I can't find the original post, but someone proposed this game several weeks ago: http://barelybad.com/20_questions.htm Let's play! In addition to the rules on the linked page, I propose we conduct ourselves as follows: 1. The game will be played in rounds. 2. The questioner who guesses the target with the 20th or earlier question wins the round and the right to start the next round as answerer, or pass the right to someone else. 3. If the target has not been guessed by the 20th question, the answerer wins the round and may start a new round continuing as answerer or pass the right to someone else. 4. Questions will be numbered accoring to the order they appear as response items. Questions posted before a previous question has been answered will be ignored. 5. Any Grex member may join the game as a questioner at any time. ***** ROUND 1 ***** Answerer: papa222 responses total.
Question 1: Is it animal, vegetable, or mineral? (Later questions must be answerable with "yes" or "no". Questions may also be answered with "I don't know," or "I can't answer.")
Answer 1: animal
Q 2: Does it eat bamboo
A 2: I don't know.
Is it a fellow human?
A 3: Yes.
Q4) Is it Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup?
A 4: No.
Are they male?
A 5: Yes.
Q 6: Is this male human that may or may not eat bamboo currently alive?
A 6: Yes.
Q 7: Does this person have a wikipedia page?
A 7: Yes.
Is this person Donald Trump?
A 8: No. I wouldn't ask specific people until I'd narrowed the category down. YMMV.
Q 9: is he an entertainer by profession?
A 9: No.
Q 10: is he more associated with morality than with innovation?
A 10: Yes.
Half-way there?
(excuse blank post, hit wrong keystrokes while thinking on 11th question. this game is fun)
To review: - Male human, currently living - Not known as a bamboo eater, but may consume it - Has a wikipedia page - Not Donald Trump, not Geoff Hurst - Not an entertainer by profession - More associated with morality than with innovation
Cornel West?
A 11: No.
Q 12: is he a proponent of either buddhism or capitalism?
A 12: No.
Q 13: is he known for a style of dress similar to that of pope francis?
A 13: Yes.
Is it Pope Benedict XVI, aka Joseph Ratzinger?
A 14: No.
Is it Bishop Desmond Tutu?
Archbishop* ;-)
Oops, my bad.
A 15: No.
Is it Demis Roussos? The Greek, kaftan wearing, singer.
it's not an entertainer. Q16: Is it Pope Francis?
A 16 (Is it Demis Roussos?): No. A 17 (Is it Pope Francis?): YES!!! nydel wins the round, and the right to be the next answerer. Congratulations!
woohoo! everyone was using up my 'make-sure-it's-who-you-thougt' answers so i decided to just go for it :P ... shall we start with animal mineral etc question or do y'all wanna select the first question for round 2? (ps that round was a lot of fun, thanks papa & everyone)
just for fun, my next question when i was waiting was going to be "is it likely that he has ever looked directly at pope francis's face?" :) of course the answer would have either been "yes [it's pope francis indeed]" or "no [after which i would think it was a socialist politician]" ... love this game.
* mixed up the yes & no in the above post, sorry, tired. idea was it's not possible for pope francis to look at pope francis's face, you get it.
re #42 Good work!
Can't Pope Francis look in the mirror and see Pope Francis's face?
Great job nydel!
Well Done nydel!
I think looking in a mirror would not count as directly seeing his face. nydel: I appreciate the commentary implicit in your hypothetical questions. Animal-vegetable-or-mineral is the traditional first question as well as a very logical place to start, though not absolutely required by the rules. It is the only non-yes-or-no question allowed.
Kicking-off the new round ... ***** ROUND 2 ***** Answerer: nydel
Q 1: Is it animal, vegetable, or mineral?
A 1: animal
Q 2: Is it a human being?
A 2: yes.
Is it a male human being?
A 3: yes.
Q 4: Is he currently alive?
A 4: yes.
Q 5: Does he live primarily in North America?
A 5: yes.
Q 6: Is he someone that people generally take seriously, rather than someone who primarily entertains?
A 6: no.
Breaking my own rule and cutting to the chase ... Q 7: Is he The Donald (President Donald J. Trump)?
A 7: no.
*bump* (I think it's poor form for the same questioner to ask twice in a row.)
Q 8: is he more theatrical than musical?
A 8: yes.
Q 9: Is he better for known for film or television performances than for stage performances?
A 9: yes.
To review: - Human male, currently living, mostly in north american - Primarily an entertainer, more theatrical than musical - Better known for film/tv - Not Donald Trump
10: Is he on a current tv show?
A 10: no.
Q 11: Is he primarily a television actor?
A 11: yes.
(Poor form or not, after a week's wait I'm asking another question.) Q 12: Has he been the star of a TV series for which new episodes have been released (or broadcast) for public viewing after Jan. 1, 2000?
A 12: yes.
I'd help more, but I haven't watched TV in any appreciable amount since the late 90s ... but heck, I'll through out Q 13: is the series he is most known for primarily considered a sci-fi series?
A 13: no.
Q 14: Has he been the star of a TV series for which new episodes have been released or broadcast for public viewing after Jan. 1, 2010?
A 14: yes.
Recap hrough Q 14: - Currently living man based in North America. - An entertainer best known as a TV actor. - Not appearing in a current series, but has starred in a series that broadcast new episodes after Jan. 1, 2010. - Not Donald Trump.
Correct. A gentle hint may be in order(no wordplay or subtext): everyone knows of this person i.e. it's not obscure and not knowing about tv is irrelevant.
Charlie Sheen?
A 15: YES! Charlie Sheen is the answer! Way to go Cross!!! CLAPCLAPCLAP :) You are too smart for my subtle "hints" lol nicely done!
Congratulations, Lord Cross.
#winning!
That means it's cross' turn to ask the next question, right??
I'll pass; all my questions are lame. :-)
If cross doesn't object, I nominate tfurrows to be our next questioner.
No objection from me!
Ok, but give me a day or two to think of something reasonably interesting :)
This is day two, tfurrows ;)
you are up to plate tfurrows! :)
Ok, here's goes nothing. Q1: Animal, mineral, vegetable? A1: Animal
This response has been erased.

A4: No.
Did he live in the 20th century?
A5: Yes.
Q6: Was he a scientist?
A6: No.
Was he a politician?
A7: No.
Was he an entertainer?
A8: No.
Q9: Was he an athlete?
A9: No. (at 10 I'll perhaps give a hint?)
Summary thus far: Male human being deceased but lived during 20th century. Not scientist, politician, entertainer, or athlete. Q10: Was he a businessman?
Was it Steve Jobs?
A10: No. A11: No. (hint: he lived during the 20th century, but also during the 19th century)
Q12: Was he an inventor?
Q12: No.
Q13: Was he a religious figure?
A13: No.

A15: No.
Q16: Did he write poetry?
A16: No.
Q17: Was he famous for writing detective fiction?
A17: Yes, quite.
Q18: Is it Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?

A duofold fountain pen
My turn again. And now for something completely different ... Q1: Is it animal, vegetable, or mineral? A1: Vegetable
Q2: Could it be confused by some to be a fruit?
A2: Yes
... if no one takes a turn by tomorrow, I'm going again :)
Go ahead if you want.
Q3: Is it used for sauces?
A3: No
Q4: Is it a squash?
A4: No
Q5: Is it generally sold as a single piece, or in multiple pieces at a time?
That's not a yes/no question. :p
Shoot, sorry... I knew something felt wrong about it :) Q5: Is it generally sold as a single piece?
A5: No
Q6: Is it green?
A6: I can't answer.
Q7: Is the skin striped or banded?
A7: No
Q8: in shape is it more yonic than phallic?
A8: Yes
To review: - A vegetable - It could be confused as a fruit - Not used for sauces - Not a squash - Not generally sold as a single piece - Can't say if it's green or not (maybe it has some green?) - Skin is not striped or banded - Yonic shaped rather than phallic
Q9: Does one normally eat the entire fruit/veggie, skin and all?
I hope a small hint regarding the summary will not spoil the game. When the answer to the first question, "Animal, vegetable, or mineral?" is "vegetable", it doesn't mean the object is *A* vegetable. It refers to the object's general nature.
A9: No
Is the object "A" vegetable?
A10: No
Q11: is it a melon?
A12: No
Is it a fruit?
A13: No
Is it a food for human consumtion?
A14: Yes
Q15: Could a person attempting to use it as a drug potentially overdose as a result?
A15: Yes
Is it coffee?
A16: No
Q17: Is it a mushroom?
(ah, good thinking <waits in anticipation/fingers crossed> !)
A17: No
Q18: Is it a peach?
A18: No
Is it a person in a vegetative state? And yes, I do recall that it can be eaten. LOL
(This one is a freebie. A person in a vegetative state would be an "animal" for Q1, not "vegetable".)
re #174 And nobody would mistake Terry Schiavo for a fruit
I'm feeling very lost on this one, which I attribute to my own personal turmoil, and not the boundaries of the game. So, I made some lists of what we know. Affirmative: - Per Papa's comment, it is "something completely different" - It IS a vegetable only in the general sense of the game - It IS a food for human consumption - The shape IS more yonic than phallic - It COULD be confused by some to be a fruit - A person using it as a drug COULD overdose on it Negative: - It is NOT used for sauces - It is NOT a squash - It is NOT generally sold as a single piece - It is NOT a vegetable - It is NOT a fruit - It is NOT a melon - It is NOT coffee - It is NOT a mushroom - It is NOT a person in a vegetative state - One does NOT normally eat the entire thing, skin and all - The skin is NOT striped or banded Unanswerable - Yes/No is not a sufficient answer for "is it green" We have two more questions left (since walkman's question was deemed a freebie).
Q19: Is it an herb?
Some background music while we are pondering this enigma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-krsAtiRAVM
Ha! Good one!
This response has been erased.
Going over tfurrows summary, I realized a couple of things: 1. We skipped question #12. 2. The answer to question #5, "Is it generally sold as a single piece?" should be "I can't answer" rather than the "No" I gave. I apologize for the confusion. Let's set the question count back by 1 for the miscount and 2 more for the bad answer, which makes the last question ... Q16: Is it an herb? A16: No
Q17: Is it commonly sold in western grocery stores?
(I am interpreting "western" as "American" since I don't have much experience with grocery stores other than in the US and Japan.) A17: Yes
Q18: Is it a root?
A18: No
Is it an egg?
A19: No
One more question!
Q20: is it a flower?
<bites nails> the suspense is killing me here!! :)
A20: No THE ANSWER IS: APPLE PIE! I stumped you!

I guess I could have answered question 9 "Yes". I interpreted the question
to be asking whether or not one normally ate the whole thing in one sitting,
but it is true that you do eat the whole thing, including the skin/crust.
Hope that ambiguity didn't throw you.
That was more difficult than I thought it would be.
Well done papa! See if you can do it again.
Would there be a problem if we started a new conference item for each game round? I think it would make reviewing questions in the crrent round a lot easier.
What if 20Q had it's own conference?
That wold be ideal if we are going to continue the game indefinately.
Mmmm Pie
Is creating a new conference something cross would have to do?
tfurrows, congratulations on response #200! I think it is correct that only cross or another admin can create a new conference. I'm not sure whether he wants to bother with changes to Backtalk. I was thinking of starting the next 20 Questions round as a new item in the Agora conference. Anyone think it would be good to have a copy of the games on Gopher?
I think gopher would be a lot of fun... what about script-based, interactive, so the gopher audience could take part in the fun? Not a copy I guess, but move the thing over to gopher and try it out there?
Giving people an alternative to Backtalk for accessing the game is what gave me the Gopher idea. I was thinking of mirroring the BT posts by hand to my gopherhole and accepting questions on either BT or by e-mail. A Gopher-based app might be an interesting challenge. I wonder if the BT API would allow Gopher to generate BT posts rather than the other way around.
I vote for papa, and tfurrows to be granted some admin privilages for running thier own conferences, and maintaining the gopher server, in line with Grex.org policy.
Sure; that seems reasonable. Conferences can be created for folks, and I certainly don't mind handing over gopher admin rights to some folks.
mijk, I appreciate your confidence :) I think cross has it under control though... I don't know that I could add much. Papa might be a great match for helping with backtalk/bbs though, I think he knows more about it than I do.
I wouldn't mind being fairwitness if cross wants to create a conference for Twenty Questions. I might need some pointers since it seems Backtalk fairwitnesses are a vanishing breed.
I've got to figure out how to create a conference and I'm a bit swamped at the moment, but I'll give it a go. :-)
Thanks. No rush.

Or would it be better used the Iq conference ("The place for puzzles,
riddles, and other trivia")? Since no one has posted there since 2006,
I don't think anyone will be bothered if we create an new item for each
game round (it looks like several games, like the "n-Letter Word Game"
serieses were run that way back in the day).
We used to do multiple items for the letter match game, so I don't think it would be a problem to do a new item for each round of 20 questions. If it should get to be overwhelming we could always create a new IQ conference, but I kind of doubt that will be a problem.
Next round starting in the IQ conference!
Twenty Questions gopher page: gopher://grex.org/1/~papa/20q
There's an `Iq` conference? Seems perfect for this sort of thing!!
Is there a "mediocre nihilist" cf I can join?
resp:217 All of them fit that description. Have a ball!
#217 http://humourhub.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/i-cant-breathe.jpg #218 YES and now it's a brisk walk through a graveyard. Side note: No one ever plants a tree for Fentanyl Floyd. There are no prayer circles or positive community cleanups. It's only looting and arson. One could say that God is a nihilist b/c the Fentanyl Floyd was struck down by lightning. What are the actual statistical probabilities? In a lifetime, there's a 1 in 15,300 chance according to the National Weather Service. BUT another variable is the angle in which the lightning struck.
