Probably if someone lists "job" or "work" they are referring to the sense of accomplishment (Maslow's 'self actualization') they get from whatever it is that they do.

Last time I ran the survey, it gave me only *one* choice, no way to add comments... Damn hard to put down one top priority without it sounding like your overriding goal in life.

Hmm... I've been doing a lot of thinking about my last response, and decided I'm not very happy with it. The ranking I gave things in there are in the order I allocate my time in in everyday life. Still, if there were a situation where at a particular time my family really needed me, and work really needed me, there is no question that my family would come first.
Using your list it would in my case be: Friends Family Various Work in spending actual time: Work friends various Family Zis is not very good
I'd have trouble deciding on this one -- I mean, I'm the sole support of my family, so choosing between family and job would be hard. One depends on the other. And my family consists of a son living with me, a son living in Europe, and a husband who is a newcoewr to the family unit. What they need from me is very different. So family wouldn't work as a single unit. *sigh* I guess I juggle priorities and whoever needs me most right now comes to the top of the queue.

Interesting question, and a strange ordering of the list that inspired the
opening poster back in 1995. Ultimately, a numbered list is inadequate to
explain the whats and whys that make a person who they are, but here is my
personal take.
#1. Jesus Christ. I don't want to sound like the Church Lady, but He makes
and gives meaning to all the other items, including me.
#2. Wife and children. Almost all of the concrete things I do for #1 are
expressed here and in the other items.
#3. Church. Includes both church friends and communal prayer and
worship. Practically, on a case-by-case basis, this varies a lot,
from #3 down to below #6.
#4. Other family
#5. Job. As a means of materially supporting the rest. A list of
"sources of self-satisfaction" would be the same except for this
item dropping to the bottom.
#6. Friends
#7. Hobbies. PROGRAMMING!
#8. Cyber-friends. Sorry guys, you're wonderful people, but just a
stream of text makes a weak connection. Cyber-fiends I have met in
real life, or with whom I've had a lot of on-line history get
promoted to #6.
A lot of conflict and exceptions in gray areas where priorities conflict
between adjacent categories.
resp:13 bubu's survey (and his whole directory) are long gone. A survey generator would be fun if there were a few more of us using Fronttalk. resp:41 I note that all the above categories represent positive motivations, things I want to do and enjoy spending time on, with the exception of work. There are also other categories that have neutral or negative motivation that still require time and effort, such as complying with laws, support for state/nation/country, or helping strangers. Some of these may derive from the positive enumerated priorities above.
Your list is, I believe, spot on both in content and in order. Even if you were to take out #1 and #3 for the non-religious (or replace them with some other religious form), this list would be an exceptional guide to living a joy-filled life.
