Grex Music2 Conference

Item 109: Music conf gathering?

Entered by orinoco on Mon Jan 19 03:21:07 1998:

Okay, the idea has been drifting around for some time of a music conference
gathering; it's time to stop muttering and do something. So, I'm thinking
we should either arrange to show up en masse at GNO now that it's up and
running again, or try to find some other time that people are free so we can
meet then.
So, what do people's schedules look like in the next few weeks? Does anyone
have suggestions for a meeting place?

Actually, if anyone is free during the coming week, my shcedule is pretty wide
open then. Otherwise, chances are I'd have to stick to weekends, or perhaps
Fridays.

Only if you come to Seattle, heh heh. I'm two hours away from there and it's
the only place anyone from A2 would know how to get to in my neck of the
woods.

Ahem. I think they could find Spokane. :)

Spokane? It's the same distance and I guess it would be better..I'd just stay
with grandparents in the South Hill area. (Not like Spokane is that
exciting, though..)

Are you kidding? Boredom capital of the universe, but I drift.

Boredom capital of the universe? You ain't been out here or various places
in Montana, obviously. You evidently haven't run Bloomsday, either. Spokane
is a *kick* during the Bloomsday rush. It's a sleepy metropolitan city, 'tis
true, but many people like it because of that.

Yes, boredom capital of the universe.
I don't know where 'out here' is. I've been to several places in Montana.
I have not 'run' Bloomsday, but I would not say having a bunch of people
come to your town from out of town to run a race is a *kick*.
Now....
Let me say just because *I* happen to find it to be more boring than
practically any other place I've been does not me you or anybody else
has to.
Let's return to the actual subject of this item.

I had a bizarre idea in a dream last night about this. The idea was to set
a microphone, then everybody puts on headphones and listens at *extreme* gain
levels. What sort of interesting sounds are lurking in a quiet heouse?
Actually, in the light of day this sounds kinda dumb.

It could be interesting in a house with stema heat & radiators. I always
wanted to sample that sound and use it for percussion.

I could attach a contact mic to the wall of my all-metal house...

(you'll want to make sure that no one wanders into the house during the
listening, so as not to damage the listeners' hearing.) ;)

Didn't cage do somethings along those lines? It wouldn't surprise me...

Apparently, if you put a contact mike on some kinds of ordinary objects,
you'll get some kind of sound similar to the 'ocean' you hear in a seashell.

Return to the actual subject of this item? Did the conversation drift to a
different item? I thought we were discussing a gathering of Grexers..

Ok, never mind..I'm having trouble reading with no scrollback..
'Out here' is southeastern and south central Washington state. I could
mention the Hanford Reservation (nuclear-related), but I'm not sure too many
people know what that is. I could mention Pasco, since its name was taken
from a South American city, but I'll bet even fewer would know where that is.
That's where my folks live.
Where I'm going to school..just a little state university noted for its
education program..is in Ellensburg. More people would probably be familiar
with nearby Roslyn, filming site of the TV series "Northern Exposure."

If Mike and Morena would ever visit again, I'd just arrange to visit them..at
least Mike has family in Olympia..

I have friends down here in Florida who own a farm, in case you would all like
to migrate south for a gathering.
