. Katie and The Suspects lead off.

#32 of 59 by mcnally on Sat Feb 19 19:28:19 2000:

That sounds fun, wish I didn't already have plans..

#33 of 59 by tpryan on Sun Feb 20 17:35:42 2000:

Oops, I was trying to remeber what I was tempted to do last night.
I was also tempted by concert at Momma's Coffe house.

#34 of 59 by scott on Sun Apr 2 15:00:10 2000:

Dunno if I'm going, but:
Tony Levin and the California Guitar Trio
Thursday, April 13
Magic Bag, in Ferndale.

#35 of 59 by orinoco on Sun Apr 2 18:19:33 2000:

Hrm....I should check if they're making it out to Chicago...

#36 of 59 by scott on Sun Apr 2 20:24:13 2000:

According to Levin's home page
http://www.papabear.com/tlev.shtml

They'll be appearing in Chicago on April 12th at "Martyr's".

#37 of 59 by mcnally on Mon Apr 3 18:06:33 2000:

Last time I saw them the California Guitar Trio put on a good show.
It wasn't even close to being as amazing as the League of Crafty
Guitarists show I saw at the Power Center way back when, but it should
  still be well worth going..

#38 of 59 by krj on Wed Apr 12 18:06:10 2000:

This is for mcnally and gnat. The Magnetic Fields are going to tour.
Selected dates: 4/22 New Orleans, Tipitina's Uptown
                  5/25 Pontiac, MI, Seventh House

#39 of 59 by gnat on Wed Apr 12 21:42:12 2000:

Alas, I no longer live in Michigan... but thank you anyway. :)

My fellow Portlanders the Minders and Elliott Smith are going on
tour together - they're coming to St. Andrews in Detroit on May 24th.
It should be a great show.

#40 of 59 by mcnally on Thu Apr 13 00:47:55 2000:

And it's been weeks since I've been in New Orleans.. I'm now in Seattle,
  ostensibly for good.

I've seen the Magnetic Fields twice and would gladly go and see them again,
especially in the wake of "69 Love Songs".. If anyone who's unfamiliar with
the band is feeling adventurous, I'd recommend a trip to Pontiac. I'd never
even heard of them before the first time I saw them (they opened for another
band I love, Yo La Tengo) and I still enjoyed their performance enough to
buy two of their CDs at the concert..

#41 of 59 by otaking on Thu Apr 13 02:12:35 2000:

Re #39: I had no clue that you moved Natalie!?! Where do you live now?

#42 of 59 by diznave on Thu Apr 13 04:05:54 2000:

The Roots are giving a free concert at the UF Bandshell this Sunday. I really
dig these guys. They're definitely on the positive hip-hop tip. Their songs
are imaginitive and though provoking. They actually play their own
instruments, and keep the sampling to a bare minimum (that is, if they sample
at all). As you listen to them rap.you'll notice a total lack of words like
'b**ch' and 'n**ga'. I think we'll take the dogs out with us and maybe brng
a picnic. Word up.

#43 of 59 by gnat on Thu Apr 13 19:53:19 2000:

re. #41 - I live in Portland, OR, now... mere miles from Ursula Le Guin!

#44 of 59 by mcnally on Fri Apr 14 00:21:41 2000:

re #43: I passed through Portland yesterday. Seems like a neat town..

#45 of 59 by scott on Tue Jun 20 00:46:33 2000:

I'm going to miss it, but Top of the Park is going to have the Red Elvises
on July 4th. I'm pretty annoyed because I'll be out of town, although there's
sufficient compensation in the form of being with my (long distance) SO.

The Red Elvises are a group of (mostly) Russian musicians who've managed to
fuse Russian folk music with early rock and roll. They're supposed to be a
pretty hip live act, too. I'd recommend this show highly, especially since
it's TOP.

#46 of 59 by other on Tue Jun 20 17:52:06 2000:

All right! I'll be there!

#47 of 59 by kewy on Sat Jul 1 22:36:39 2000:

Richard Buckner is playing the Ark July 12.
He's a great folky singer-song writer sort of guy. Quite good on the
guitar too.
I saw him live in Toronto back in October when I was just looking
around for something to do one night, he's definitely worth going to
see, a nice guy to boot. He mentioned playing at the Ark sometimes,
and said he really liked it there, so yeah, go see him. Tickets are 10-
15$

Also worth checking out:
Matthew Good Band is playing Bayfest in Sarnia on July 15. I've never
seen them live, but I've liked all of their recorded stuff that I've
heard. They won this year's Juno award for best rock group and best
rock album I believe (Juno=Canadian music award). Tickets are 8$CN

#48 of 59 by tpryan on Sat Jul 1 23:23:14 2000:

John Sebastian and the J Band at the Ark on July 5th interests me.

#49 of 59 by scott on Sun Jul 16 00:24:20 2000:

I got a flyer in the mail today about the "National Folk Festival" to be held
August 11-13 in E. Lansing. It's free, and has several stages. I'm not
going to type in the list of performers, but it looks pretty impressive. Not
just your usual list of boring gittar-and-poetry folkies, but Golpel steel
guitar, Lakota hoop dance, Hawaiian, polka, Arabic, quite a diverse list.

Details at www.nff.net.

#50 of 59 by anderyn on Tue Jul 18 01:14:31 2000:

And solas is going to be there too! Yes!

#51 of 59 by krj on Wed Feb 21 21:52:47 2001:

Was it raven who was the Kristen Hersh fan? She's doing a solo
acoustic tour of Borders stores. Portland OR on March 7,
Ann Arbor on March 27.
Info from www.livedaily.com.

#52 of 59 by krj on Fri Apr 27 02:36:40 2001:

Oooh! Oooh! Ooooh!

I just found this listing in today's Ann Arbor News:
Marlee MacLeod, Friday April 27 (that's tomorrow or tonight, depending
on when you are reading this), Crazy Wisdom Bookstore, 114 S. Main
Ann Arbor, 8:30-10:30. FREE SHOW!!!

I *love* Marlee MacLeod. Sort of country, sort of folk/rock, with a quirky
voice that just pulls me in. She also plays her own lead electric guitar
on the recordings. She plays with a 4 or 5 piece band on her CDs, but
I have no idea if someone is paying for the whole band to tour with her.
I've enjoyed each of her four CDs.

She has a web page at http://www.marleemacleod.com

#53 of 59 by krj on Fri Apr 27 04:29:29 2001:

The web page says this will be a solo show.

#54 of 59 by krj on Sat Apr 28 05:16:46 2001:

I put the Marlee MacLeod review in item:15. Saturday night, Crazy
Wisdom is hosting local blues guitarist Rollie Tussing III. I caught
the tail end of his set at Top of the Park last summer and was
quite impressed, so I might see if I can make it back to the bookstore
for the second night in a row. I hope to start getting e-mail with
the Crazy Wisdom concert schedule.

#55 of 59 by happyboy on Sat Apr 28 15:36:11 2001:

that should be good. i play his cd in my classroom
once in awhile.

real quote from one of the kids:

"This is some real good blues, who is that OLD DUDE?"

tell him if you want, ken...also ask him if he has
any tips for playing with those damn fingerpicks!

#56 of 59 by katie on Sun Apr 29 02:55:53 2001:

There are a few Melanie tickets left for this Friday, May 4 at Green
Wood. Call 734-665-8558 to reserve.

#57 of 59 by krj on Sun Jul 8 18:22:16 2001:

Summer is supposed to be the time nothing happens, right?
My overloaded dance card for this week looks like this:

Sunday: final night of Top of the Park
Monday: Michelle Shocked at the Ark
Tuesday: Lou Killen at the Ark (British traditional singer)
Wednesday: still open
Thursday: Te Vaka (Polynesian band) at Downtown Home and Garden (??!?!?)
Friday: Two chamber operas, Bernstein's "Trouble in Tahiti" and
Menotti's "The Telephone," Arbor Opera Theater.
Saturday: Concert of Colors in Detroit, including the French band Lo'Jo
          who I adore.

And there are also three movies, all expecting to leave town after
Thursday, which I want to see. Aieeeee!

(I expect Lou Killen and the Concert of Colors to get squeezed out.)

#58 of 59 by remmers on Mon Jul 9 04:19:22 2001:

You don't appear to have next Sunday, July 15 booked. I recommend
James Dapogny and the Rhythm Kings, appearing at the Firefly Club
from 5 to 8 pm. It's a 10-piece jazz band that does 1920s and 1930s
stuff. They appear weekly and I caught them tonight. They're
excellent. They'll also appear at the Art Fair, I believe on
Wednesday July 18.

#59 of 59 by krj on Sat Jul 14 00:26:01 2001:

Nothing like a few cancellations to clear the schedule (resp:57).
Te Vaka cancelled on Thursday, and the chamber opera program was
cancelled tonight. I suppose this theoretically leaves me free
for the Concert of Colors festival in Detroit, but that one is
still an all-day commitment and I need some down time before
Art Fair...
