As I type, my almost-finished bowl of shredded wheat and sliced
bananas is by my side. Still about half a cup of coffee left. This
is my "first breakfast". In a couple of hours I'll have a "second
breakfast" consisting of a bagel and a glass of orange juice.

This is my typical breakfast, although the particular cereal and
fruit topping varies from one day to the next.

How do you stay so trim, John, eating two breakfasts? Do you eat two lunches,
also, or do you eliminate another meal?

#33 of 91 by remmers on Fri Aug 2 14:24:12 1996:

I wouldn't say that I'm all that trim, but note that my two
breakfasts combined have fewer calories than a lot of people's
one breakfast.

#34 of 91 by popcorn on Sun Aug 4 15:19:44 1996:

Also, they say that if you're watching your weight it's better to eat lots
of small meals than a small number of big ones.

#35 of 91 by remmers on Mon Aug 5 13:56:33 1996:

Right, and that's what I try to do.

#36 of 91 by chelsea on Mon Aug 5 22:04:56 1996:

Can we talk about bummer breakfasts here? I love Zingerman's. I'm a
loyal Zinger-person. But last Sunday I showed up for my Raisin-Pecan
toast with light cream cheese, OJ, coffee, and two violists playing their
viols, only to fine they were out of OJ, out of light cream cheese, the
coffee pot was dry and the violists were nowhere to be heard.

Life went on.

#37 of 91 by remmers on Tue Aug 6 10:51:17 1996:

...but only after we lodged an official complaint.

#38 of 91 by denise on Wed Aug 14 11:58:42 1996:

I miss my good Zingerman's bread!! The last time I was in town,
I brought a couple loaves to bring home [including the raisin pecan
which I had never tried before]. I had put some of the bread
in the freezer for later... but now that later is gone, I'm in
withdrawl!! Guess I'm going to have to place an order sometime soon!
[Speaking of which, I have a couple friends here in Durham that are
from AA, one of which used to work at Zing's!]

#39 of 91 by coyote on Thu Aug 15 20:37:38 1996:

Zingerman's bread! Yum! I *love* their chocolate cherry bread, and Italian
bread is yummy too. In fact I think I've liked all the breads that I've tried
there, though those two are the ones that stick out in my mind most.

#40 of 91 by otter on Sat Aug 17 23:53:21 1996:

Breakfast? Can't eat for an hour after taking AM medicine, and I'm at work
by then. (Un)fortunately, there is a Sweetwater's Donut Mill right next door,
so I usually have a plain bagel and tomato juice around 9am, then a piece of
fruit between then and lunch.
Weekends usually involve a big farmer's omelette (sans meat).

#41 of 91 by eeyore on Sun Oct 13 14:56:52 1996:

denise: zing's does do orders...meaning they can ship bread to you...:)

#42 of 91 by e4808mc on Sun Oct 13 23:00:06 1996:

Zingerman's has a wonderful mail order catalog. I used it myself when I was
lost in Kansas for a couple years.

#43 of 91 by denise on Fri Oct 18 22:38:35 1996:

Actually, I do have their mail order catalog [Zingerman's] but just haven't
ordered anything yet. But I will when I get back...!! Since I can't actually
BE at Zing's, this should be the next best thing. :-) Thanks for the
reminder!!!

#44 of 91 by chelsea on Sat Oct 19 10:14:24 1996:

Well, I don't mean rub it in or anything but... ;-)

I'll be at Zing's, on the patio, enjoying the pre-game
chaos, at about 11:30 a.m. I'll have a capp for you!

#45 of 91 by denise on Sun Oct 20 00:41:39 1996:

Mmm, thanks, that was delicious! Especially having just finished
my workout this morning! :-)

This next week is going to be a busy week for me-between planning
on seeing the peak color change in the mountains early in the week and then
having to work 3 out of 4 days when I get back, I'm currently planning
on placing an rder for early NEXT week! :-) [Now to go get my
catalog and start salivating over the pages!]

#46 of 91 by abchan on Sun Dec 22 16:29:42 1996:

I haven't been eating breakfast lately because of lack of funds, but hopefully
that will change in a few months...

#47 of 91 by otter on Sun Dec 22 17:48:25 1996:

Try an apple for breakfast, or toast with jam. You mentioned trying to lose
weight in an earlier item, which means you should not skip breakfast. You need
to get your metabolism running, and having something in the morning should
keep your hunger from taking complete control by lunchtime, too.

#48 of 91 by eprom on Fri Nov 4 02:49:51 2005:

check this breakfast out:

http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/0744/

It's a Swanson Hungry-man breakfast, which proudly proclaims its' "over 1 lb
of food". Some "nutrition" facts:

Total fat 64g (98% dv)
Cholesterol 690mg(231% dv)
sodium 2090mg (87% dv)

yum!

#49 of 91 by mary on Fri Nov 4 10:43:08 2005:

How many calories? Although just the fat content alone makes it
an unwise choice except for those who might be digging their own
grave, all day long.

Jim says he eats more like 3000 calories a day. Today the vitamin E study
nutritionist advised him to eat more protein and calcium and less olive and
sesame oil. I think he simply guessed wrong at the amounts he reported eating
- 1 oz olive oil, 8 oz rice, 4 oz beans -more like 1/2 oz oil, 16 oz rice,
8 oz beans. And his cholesterol is too low (140 total, similarly wrong for
HDL and LDL). She suggested eating cheese.

Eggs

#55 of 91 by keesan on Mon Nov 7 18:55:43 2005:

For breakfast Jim cooked the lima beans I had soaked, peeled some cooked
potatoes, and fried up radishes, cauliflower, onions, brocolli, carrots with
peanuts to put on top. Filling. More left for lunch.

#56 of 91 by tod on Mon Nov 7 18:59:40 2005:

I had a roast beef sandwich for breakfast..with lettuce, tomato, provolone,
and wheat bread. Lunch will be greek salad and probably 2 hardboiled eggs.

#57 of 91 by jadecat on Mon Nov 21 15:14:11 2005:

Breakfast today was Honey Bunchs of Oats with almond slivers with fat
free milk. :)

earlier in the morning.

Oatmeal and corn on the cob and yellow cherry tomatoes and grapefruit juice
and we left the cooked cabbage and onions for lunch.

#61 of 91 by slynne on Thu Aug 17 20:29:34 2006:

I had eggs, tomato, greenpepper, onion, and feta cheese wrapped in a
whole wheat lawash. And coffee.

#62 of 91 by jadecat on Thu Aug 17 20:42:19 2006:

Breakfast was Frosted Mini-Wheats and milk. oooh, exciting! ;)

resp:61 That sounds really tasty (minus the green pepper)

#63 of 91 by mynxcat on Fri Aug 18 19:18:47 2006:

Today it was home-made Indian style tea, followed by a whole wheat bagel and
cream cheese, another cup of tea (this time, teabag brewed) and a chocolate
muffin two hours later. I've been decadent.

for lunch.

That Indian chai tea is good, I bet!

#67 of 91 by mary on Sat Aug 19 13:31:51 2006:

The last meal I cooked was walleye, served with a cold cracked wheat
salad and steamed asparagus.

I've been playing around with fish lately, trying to figure out what works
and what doesn't. My favorite catfish recipe involves a dredge in
cajun-style seasoning then a quick bake at 425 degrees. Salmon I like
marinated in asian-style seasonings and broiled. Walleye (or other tender
white non-oily filets) I've not been so happy with despite trying a number
of techniques.

So the other night I gave walleye another shot, this time going back to
basics. I simply sauted it in a tablespoon each of olive oil and butter.
When the fish was done I removed it then added a little fresh lemon juice
and chopped parsley to the pan, scraping up the bits, then drizzled it
over the fish. Too simple, but it worked.

Dinner was 10 minutes, start to serve. Sometimes, that's important.

#68 of 91 by glenda on Sun Aug 20 02:04:20 2006:

Pssst, Mary, this is the breakfast item, but your dinner sounds yummy and I
really don't like fish.

#69 of 91 by mynxcat on Mon Aug 21 15:36:25 2006:

That sounds like a delicious and easy recipe - I should try it (though I'm
not sure I know what a walley looks like)

Skipped breakfast and am having a Subway sandwich for lunch. Also kipped the
Indian chai tea as we've just moved (yesterday) and I neglected to make sure
we had basic breakfast items on hand :/

#70 of 91 by slynne on Mon Aug 21 16:27:34 2006:

I had pancakes and sausage links for breakfast today. I have this same
breakfast almost every Monday.

#71 of 91 by mynxcat on Mon Aug 21 16:36:47 2006:

I wish I had the time to make a breakfast like that. Well I would if I woke
up earlier instead of 30 minutes before the time I'm supposed to be in at
work.

#72 of 91 by slynne on Mon Aug 21 18:21:01 2006:

Haw. I didnt make that breakfast. We have a cafeteria at work that
serves breakfast. I always eat breakfast here at work.

It occurred to me recently that I have always worked someplace where I
could eat breakfast so I almost never eat breakfast at home except on
weekends.

#73 of 91 by mynxcat on Mon Aug 21 18:46:06 2006:

My cafeteria serves up bagels and cream cheese. I'm usually way too late for
their breakfast.

#74 of 91 by keesan on Tue Aug 22 02:19:24 2006:

Jim usually makes oatmeal for breakfast. It has gotten pretty boring since
berry season ended. Today he shook some apples out of a tree.

#75 of 91 by klg on Tue Aug 22 03:02:01 2006:

(and I always thought you supported non-violence.)

#76 of 91 by mary on Tue Aug 22 12:29:33 2006:

Ack, sorry about #67. I thought I was in another item.

In a few minutes I'll be poaching eggs and serving 'em with
English muffins and a cup of berries. That's a five minute
breakfast.

#77 of 91 by klg on Tue Aug 22 16:42:52 2006:

How do you poach. In swirling hot h2o?

#78 of 91 by mary on Tue Aug 22 19:59:04 2006:

No, I'm too sleepy at breakfast to try to deal with free-swimming
egg whites. I have this little three-compartment tray thingie that
sits in a small, covered pan of simmering water.

Like this, but for only three eggs:

Three easy monthly payments of $4.95? And when you're not poaching, you
could serve condiments.

#80 of 91 by mary on Wed Aug 23 12:18:54 2006:

And here you had me all jacked thinking you were sincerely
interested. It's like, no prom for me, again.

#82 of 91 by denise on Sat Sep 1 23:06:45 2007:

Here's an interesting breakfast recipe that I just came across [from the
cdc website mentioned in 0 that I'm finally checking out]:

Apple Sausage

1. Mix one large finely chopped apple with a pound of lean ground turkey
or chicken.

2. Season with sage and rosemary and shape into breakfast sausage
patties.

3. Cook in skillet over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes on each side
until meat reaches an internal temperature of 165 F.

#83 of 91 by cmcgee on Sat Sep 1 23:13:09 2007:

I do a version of that for a hearty camping breakfast.

Leave the apples out of the sausage mix. Brown the sausage, and then
saute apple slices with it for the last 10 minutes or so.

#84 of 91 by slynne on Tue Sep 4 23:27:20 2007:

That sounds yummy

#85 of 91 by mynxcat on Wed Nov 28 19:38:01 2007:

Breakfast these past few days has been blueberry muffin with tea

#86 of 91 by void on Thu Nov 29 06:01:37 2007:

Breakfast for me is usually juice, a banana, and either a bowl of cereal
or a couple of Clif bars. We just picked up a 1.5-quart slow cooker to
use for making overnight steel-cut oats, but haven't used it yet.

#87 of 91 by cmcgee on Thu Nov 29 14:12:21 2007:

a suggestion on the overnight oats.

I find putting the oats and water in a small pyrex custard cup gives me
a better texture.

You might try stacking them if they won't fit comfortably side-by-side.

#88 of 91 by denise on Fri Nov 30 02:00:06 2007:

I've recently gotten back into eating oatmeal again. My dad gave me
some blueberries today-so I'll be adding them to my next several bowls
of the oatmeal. :-)

And am also going through some clementines, too.

[other than this stuff, I haven't been eating very healthy lately and
I'm really beginning to feel it.]

I love that! I just wish they had names for what some of them are eating.

#91 of 91 by denise on Fri Dec 21 18:01:59 2007:

For whatever reason, a few of the photos made me laugh. :-) There's a
number of them I'd love to try but a few, well, let's just say that they
don't look at all appetizing and thus, I'd pass on breakfast.

I wonder how many of these breaksfasts were on weekdays and how many
were on the weekend? And thus, how much of a difference would there be
in what these people would've had?

Cool website and photos!
